This was in yesterday's press and online:

What are everyone's thoughts?  I'm keen to see it happen, however it has been tried before.

I thought it was a bit rich of Mainland telling South that they need to change their structure to fit theirs, considering we Canty seems to change all the time (10 down to 8, then two rounds, now three rounds)  However you Southerners will have more knowledge on whether an 8 team league is a good idea.

Being looked at for 2012 but depends on Soccersouth wanting to drop a couple of teams at the end of next season. It's in their hands now.
Terry Phelan was at a meeting of MPL clubs, he seemed keen for it to go ahead.
If it doesn't happen in 2012 it will never get off the ground.
Next years MPL will stay at 21 games.

Dropping a couple of teams from the premier league down here is pretty much an inevitability anyway. There simply isn't enough football talent to sustain a competitive 10-team competition.

Why is its Footballsouths responsibilty? Why do we have to change and not Mainland?

Do the sums on the number of games played with a ten team league, = eighteen games. That is why Soccersouth would need to drop two teams as not enough weekends to play a round robin South Island league otherwise.
MPL and SSL would be eight teams over two rounds giving fourteen games.
Split the MPL and SS into two pools of eight teams, top and bottom half of each comp are separate pools and play each other over one round.

Apparently Mainland Football have approached Football South about the South Island League as recently as last , the reply from Football South CEO Bill Chisholm was an emphatic " No " we are not interested , I would sugest that this this is a very narrow approach to a big issue.

I know from speaking to several of the clubs down in dunedin that Football South's reply was not what the clubs want , Clubs in dunedin are all for a S I League these will include Cavy . Tech Mosgiel , Roslyn and probably a few others.

Its a no brainer - For Football to move forward in the South Island we must have some sort of South Island League , Fact !!
