Toa FC - Porirua
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Any historians out there?

There was at one time a Porirua club by the name of Toa FC.

Anyone know anything about the  club?

I know there was a Toa Softball club at some stage.... Ive heard nothing of Toa FC though. There was Hospital, Porirua Viard, Mana, and now Wests, Porirua City/Leste and Pukerua Bay JFC... i dont even recall the mention of Toa in the Wests biography that they published, which was essientially 100years of Porirua football.

When I was growing up (60s/70s) there was Western Suburbs, Porirua City and Porirua Utd.
Do you know what years the Toa club could have been from and I could maybe ask my old coach if he's heard of them?

A dog with a bone :)

The succession was Hospital, changed to Western Suburbs, to Porirua United (all the same club), then merged with Viard (Viard College old boys) to form Porirua Viard United,  then changed back to Wests.  Porirua City is a separate club and fostered an adjunct at Plimmerton called Mana for a time.
Toa is a softball club (Ngati Toa) toa-softball-club.tripod.com/ .  Perhaps they had a social Sunday team or something.

There's a Toa rugby team that plays in the  Horowhenua comp, but are based in Porirua.

That is a common mistake Mr Blobby. During the late 60's early 70's there were both a Western Suburbs club and a Porirua Utd club (they joined up at a later date). I played for Wests during that time and we had many a local derby with Porirua Utd. nightz2010-09-21 20:22:35

Thanks all.

Bit of a mystery. Toa was mentioned in a football reference in a football paper I found on the web.

Following on from that I now have - A mention of  "Toa club" is in a manuscript copy of "The History of Assocation Football in Wellington 1889-1923'. put together in about 1920. A copy of which is in the McNab Collection of the Dunedin Public Library. Any Dunedin dwellers here?

I might ask them if there's any link. Ta.

Sorry, its not a mistake - common or otherwise.  I was on the committee of both Wests and then Porirua Utd at the time.  You must have had many a local derby with Porirua City.

OK, there appears to have been a Toa United in operation about 1909! Just before my playing days.

I did a wee search on The "Papers past" website and came up with a couple of references (link here).

It's a great site for wasting a day or two!

Someone else may want to spent more time on it (main site link).

Edit: Some great team names in that first link. Can't wait for the Letter Carriers v Mental Hospital fixture!

Edit2: You can get a whole bunch of hits by using Toa and Association Football in the search stream and restricting it to the Evening Post. Enjoy!
