Again, the process is driven by the nominations received. There was nothing stopping you from naming any or all of those guys. We would hope you or others put those guys forward in 2012.
why do you need to rely on nominations if it potentially misses the best candidates? You have a panel. Why not just have them do the homework so no one falls through the cracks? Did you send a nomination form to MLS clubs where Wellingtonians have plied their trade?

The HOF is not about the organising committee or the judging panel 'doing their homework' - its about the whole Wellington Football community being a part of a celebration and acknowledgment of outstanding contributions to football.

As I'm sure you can appreciate, if a handful of people make the nominations and judgments then the event is open to criticism on the grounds of bias. The Wellington Football community tells the HOF who they wish to see nominated and then the judging panel make their decision based on a pre-defined criteria. Can't see any fairer way of this working.

No need to speak to any EPL, MLS, or other league around the globe - all the players you speak of started somewhere in Wellington both as junior and senior players. I am surprised that a club which can boast a number of recent and current professional players originating from their junior programmes was unable to make a single nomination.

dunno about the 70's but surely player of the decade for 80s/90s (Wynton) and 00's (Elliott) would be a given?

The Wellington Football Hall of Fame (HOF) was launched tonight at a dinner for 150 guests at Four Kings, with Wynton Rufer and Barrie Truman announced as the first two inductees to the Wellington Football Hall of Fame.

From a list of 29 nominees the HOF judging panel announced eight nomination finalists who have made massive contributions as Wellingtonians to football.  The list of eight finalists follows:

         Vaughan Coveny

         Tom Delahunty

         Malcolm Dunford

         Ivan England

         Maureen Jacobson

         Jim McMullan

         Wynton Rufer

         Barrie Truman

With a number of outstanding contributions being made by players the judging panel decided that for a player to be considered for induction this year they must have retired from playing.

Event Manager Shaun Gill said, The judging panel decided that in order to narrow the field of playing nominees down this year, given the strength of all player nominations, a player must be retired.  It was felt that only in retirement could a players overall contribution to football be truly assessed.

In reaching the decision to induct two nominees this year the judging panel felt both Wynton Rufer and Barrie Truman stood out from the rest of the nominees.  While the other nominees have made massive contributions to the game the achievements of Wynton and Barrie have been immense and stood out over all others.

Wynton Rufers record speaks for itself.  With a Bundesliga Title, UEFA Cup winners medal and recognition as Oceania Player of the Century, Wynton is New Zealands most celebrated Footballer.

Shaun Gill said, What Wynton did in football from humble beginnings at Jims Corner is truly remarkable.  It is for that reason the judging panel had no hesitation in inaugurating Wynton as the first inductee to the Wellington Football Hall of Fame.

Barrie Trumans coaching contribution has spanned five decades in Wellington.  In the 70s he came out to Wellington to take up the role of New Zealand coach and Director of New Zealand Football.  Barrie coached New Zealand 49 times and was instrumental in setting the direction for coaching and football during the 70s.  Barrie also won two national league titles with Wellington United and a Chatham Cup with Miramar Rangers.

Shaun Gill said, Barrie Trumans inauguration as the second inductee reflects a highly successful and lengthy coaching career which has helped develop, the game in New Zealand, and the many players lucky to have been coached by Barrie.

With the quality and quantity of nominations received the Wellington Football Hall of Fame organizing committee is committed to making the HOF dinner an annual event.  To that end, the six nomination finalists who missed out on inductions this year will become automatic nominees for the 2012 event.

HOF Organising Committee chair Mark Chote said, With so many good things happening in football today we felt it was critical that we recognise the amazing contributions made in the past. We hope today that we have started something that develops in coming years and brings together the past, present and future of our football community.

Truman's anecdote about lining up against China in Peking, as it was then, in the 70's was hiliarious. Explaing that the Nzl players couldn't hold the chinese players hands out of the tunnel since that was against 'our religion.'

As was Rufer's taciturn response to being interviewed, including the gem that the highlight of his football career was beating Wgtn Coll with Rongotai. Mal Dunford's comment that Wgtnonians follow football and that club based rivalry is secondary was an inspired commnet which encapsulated the fraternity, and sorority, of the evening- Diamonds, Stop Out, Rangers, Lower Hutt et al all together in good spirits for the good of the game  Salmon072011-04-01 11:28:05

Congratulations to Wynton Rufer and Barrie Truman who are the first inductees to the Wellington Football Hall of Fame.
Massive thanks go out to the 150 people who attended the dinner and made it such a wonderful evening. Particular thanks go to the Wellington clubs and businesses who supported the concept by taking tables.
The staff at Four Kings were awesome and special thanks must go to Matt for assisting in putting on a great night. Thanks also to Brian Mills and Konica Minolta who did all the printing for the event.
Finally, the Wellington Football Hall of Fame is now established and we look forward to an even bigger and better event in 2012 - watch this space for details!!
