To be fair SJay this morning's game wasn't really football so much as a massacre.  14-0.  Joke league.

Yeah but still a lot of running going forward haha one of the centre backs went for a full field run! But yeah 14-0 and 3-0 at halftime. Very deffinately need to strengthen the school league! maybe in the future mix it with some of the lower div men's teams?

Ben Wierenga's full field mazy was a sight to behold.

Unfortunately the rest of the game was pants.

School league needs to be amalgamated with club league so all the best players under 19 are playing each other week in week out.

Current situation is a shambles.

true, first half was very slack, much like my shooting today, couldn't buy a goal!

u19? or players still at school?

If schools are able to connect themselves with clubs then club players would be able to play for schools  and vice versa, but it gets to a point when there is too much football for the younger players.  We had 6 trainings week just been and then 2 games and for some another training tomorow.

Under 19.  Who cares if a kid is at school or not?

The key should be to have all the best players playing each other.  Watching the College Premier Youth grade you can actually see good players getting worse each game as they get away with making silly decisions against much weaker opposition.

The situation works for nobody.

If you're a good player at a poor footballing school: f**ked.  Because you train with numpties and get smashed each week.  Example: a couple of good players at Rongotai.

Good player at a good footballing school: f**ked.  Because you play against piss poor opponents each week which provides you with no challenge.  Example: three or four of the Wellington Coll 1st XI, same for St Pats Town and Stream.

Premier Youth Grade is the single biggest f**k up in football in Wellington.  End of.

I may be completely wrong, but did Coll first XI use to play in the men's grade, possibly as Miramar's 2nd XI? I think I remember playing against them and seemed a fairly successful situation.

I realise that it can be hard for schools to stay consistently strong with the oldest players leaving every year, but for the stronger schools like Coll what are the big problems?

I guess it could weaken the school competition, but if it helped our best school players then surely it would be a good thing?

Possibly not the best situation, but better than the current one?

Well I saw Tawa upset St. Patricks College 3-1 so I think the league is still competitive, actually it was the best game of local football I've seen this season. The kids, for the most part, like to play and avoid the bullsh*t.

Surely that defeats the purpose of having school footy then Smithy? a 18yr old should be playing mens teams or reserve grade, keep school aged players within school teams if they are associated with clubs. I think if you make it u19's then you in a way defeat the purpose of upper hutt u19 tournament n the nationals too. It's like Rep teams, clubs bring together a group of quality u19 players to represent the club at nationals.

Good footballers at good schools= close games but yes a times push overs, i think that the experience we gained today playing uhutt we are a much better team.

To be fair most of the wc 1st's are quality players :P

Yes wulfsteam we did used to play in mens comp but got dropped down again because of inconsistency and senior players leaving etc.

This and the next two years will be strong WC teams but last year there were a few quality players but not a good enough team to play mens. This year with the u15's from last year after two games our goals for and against is 22-0. Admitadly the teams we played aren't strong football schools.

I think that you do find that 1 team dominates each year with others fighting it out below the clear winner- ie. St pats and Tawa. On paper Pat's should have won if you take into account the form they had from last week.

Hard to say if teams would be able to consistently perform in mens leagues-same thing is happening with WC 1st XI cricket being promoted to the equivalent of Men's div1, but the second tier.

If the develompent of players is nurtured like in auckland, MAG's First XI train 4 mornings a week 630-8 then results should follow. Jamie Milne has worked wonders with the WC players in just 2 years of a before school academy 1 day a week for each age group. Guy____ (Smith?)has taken over now and is continuing the academy.

Yes Smithy you do get away with a lot sometimes, Lou Williams Gray is a good example of that, but most good players also know when they've got away with it and improve themselves and don't do it again.

So much for my quick reply

I can't comment because I'm too lazy/busy to go to acadmey this year. But from his credentials (probably splet wrong) he seems alright. IF teams took the Schools football more seriously then it would be a much better competition.

I think Charlie Howe's influence on the WC team has been tremendous, he brought in Andy Smith and a fresh approach. It has worked wonders for us, bar yesterday's loss to Marist.
His professionalism but still fun approach makes the players want to be coached by him and also the connections that have been built with Ricky Herbert and the Phoenix (mainly through Kale) have also strengthend not only top level football at the school but also the younger kids.

SJay I disagree with you completely about the value of a 14-0 drubbing of a lesser team but to be fair it's nice to have a kid on here who can think and spell coherently.

Doesn't happen often.

There must be some value that a player/team can take out of a win like that. ie. how they scored the goals, which formations worked well, all the technical stuff. Also I think that in a game like that it allows the coach to experiment with different players. For me, today our corners were shocking, delivery was a pass mark but we couldn't get on the end of anything. Standing on the keeper everything seemed to go maybe 10cm over my head each and every time. But it gives us something to work with.

Also I think that the scoreline might not have been so blown out if we hadn't lost yesterday, most of the players were frustrated and decided that unfortunately for UHutt they got to be on the receiving end.

Cheers btw :p

Hard news- what's the Sunday league reference relate to?

School football after school wednesday then clubs on the weekend. More football, all of the good players will play for their schools but also be playing for clubs. Would need some floodlit grounds but surely that wouldn't be too tough...

^^
That is a good idea in theory...But school players do not have enough time in their lives to train 3x a week for school, 2 or 3 for club play two games of footy and for some school teams be expected to maintain high grades at school. Not to  mention the most important for some, maintaining a social life.

I can honestly say that presently I would not be able to manage playing school and club at the same time, not because of my interest or intent but just because I don't have enough time in my life. I know players who are in similar positions. For Lou W-G it is even harder because he lives out in Pram, travels to Col each day and still keeps his life together. These plans all sound good in theory but when you take into account the other factors, they are not viable.

Back in my day we would play school football at 11 am then shoot off to play for club reserve teams in the afternoon. You can pull that off at 16 and 17. The quality of school football didnt matter so much to the better players that had futures as they would get a decent run with their clubs. The same would be for trainings, school trainings right after school then club trainings at 630ish. Seemed to work then. Is it so different now?

Certain colleges - your alma mater amongst them - discourage such behaviour now and tell kids that schools football is where they need to be.

There is also the issue of getting time at a decent level at a decent senior club.  I give you Ben Fredrickson as an example.  Far too good for 1st XI football, could be playing reserves regularly at the Mar, but doesn't...for a variety of reasons.

Thommos mates have to play Smithy, you should always look after your mates.

That is sh*t by the way. As long as players agree to play for the schools they should be encouraged to get better at their clubs. Coz thats all that will happen, they will become better players. Little Freddy is a perfect example of that too, hes only that good from the time he has spent with Miramar. Not SPC. Yet SPC think he should only play for them. Thats miles off.

Exactly.

Although him playing only occasionally for the Mar does give Park Life a few headline opportunities:

1. Fast Freddy's Dropped
2. Red Fred's Not Ginger

etc etc etc.

A field day no less.

Anyway enough of us agreeing with each other or I'll have to re-title the thread.

St Pats Town is gay, boo, hisssss, bahhhhh.

Yes Pats did win last year. First game of the season and our "senior" centre back got sent off...what a muppet!!! We lost 4-2 then bounced back to next week beat Stream 6-2 they didn't know what had hit them.

This year I think it'll be very different, Col at home, coming off a 14-0 thrashing of UHutt, Pats lost 3-1 to Tawa, predictions on the score? Trompy to bag atleast a double and keep up his record?

A-team should come along, maybe even voyage out to Stream for the WC v Stream traditional the wednesday after Queens Birthday weekend. Should be good!

Righteo! I think I will go, I missed it last year. Sounds like it could be a bit like my debut game for SPC in the Coll traditional when we were humped 10-0. Leo was in their team then, but he didnt even play in that game.
