Not sure if this is kosher for YF but last season I really enjoyed reading Tom's Tales on the Capital Football site.

It's Tom Randle's weekly musings on coaching junior football - some good ideas and rather amusing.

Here is the last one - have missed a few as I don't visit the site in between seasons.

Does his description of a goalie fit with Doloras, Buffon II, 2nd Best or others?

Don't get this whole 'keepers are mental' line.  Seems to be a token line that every chuck in when writing about keepers.

"Who but a "Madman" ( both sexes included ) would hurl themselves head first into a torrent of flaying boots and studs to save a goal?"  Not sure about others but I tend to do arms first, not head first.
And why does he write in bullet point form?

His earlier musings were a bit more coherent!

I think it is a back-handed complement to those who play GK.  I've always thought it was the hardest position to play in re emotional fortitude and concentration, and you do have to be brave (= mad/mental/stupid) to dive at the feet of goal hungry strikers.

Personally I always thought it's a bit braver (or madder) to go up for headers with the keeper coming at you all punchy and the defenders' elbows flailing all around the place.

But maybe it's just me.

Goalkeeping insanity isn't that much to do with bravery. It's about being a natural loner, and doing a job that no-one else wants to. Remember that most "keepers" in the lower grades get shoved in there because they're unpopular or fat or something.

So what's your "something" Doloras?

(you'll always be a "keeper" in my books)

I was unpopular and fat. But I exercised and watched my weight, and now I'm just unpopular.

I actually got asked the other day about how I can throw myself at peoples boots for the ball

My only honest answer I could come up with, was that it seemed like a good idea at the time.

And that's all there is too it. We do what we know we have to, which is to keep that ball outta the net no matter what

If you're anything like me in goal, you need a good sense of humour. Believe me, i get the piss ripped out of me at training, especially when things aren't going my way. So it's important to be able to laugh at yourself and not take it too seriously.

Three for me, and two for them.

Funny, my team seem to be slightly afraid of me.

There's now a link to Tom's Tantrums blogs on the page.

I think Tom is a cross between Spike Milligan, John Lennon .... and Foal30 (or Roger Irrelevent).
