I see in yesterdays Dom sports supplement a question about what sport the O'Brien Shield is competed for. I didn't think that shield had been played for for years. Bit of a shame really seeing as how it's Seatouns 100 year anniversary.

I think Wests had it in 2002? That was the year we (back when I played for Wests) won the league, beat HavelocPlayoff iniffs and went to National League Playoffs in Auckland - big monstrosity of a thing. I could be wrong but wasn't it challenged for along the lines of how the Ranfurly Shield was challenged for?

That's right, the holder has to lose at home for it to go elsewhere, and is competed for by Wellington teams only. Last I heard Wests did have it but where it is now who knows. In someone's basement somewhere most likely as I haven't heard of it being played for in the last 3 years.

I'm pretty sure it is hanging up in the Ole Academy. It would be challenged for in the Central league because if you have alook at it it's gone to teams like Gisborne, Manawatu and NCR in the past. Perhaps somebody at Wests should dust it off for next year.

"Not so Big Cup"
Not quite the Ranfurly Shield, but nonetheless it is still part of Wellington's football history. Even though nobody knows about it.
