Like others on this topic my memory of SO is the National league days, 70's very memorable. As well as Jim there are a few other names i recall, Peter ,jim and Dick  Dunn, Charlie Duncan, Arie Molenaar, Wilf Prince these are only a few that I recall and will probably remember more soon as I post this.

Stop Out you keep your name I cant go along with the guy who said you dont deserve it.
[/QUOTE]

Arie Molenaar (life Member) is still around. He's always asking me how the boys at Stop Out are doing. He's been spotted at a few Phoenix games of late.

btw, Wellington Diamond United, 1980(81?). Stop Out won the game. It was so cold that day that Tommy Hepinstall wore green mittens for the whole game. Mind you, could be complete bollocks of course....

Thought that was the one! Barry's save was from Billy Harris. And yes, it really was a dreadful day.

As for the other stuff... oh please LIGHTEN UP!

Stop Out were the first club I ever played for. They were local and they were good. That was back in 1970...  don't seem like yesterday but does seem like the day before yesterday.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

new faces to try to move his team away from the foot of the table. The
latest arrivals are 21 year old striker Ben Kistell who has been playing in
the Northern Counties East League for Staveley Miners Welfare after a spell
in New Zealand. .

I am back in NZ.  Just had a couple of weeks  in Algeria visiting friends. Got introduced to Algeria by an anthropologist name of Jeremy Keenan in 2001. Through him met people down there, in Tamanrasset, who have stayed friends. This, last month, was my fourth visit to that part of the Sahara.

The 2 hardest guys that I can remember at Wellington City were Brian Parks and Tom McKechnie.
Parksy just about chopped Jimmy McGurk in half an a Hilton game at Memorial Park in a 50/50 that bounced about chest height and Jimmy was a wee fella. That one warmed up the crowd  like all Wharfies/Wellington City matches did.

I remember a big striker played for Wgtn City but his name escapes me, I know he did a bit of time in prison, played for WC in the 70's, that guy was hard.

Im not trying to be a train spotter but Wellington City were in existence from 1971( Nat League) till 1986 when they amalgamated to become WDU. They won Hilton Cup around 1973 and were in a Chatham Cup final.

Pleased thats sorted , still dont know who that player is though saw him play in a Hilton Cup final at bell Park against petone, Glen Winter and Wayne Smith had a running battle all day with him. I think Smith was only 15 or 16 at the time Glen was a year older.

He must have been back in Prison when I joined though some of the squad I played in could have easily fitted in Jail.

For some reason the name Henry Greasly just jumped into my head, but I could be miles off the mark. doesnt really matter its just i remember him and that game Hilton cup game sticks in my memory for some reason. would have been early 70's. He tried to intimidate the young Petone guys but they gave him as good as he got. someone out there may know who im talking about.

That Bob Craig fella I remember him but im not sure if he is the guy im thinking of. the guy was big scruffy hair and played striker,  circa 73, doesnt really matter but now its really bugging me.

When Bob arrived about 72 he was clean shaven and looking lean. By the time he did the prison thing he was bearded and scruffy.

Been bloody frustrating not being able to get into this site for a couple of weeks. I could have saved you guys about three pages of discussion. Anyway after getting rid of some damaged macros, I want to add to the Hungaria amalgamtion.

Hungaria amalgamated with Miramar Rangers to form Wellington City to save the National League position, and provide some back up for the aging Hungarian wizards.  Miramar remained as a Central league Club and eventually became a National League club in their own right.
Wellington City, minus Miramar, then amalgamated with WDU (Diamonds).

Bobby Craig was playing for City but there may have been some confusion regarding the long "scruffy" hairstyle with  Henry Greasley, who came into the picture from Miramar, with quite a mop.

Hope this helps you get some sleep

Thanks guys for clearing that up, A trip down memory lane doesn't hurt the soul, certainly think they were good times watching those players you mentioned. Hope the Stop out guy got his photos.

Any other memory trips around that era count me in.
For the record my favourites circa 70's were Alan Jefferies, Geoff Brand, Glenn and Tom Winter, Keith Barton,  Steve Boyland plus the time when Petone seemed to have a lot of young guys and some real old ones  Bob Whaley and Jack Shaw  oh and Martin Ryan was a very good player, I could go on but wont bore you.

You wont bore me, villageboy! Most of those guys were just a bit before my time but I can tell you that Keith Barton was my idol as young player. You could learn a lot about the art of defending just by watching him in action. He and Bobby Almond were the two best defenders in NZ back then in my completely biased opinion.

As for Steve Boyland I would've gone out in any weather to see him play. For a few years Stop Out had both him and Bruce Polyansky terrorising defences. What a sight seeing Polyansky set sail down the wing and doing that sort of Campese-style goosestep to beat his man!

Unfortunately I have very few photos of Stop Out. I did take a lot of the short-lived Hutt Valley United, a real who's who of Hutt talent in the late 80s. Buggered if I know where I put those photos.

Can you tell me what happened to Keith, I think I know but dont know how to put it here if im wrong, if you know what I mean.

But to me those were the days, Maurice Tillotson and all, sunny Sundays at TeWhiti, I was even there when Duggy gave Perkins the kiss.

Keith died a few years back of cancer. When I say a few years it must be over ten now.... 1995 I think.
Stop Out put on an evening for him. Friends and family all gathered to say goodbye. Then he went to Australia and spent his last few weeks with family there.

I was about to say he went to Upper Hutt but I was thinking of another little fellow called Arthur Inglis.
Did Alec Milne finish up playing a couple of seasons for the greeks at the end.
You must remember villageboy, I come from the other side of the river!!
Could tell you a bit about Hungaria though. Now there was a footbal team. The Nix of the early 70's.

When I look at the comments being made on this site, I get the feeling that I must know you, Dairyflat, Stopout and Toffeeman

Wee history of Lotsy. Came to NZ from Sydney Olympic in 1966 -67 to play for Petone. Match fee NZ 6 pounds. The following year other Hungarians arrived from overseas and the team was formed. Am pretty sure he is up in New Plymouth as he played for Motorua between Petone and Hungaria. Imre Kiss is also up there as was Julius Beck who later came to Wellington to run Wilton House after the Van der Breggans (Paul WDU) sold up. Now lives in Paraparaumu. Joe Gaal , Joe Benzic and Nick Gatony are in CHCH, and of course, Wellington were left with our old friend Atilla. The rest of that original group were Paul Watkins, Fred Zedlack, Frank and Peter Furjes, Stephan Nemit, Kovacs, Andy Polyansky, Bruces dad, and a couple of non Hungarians, Brian Willman and John McDowell. (Apologies for some of the spelling).I understand they had a reunion recently.

Those Sunday matches at Te Whiti were great and in front of some good crowds. Some of those games were. WAIT FOR IT, the televsion.

My favourite game from that National League 70s must have been Stop Out 2 North Shore 2. Weather was incredibly bad mid-way through. POURED!!!   SO were 2-0 down and came back to 2-2 before missing TWO pens in the last couple of minutes.

Earlier Geoff Brand was mentioned. Anyone remember his goal against Eastern Suburbs in , cough cough..., 1972?

Alex Milne did go to Upper Hutt as the coach in 1974 from there I'm pretty sure he went up to Auckland and coached Eden so you were right uiron. Perhaps our Auckland friends can add some detail.

Arthur Inglis was at Upper Hutt at the same time he was a fantastic player, probably the best I played with. He also played for NZ with his mate Jimmy Warrender who captained NZ. Arthur has moved to Brisbane but comes back sometimes to see one of his daughters.
