Having refereed games this year in the Central League and the Northern Premier I think I'm qualified to give an answer. I would say this:

I think the Northern league is more skillfull, physical and is moderate in pace as the ball is played on the floor more. Alot less long ball stuff.

The Central League has been faster on the majority of games because they pump the ball long quite a bit and is very easy to get caught on the hop and be 40 yards behind because they just pump it long and you tend to do more sprinting to catch up. However there was a game in the weekend on the Central league where I was on the line and to be fair, the game was very very slow

you sure it just wasnt you that was slow on a line HAHA  but also look at the teams you had POO v ok.

i would say (having refereed both - not this year tho) that the NL is a better standard than the CL.

Although would be a good test if Wests/Miramar drew a "top" Akl side in Wgtn in the semi final of the cup.

NPL > CPL

But overall between the two federations it may be different.

Three for me, and two for them.

Last time a team from each played, Wests beat Easts.

Therefore CPL > NPL

I think the top teams in both leagues are evenly matched.  The big big difference is the bottom half of the leagues.  A team like Waitak city who is really strugling in the NL would cruise to miid table finnish in the CL.  Teams like the Naki and  Palmy Marist would not come close to promotion from  Northern league one.

If you wanna pull out the Chatham Cup argument game as a measure of superiority then you create a very large rod for your own back. You could say that cause there were 3 teams from the NPL in the semis NPL > CPL. You could say that even tho the All Blacks have by and large been the most dominate team in world rugby (note: by and large) they are poo compared to Australia, England and France based on the last 2 world cup finals. Every team in Europe is poo compared to Greece as they are the Euro champs. You could argue NPL > CPL as Auckland City and Waitakere United > Team Wellington. It goes on and I think you have to be objective about what you use to support your argument.

I think that Wests, Miramar and Lower Hutt would sit mid table or higher in NPL (over the course of season they would adjust and improve) a couple of others might prop the table up and the rest would most definitely be also rans in the div 1. Lasts nights Metro v Mount Albert Ponsonby game was a humdinger and if that had been a PN Marist or Stop out etc then they would have been blown off the park with pace, skill and also the physicalness of the game and would be whinging cause 'oh sir he tickled me you should card him'.

On the other end of the spectrum, Onehunga Sports have Mark Elrick and Napier City Rovers have Perry Cotton so the lower teams in the respective grades don't do themselves any favours...

Old topic I know... there seems to be a whole lot of talk about Welly Football. So I thought I'd give a first hand rant about Dorkland Football.

I just thought I talk about Amatuer Football, and debt.

As a reserve squad member of the 2004 Bay Olympic side, I have to say that community's/club members, must worry about clubs like Bay Olympic, PAYING average at best 20 somethings to play at this level.

The players dont pay fees, get PAID. Managers get PAID. There is NO prize money...

Most of the first Team, are brought in. Young players are not given the opputunity from within the club to play first team, they run the 1st team as a seperate indentiy. The mums and dads who pay fees for little Jonny to have a kick about on Saturday at Crum Park get screwed over.

Wouldnt it be better to have a great big list on the Rep board of young lads taken on at Junior National Level, or represent a National League side. Than a pointless f**king Cup, you went into debt for with no way of paying it back as you are a NON-PROFIT organistion mainly held up by volunteers...(xcept dipsh*t first team goons who live in noddy land)

If you play at Northern League Level, you should play becuase you enjoy it, not for a substantial amont of money taking into consideration theres no way to get it back.

What a quality post.

It always drove me mad trying to work out how the Auckland sides could justify some of the $$ that were bandied about as first team budgets.

You have summed up a stack of my views on the subject as well.

Oddly enough (and I might have this wrong) it doesn't feel like that so much here.

Which is it a rumor or have things changed?  can't be both.  So they have run out of money same as Bay Olimpic are about to.  I'm sure another club will step up and start paying silly money soon.  Maybe Mirimar maybe Stop Out.

Wairarapa United seem to have some very good players in an average league? Money not an issue there?

Don't mean to be a negative bastatrd here boy's. But I know first hand Bay Olympic are f**ked.

It seems poor management starts at the Grass Roots Level as well, theres no excuse for it.

Are there many Super type club operations in Welly?

I.E.  small clubs cant warrant paying first team players, so the merge to create more cash flow from the Juniours and come up with some bull sh*t, like it "It will make us a stronger club"

When they should be saying, "it will make our first team good for 2 or 3  years"

But then eventaully they will lose money as they cant sustain the amount of wages going out.

Rant, over.
