So a possibility of cancellations tomorrow then.

I'm gonna be pissed if the early game is moved from Newtown this weekend. This "blanket ban" approach is absurd, we should expect them to assess each ground individually. Newtown can handle two games easily.

Are you aware of the work that was done to it before the NZFC season? It should be miles better this winter.

My understanding is because of the nature of the issues the irrigated grounds would be treated differently to the ones that aren't. I presume Newtown is irrigated?

I don't see what irrigation has to do with it. Each ground should be assessed on it's drainage and soil structure. Newtown has been gravel/sand banded which will improve the drainage. Trevor know's what he's doing, so I assume Newtown will be treated differently. I sure hope so.

You're the professional in this area but because the question is about how hard the grounds are and what that means for grass growth or lack of it doesn't drainage become a non-issue?

"Even if we get heavy rain the ground is so hard the water will sink into the first few millimetres of the field and run off, creating a mudbath." What I got from this is that the grounds are to hard for the soil to drain, which isn't the case for all grounds.

Be some pretty pissed off people if games are cancelled at the moment.

To be fair, the council guys probably saw the same forecast I did on Thursday evening which said we'd get 30mm+ today and we've had less than a mil so need not worry.

Would you rather be pissed off now and miss a game or towards the end of the season miss six games because we ruined the grounds too early?

Well, we have showers in the Hutt, and it's moved in from the south. So I take it that means it's been raining in Wellington for a while this morning.

I hope we don't get last minute cancellations.

Nah.  If it isn't cancelled by about 9:00 it isn't going to be.

Even the one time they did that two years ago there was much angst.

Just saw this on capital Football:

"Capital Football have just been asked to transfer games off grass pitches to the new artificial turf pitch at Te Whaea.

These games will be the first to be played on the new pitch.

Saturday:

9am

14th Grade JPL  Wellington College v Stop Out

10.45am

14th Grade Combined Miramar Dynamoes v Onslow Kapils

12.30pm

Capital 13 Brooklyn Northern v Karori Swifts

2.30pm

Capital 5 Miramar Rangers v Marist Inter

Sunday:

11am

Under 21B   Waterside Karori v North Wgtn United

These games will be changed on the Cancellations section on the website and broadcast on the radio.

The goals are located and ready for use (nets not provided) and there will be no corner flags.

Please be aware the site of the turf is still under construction and there are no changing facilities.  There are port-a-loos located at the venue.

The reason for the transfers is a request made by the WCC to get some games played on the turf to helps settle it down before it is inspected for its FIFA rating."

We win.
Rules are annoying though..

You have to appoint a ball boy who can chase any balls that go into the construction site. they must wear a high vis vest.
And there is a dedicated spectators area.

Chasing balls will be the most fun part of this.

Just have to make sure all shots are on target then

Actual truth. Not an RWC ground.

I was being a wee bit facetious- but it is actually a RWC2011 training ground- it was used in the bid document, and it had permanent rugby markings on it

Interested to hear how the games went on it- anybody on here play at te Whaea turf on Sat?

Dont really want to get in an argument with you on it but RLP is the ground, whether that includes Te Whaea will be decided at a later date.

Went and had a look up there on Saturday at the games being played, looks awesome. Having both markings on the field works really well. Issue will be in the carpark corner where a 2 meter fence and then not very far at all to quite a large bank. Once guys kick it down the first time they wont do it again.

The surface is great although my guys said it was a little slippery, this is probably due to the newness and will settle down.

The big thing is that it is basically dead flat meaning that the ball bounces true and will allow for nice quick passing games.  Length wise it is fine but is a little narrow (still within minimum Fifa size though), not much they can do based on the location but hopefully the next grounds are full size international pitches i.e. more than 60 meters wide.

Well done to the WCC a great facility and will be well used. The lighting they have there should be top notch with 3 lighting poles on each side and a cluster of lights on each pole, plenty of opportunity for night games methinks.

apparently there was a WCC vote to bring an artificial turf forward in the budget. Failed 5-10. Now you know who you should vote for at the next elections. Not Morrison

In favour - Andy Foster, Celia Wade Brown, Iona Pannett, Rob Goulden, Stephanie Cook.

Against -  Kerry Prendergast, John Morrison, Jo Coughlan, Ngaire Best, Hayley Wain, Helene Ritchie, Ian McKinnon, Bryan Pepperell, Ray Ahipene Mercer, Leonie Gill

you cant crucify people without all the facts.. has a site for the next turf been established, what were the councilors voting against its main concerns etc etc.
You should link the appropriate papers/minuites for WCC website for us to discuss.

fair enough to a point BBT. there will always be reasons for and against, but a vote like that is an useful indicator of a candidate's support for an issue, in this case investment in football infrastructure.

I think YF should write to each candidate in election build up asking for their position in respect to this issue and publish answers. wouldnt be difficult. answers, as well as voting record on issues like this, could also be circulated to clubs for distribution to members.

will remember to sort this out come September.

Last WCC election it only took a few phone calls and we had candidates on the forum itself explaining themselves!

Minutes not out yet. But from what I hear the logic against was things like 'we want more people to be more active - but this is too ad hoc'. Officers recommended to Kerry that she supported it, and she didn't.

There was also the view of 'what's wrong with some mud' - so some councillors don't get it that grass gets trashed and becomes literally unplayable.

What people need to consider is this is an election year in Local Government and councillers are reluctant to support anything that may alter the ltccp's budgets in fast tracking projects as this can have significant effect on yearly rate rises.

You wouldn't normally alter and fast track projects from your ltccp unless it was major emergancy work such as you Wastewater Treatment Plant needed repairs or you had major water reticulation problems.

Just a comment on parks

My god Kilbernie - the sandpits - you can't call them anything else - the council created when they tried to fix it 6 weeks ago. WTF

A womens premier game got called off, when it was meant to be played there today. Unplayable was reason given. Grass that is a good 10 cms high in places. But a totally rock solid and mowed cricket wicket - it is a travesty.

I love playing at home - but any team coming to play is there is just going to go WTF, and then blame the pitch if they lose. And fair enough really

ok rant over
