$2.5mill seems hefty, hasn't cost WCC that much?

If you could get both the football and rugby communities at Well Coll behind it finding the money wouldn't be to much of an issue I dont think.

Don't forget WCC had the luxury of building this one on an already flat carpark.

At WC you'd have to do significant drainage and earth work, install floodlights, build a new changing room building, and improve vehicle access.

So, in summary, not much change out of $2.5m - and that is at 2008 prices.  Probably more now.

Not really something the school could put at the top of its priority list considering it's non-core infrastructure.

I wouldnt think so - the school and tim brown don't have this kind of money.
And i doubt very much it would be in the intrest of the Board of Trustees to invest in a turf -
FFS those terraces and and school hall are well ahead in priorites.

stop spreading this sh*t.

Earth work?? If it were to happen it would be done to replace the second or third fields. Which are as flat as a carpark. With changing rooms. There are floodlights there, don't know if they work or not. And there is (limited) vehicle access.

bear in mind how long the college rugby club has been fundraising for a rugby pavilion... i havn't been up to the college lately to see if they finally have one but i recall them starting to fundraise when our family entered the school - and they hadn't even got half of that when we had eventually all left some 13 years later...

Tim Brown's thing with Coll is that he wants to build a new indoor sports centre where the old boys gym is currently. He held a meeting last term with students etc, it's pretty much his baby. Not really sure where the turf fits in with this but it would be awesome.

However very unlikely for the reasons Smithy said- the hall is definitely the number one priority so this is nowhere in the near future.

Yes I agree, it is unlikely and I have doubted those who have told the rumours. But as you say dreams are free and I will continue to hope that this will happen.

Oh dear.

The pitch they were looking at was the number two football pitch behind the main gymnasium.

It has no changing rooms or lights.  It has what is effectively a one-way access road and no parking.

It is also predominantly clay, so would need to be dug down into to a depth of a few feet and then have a decent draining base shipped in and installed.

It also needs widening and fencing, and the cricket nets would have to be relocated.

All of that equals significant earthworks.

But hey, I could be wrong and your tuckshop whispers could be right.  I'm just telling you the facts as I see them.

Old Boys gym being taken over by rugby.  I'm a member of Collegians Squash Club and we're getting kicked out at end of year so that they can turn the squash end of the building into a rugby Academy.

Typical. Well maybe Timmy's dreams have been squashed. I think all we can agree on is that a turf is extremely unlikely.

I am most likely wrong. I was just putting it out there. See what people think. Always thought it was highly unlikely anyhow. This idea of a new sports centre is of news to me, as is the rugby academy.

To be fair Hamps you did say that at the very beginning - that it was just what you'd heard.

I'd love it to be true.  Would be great for the football academy they've got there...oh...wait...

Just been at the Tawa College v Wellington College at the turf tonight.I hadn's seen the ground yet and its amazing.Had a few shots at the end of the games and the surface is so true.If just a few people had a spare million in there pockets and start getting a few of these surfaces around the Wellington area.It would definately help in developing NZ football as you can play a far better passing game on it.

i agree to a certain extent as having played on it myself it did enhance every ones passing and made us look good! But to be honest nothing beats playing on a good grass field (although they do seem to be lacking!)

i talked to the guys who laid it and they said the rubber compacts slighlty over time which will decrease the 'poppy' kind of bounce. they also said that that means it needs to be decompacted every once and so often (there are machines for this) so hopefully the coucil have budgeted for that. the compaction also effects the drainage, just like a normal pitch. so far so good though, i've been lucky enough to play on it three times and have loved it.

Last season Capital Football sent a poor unfortunate lad out to collect a gold coin contribution from all of the players' parents at Nairnville (something about Football's contribution to the ground maintainance)

Karori just paid a flat fee for its teams so it spared the lad the embarrassment of hitting up old farts and MILFS for loose change.

Same thing at Te Whaea?

How about this:
University boasts 'green' ground

Canberra, June 17; Australian Associated Press

ANU replaces grass with synthetic turf: saves watering, collects rain

Canberra's Australian National University (ANU) says it has broken new ground on energy efficiency with a new state-of-the-art sports field.

Willows Oval now boasts the latest "green" synthetic turf technology and can even harvest up to 500 kilolitres of rainwater for use around the campus.

It's another way the university is trying to up its green credentials.

ANU vice-chancellor Ian Chubb said replacing the grass surface will save at least 15 megalitres in watering a year, while he also expects the rain harvesting to reap about 40 megalitres annually.

Federal Water Minister Penny Wong was at the university on Thursday to officially open the new ground, which was financed through the federal government's Green Precincts fund.

She commended the university for its green campaign, which Professor Chubb said hoped sparked similar efforts from other big organisations.

"It represents an example I hope to the rest of the community that if you want to do things you can," he said.

As an added bonus, the new ground is even FIFA approved.

"You could play the World Cup on this surface."

Prof Chubb said the $A1 million in government funding will also be used to install solar panels, boost carbon neutral transportation around the university and set new water saving goals.

With Wellington's rain and Te Whaea's spot it could break the Australian drought if the water could be shipped across the Tasman.

It's ironic that they have artificial turf because they don't have enough water while we have turf because there's too much water.

Are there any restrictions to the type of boots you can wear on the turf?
e.g. are soft ground boots allowed (plastic sprig with metal tip).

Not to my knowledge, I was told to wear anything, so I wore sprigs and it was just like grass... the sprig gripped in well, so well I even lost one lol. I might add it felt like Endeavour Park before the rainy season, just right.

I'm playing at Te Whaea for the first time on Saturday in the Cap.9 cup final, I only have soft ground boots (with the plastic sprigs/metal tip) so am hoping I don't turn up and get told I can't play in them!
