Hi I'm interested to hear how your clubs reserve teams run.

How many changes do you have week to week?
Do you train together with firsts?
Do you know who is playing before the Saturday?
How many players generally switch between 1st and reserve teams?
Do the players coming down train with you on Thursday?

Also a further question. Do you think it's beneficial to have reserve teams play in the same league system as your clubs 1st team, and if so why do you think it's beneficial?

Three for me, and two for them.

Personally I think reserve leagues are a waste of time for a whole host of reasons, many of which caused the demise of Capital Reserve.

1) usually we have 2-3 changes each week, depending mainly on injury and unavailability, and occasionally on the first team's coach calling up a player of two.

2) Yes, both teams have always trained together (since I've been there at least). that's why we call it the Senior Squad.
3) We usually decide the 1st's and 2nd's formations on thursday so everyone knows where they're playing.
4)As said before, usually not more than 2-3 at the most. We definitely don't stack our team, for a single reason: we can't!
5) Yep, we all train together.
6) [from the second post]. Is it beneficial? Well my gut instinct tells me NO. However, this is only our second season with our first two teams in the same league and so far it's worked quite well. Especially with the second team doing better than the firsts, this gives everyone something to play for. The firsts don't want to lose their spot, and conversely the second's play as hard as they can to push for a spot.
Ideally, though, we'd like our first team to be at least one division above the seconds.

I was unaware there was a "demise" of Cap reserve? The reshuffle stemmed from the restructuring of the National League to the NZFC. And with that came the inevitable reshuffle of Capital Football and its Prem/Reserve competitions.

I liked playing in Cap reserve.

Can you state your reasons as to why you think reserve leagues are a waste of time?

the gulf between the top and bottom teams were often huge - mainly due to difference in depths between clubs.  Plus there was no promotion/relegation.  The main benefit was that your 1st team played after the 2nd team, so it kinda ensured that 1st team fringe players would get some game time for the 2nds.

Good comment. Also now that i think about it, the concept of 'Reserve team' was lost on a lot of clubs. (example: playing against players in their mid/late 30's who had effectively retired from top flight football and knew they were never playing Prem again, and there were a lot of them).

This is quite timely because I believe there are moves afoot to reinstate an official "reserve league" - and it seems that not a lot of people remember why it was got rid of the last time.

Essentially the argument from the better teams in the Reserve league were that they would get stronger opposition playing outside the reserve league and would prefer to do that.

While teams in the next league down also contended that it was ridiculous that they couldn't get "promoted" even though they were manifestly much better than some of the teams in the reserve league "above" them.

At the end of the day the restructure above provided the catalyst to do away with the ressies league.

Personally I'm a fan of the status quo.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

off the top of my head

1)The lack of promotion/relegation
2)Just because a club has a very good first team does not mean that they have a good second team - leads to a bigger gulf in standard than necessary. Better to have them play in the 'pyramid' where they find their competitive level.
3)The issues around placing a reserve side back into the pyramid if the top team is relegated - some teams would rightly belong in capital 1, others may not be good enough for capital 2.
4)Whatever Smithy said.

So then, are reserve teams in Capital or Central football seen as development teams or are they purely results based and select players based on ability rather than development/potential ability?

It depends very much on the club.

Some clubs (Wests for example) have a very young second team that they use to develop players.  Other clubs, usually smaller ones, take whoever they can get to make up their 2nd team.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I thought that reserve teams were placed back into the league they were taken from if their Prem squad was relegated?

ie. A Cap1 team won promotion to Cap Prem, their 2nd team in Cap 3 became Cap Reserve. The Cap Prem squad gets relegated 2 seasons later back down to Cap1, their reserve side goes back to Cap 3 where they came from.

may be an option if we didnt have CL - but seems to work ok at the mo. There was very little incentive for Reserve teams in the old system. I cant see CF looking to change it

I can only speak for my club's women's teams...

How many changes do you have week to week?

Very few. This week was an exception - our first team had a bye and three of us (inc. me) played for the reserves.

Do you train together with firsts?

Yes.

Do you know who is playing before the Saturday?

Sunday in our case, but yes. I got the call to play for the reserves on Friday this week.

How many players generally switch between 1st and reserve teams?

This is the first time any of us have done so.

Do the players coming down train with you on Thursday?

This time, the call to play with the reserves came after our training, so no. (I'm the keeper so I generally train seperately anyway.)

This isnt what the Capital Reserve concept was about though, it wasnt about being a superior league to Cap 1. The incentive was pushing for a first team spot.
