Team Fever Culture Kicks

Alrighty Folks... for those unaware Sunday is all about Culture Kicks and somehow I am in charge of Team Fever.

We've got a good looking squad (and CNUT) but half our squad have to bail out at lunchtime because of pre-season games.

If you are down at Martin Luckie in the afternoon (after twelve) take your boots.  No guarantees you will get a game, but your chances are increased if you have boots.

Stefan need not apply (jokes).

Tempting to come out of retirement yet again but I'm so unfit I'd need to be substituted after getting out of my car!!
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Ruf, The Ruf, The Ruf is on Fire!!

also, some of the women's teams are a bit short so if any feverettes out there fancy a kick bring your boots down and you will get a run

Yeah.  Big Thanks to all those who filled in after our original squad bailed out en masse.  Yes, even you Stefan (and Oska).

Better run than last year I thought and a much better pitch layout.

Oska was our best player - ran the show against the Yaapies, scored two, and the first one was a great individual effort.
Yaapies got a bit rough with him in the second half, but they were a beaten side by then.
2B was great in goal, the rest of us were varying degrees of rubbish. But good to get a win in the last game, cheers to everyone who helped out in the last game (Bevan/Ian/Rob/Jimmy).el grapadura2009-03-29 21:25:01

Saw that Polish team play 'Germany' - they were class. Not surprised they won it all at all.

final was 0-0 but Poland could have buried them- they started arguing with each other -they take it very seriously but are nice blokes

they definitely deserve to win, even on pens.

our precious trophy is besmirched with Sthrn lips drinking greasy vodka at this very moment, no doubt

Oh god, the Poles are up here now jeez.

And yes they do like to argue, and threaten, and go nuts... takes ravings of previous years away with him...

Ye thought the polish were class, the guy with gold copas was prob there best.
We lost on penos in quarters which was pretty sht. Thought we had a decent chance at winning it but ahwell.
Apparently they didnt win the Auckland one so came down for this one?? And theyr from Christchurch?
Ahwel was good fun.

Thanks Pavlos

yes, Poland were from Chch - I invited them after the National Tournament (which they lost to Somalia). A few people have queried this, and so ill clear it up- Culture Kicks is an open tournament, it welcomes all cultures inculding, heaven forbid, South Islanders. If we were absolutley strict about regional representation then we would stop teams from outside WCC boundaries competing- bye bye Myanmar (Porirua) , bye bye Cambodia (Upper Hutt)- but we are not

i say well done Poland for showiong the enterprise in coming up to snatch the trophy- nothing is stopping us doing the same down in the mainland-

I do have a bit of a dilemna when it comes to the National Tournie though-should I let Poland represent Wgtn, or runners up West Africa?

Got a few months to ponder this

Personally I believe its a Welly tourny and teams from Porirua, Upper Hutt or even Kapiti etc.. should obviously be able to play, I dont think in the future we should get teams from other areas.
Thats my opinion. Keep it Wellington sinces its a welly tourny.
At least they were all polish thought compared to some teams that just had various nationalities.
Poland represents Welly

thanks for feedback- its appreciated- see you next year- and yes, you are right- they were actually Polish, and were supported by local polish society

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Aye but did Poland play up here, because they lost the tourny down in Chch in February?

Cause if they won that too, then surely they can't represent Welly
Permalink Permalink
almost 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
not sure- but a Hamilton team won Auckland tournie last year (fiji) and a team of Wgtn somalis won Upper Hutt tournie- so the moment we start splitting hairs about where teams come from it gets messy- bottom line for me is 43 teams enjoyed a great day- the best team won and ethnic footie got some great publicity-

Culture Kicks will continue to welcome all teams as long as they respect the vibe/kaupapa of the tournament-which is inclusion- Poland respected this
