Cap Footy have made the effort to resurrect the Shield (its been dusted off and engraved) and there was a story in today's Dom - here if you didnt see it ...
The Cap footy Central League draw now highlights the Shield games on the website ...
As Fred W notes in his story, the first challenge this year will be by Petone on 5 April. If Olympic hold onto it, there should be a barnstorming challenge next up, with the Mar set for the next crack. And the challenge after that will be number 200.

good article. Wainui holding it for a long time in the mid 90's is no surprise as it was a horrible place to go and play (and I mean that in a nice way).
All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Not surprised at all about this Frankie, They had a very ggod team back then, players like Cutter, Clayton, Weijers, Big Sammy, Manzone, and who could forget their keeper Finlay (Mark) just to mention a few. They were coached by their current coach Andy McKay.
I pick Petone for an upset for the first up challenge!

Well yia it will great to have it back...BUT until such time as we have it in our hands first ...... there will be no challenge ...no matter what everyone says...There is no point in "putting the Shield up if "there is NO Sheild"...O'Brien shield is cool. I'm glad it's back.

Hmmm but you did win it without the previous club not having it in their hands either

Had this missing trophy problem before. Hilton Cup stolen from Stopout's clubrooms in 1978. Turned up in a brown paper bag on Russell Gray's desk at the Dom 1987 in time for the tournament that year. Petone may need to wait 9 years to have their challenge for the O'Brien Shield.

If we are going to "give the appropriate emphasis" on the Shield, we need to get the silverware first, I think it is fair....and just because we won it without the actuall shield ...that doesn't mean that it has to keep going as it is....hope it makes sense...Lets start something properly ....and if other clubs that won it ....did the same last year then the Shield issue would have been sorted by now...

true that wainui were a stronghold 94-96, very tough side who i think had 13 undefeated o'brien challenges in the top league, richard prouse was a fortress for them.. they had an import called david wolfe from the states who was probably the best defender in the league, also mark foster too was a handy player with the cutters, weijers, clayton and keeper mark finlay.
i think you will find scott mcleod was the coach if my memory serves me correct stop press.

7-2 full time.
if the first half was champagne then the second half was rheineck.
funny to see a team 6-0 up compltely break down and go spare at each other.
Petone's second goal was classy but Olympic had enough chances in both halves to comptely bury them, which in effect they did.
Great to see Olympic parading their silverware for all to see.

Didn't score in the first 9 mins though, did they?
Or did I still have my eyes closed from the first game?

Ah. Good point.
I recall looking at my watch when goal 6 went in and seeing 18, but had not subtracted those blissful goal-free 9 minutes at the start.

8 minutes to find it, 30 seconds to do it and 30 seconds to clean up?
