Duly recognised...!! I agree with you. And good on them for that. I for one applaud their efforts. Everything done for the good of football deserves praise. Just as far as grounds go, I think there are big inroads to be made there, and I would hate to see money thrown at some sort of 'band aid' solutions, when a long term fix is a better solution. A few years ago, the council stopped rolling the pitches flat, so many of them are really not in good condition at all.

When did you last play there? we had a pre season friendly with palmerston north marist 1sts there last season in late march as its roughly half way and the fields were in very nice condition.. i didnt see any horses or paddock fencing.. the river and the big trees around it give it a nice atmosphere i thought...

Played on Karori number 1 close to the end of last season, draining was not good at all, hope it improves for next season.
 
No improvement !!!!  looks like if it rains Karori Park is out, the drainage is 1st class so they tell me. Your having a laugh. They even moved the 1st class cricket match from here with the pitch not up to standard -

I refereed there a few years back and thought it was OK.

The clubrooms are great though.
And it's just growing pains with the pitch, eventually it'll be one of the best in Wellington.

I played the first game of last season at Cobham Park and it was like playing on concrete.  Fast forward twelve months and it was like playing in a big paddling pool!

Wakefield Park - shaddy ground down far end.  Played there last season needing a draw against the bottom team.  There was a strong gale wind, while playing on this mud - slush combination.  It is in a small enclosed area.  Terrible!  It was unplayable and we drew nil all.  No one could get a strike on the ball!
 
Melrose Park - if nothing else, for the novelty of the animals lurking a mistimed clearance kick away from the field!

Wakefield Park aka Shark Park.

The two grassy knolls in both halves of the number 1 field where the softball diamond was.

Shambles.

Didn't cut up on Saturday though which was good.

its like deja vu all over again cos i am sure i already said this on this thread but;
Melrose is one of my favourite parks in Wgtn- idiosyncratic is the ionly way to describe it

In its favour its big and wide, got good soil, sheltered from North and South winds, got a play ground and baboons for the kids, and slight depression on the northern side where you can hide short arsed wingers!

 Against is the cricket pitch and the obvious deterrent of wild animals for the classic full back's clearance over the fence

Having played mumble..mumble number of years in the lower grades, here are my picks:
 
-Raroa
-Happy Valley (when it turns to a bog and smells)
-Wilton (I reckon you could make a fortune at Wilton hunting down all the balls that have gone over into the trees)
-Mt Albert
-Velodrome (once played there in July when the ground was entirely covered in 6 inches of water)
-Mazengarb (windswept hole in the middle of nowhere, sorry Paraparaumu)
 
The historic worst one for me is the old Southgate Park, up in Houghton Bay, above the hockey stadium.  The pitch faced east to west and in a howling southerly we were continually losing balls from corners when the wind picked up the ball, blew it across the front of goal and over a two metre fence.
 
The worst match I ever played was at Arakura out in lovely Wainui.  The ground was okay but some moron in the Council had plonked a 3/4-sized pitch and goals on the field (in an area big enough to hold 2 full-sized grounds).  Only reason we didn't complain was that we won.

Couple of points. I don't know if they still play football at Strand Park  but that was always a "nice place" when a southerly was whistling through. Straight up the harbour entrance and straight up the Hutt river. It was also a prick to rescure a ball from said river too! Grenada North has an interesting ground, any ball sent into the trees along one side of the pitch requires a hundred foot climb down to retrieve.
 
Harcourt Park, Memorial Park in Petone always had great surfaces when I was playing as a youngster. Even the Basin Reserve wasn't as good. I played there and it was quite boggy.
 
I had a run around on an artificial surface once or twice. They loaded it with sand to kill the bounce and watered it to try and help. We all greased up in vaseline to protect our legs and arms on the slides.
