This coming Saturday afternoon Newstalk ZB in Wellington are ranking the five worst Wellington sports grounds to watch/play sport on.  Any contenders?

Cobham Park has to be up there for me - hardly a blade of grass to be seen when we played there late last season.  And Melrose Park - don't kick the ball over the fence because it lands in the lions enclosure at the zoo and doesn't come back...

Alex Moore Wembley is the best pitch in town.

Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite

Crawford Green isn't too bad. Look at parks like Happy Valley, a mudpool with goals. When there's wind Kilbirnie Park is a shocker

I think pitch wise it has a nice playing surface at times, but because its exposed, the wind hits it like a brick sh*t house, and when it rains it tends to turn into mulch.

I agree,  Happy Valley for sure.  Ive never been happy to play there,  the crossbars are too low,  the pitch is never in a good state and when you kick the ball over the fence its a mission to go and get it.

Ive heard that Karori Park is starting to deteriorate as the new drainage is not to flash,  could this be a contender? Pudleypool2007-07-02 14:55:51

The worst pitches to watch sport on are the rugby only grounds.

The worst thing about happy Valley is the strip of dirt down the middle where the artificial cricket pitch would be. Played there a couple of weeks ago apart from that i was in good condition. But cause of the rain it will not be the best having to play there.

The drainage is good - just gonna take time for the soil to loosen up so water doesn't sit on top in a downpour

Hey I train at Melrose park, with the new lights its not too bad, and you always have the soundtrack of baboons and lions to enjoy

I've always thought the Velodrome pitch aka the bobbledrome  above the hataitai netball courts was pretty bad

Happy Valley  - really enjoyed travelling 30 plus k's to play at this pitch, cold crappy venue. On the plus side you never have to worried about the sun, cause its usually gone by mid-day.Who ever named this park needs shooting, HAPPY VALLEY me ass

I have two mentions:

Miramar 3, two or 3 years ago there was a square hole in it and the council had folded atraffic cone over and stuck it in the hole to try and make it level with the ground. ridiculous

And wakefield park, the one on the lower level that is right next to the bank. After a good rain one side of the pitch is flooded.

I hate Redwood - sit on one goal line and you cannot see the other crossbar because of the slope of the pitch.

By far, worst pitch for me is the one out at Eastbourne (Bishop Park I think)... run down a bank to take one corner, try not to trip over tree roots on another corner, and the goal boxes are full of shells to shred your legs if you go for a slide...

Top 5 WORST grounds...

1) Hutt Park Raceway - exposed, derelect old thing, feels too big, always has crap weather and generally crap results there for us, bad omens, even if it is our home ground.

2) Cobham - Especially crap at the start of the season (rock hard) & end of last season (all that rain, 6 weeks of consecutive cancellations!). Exposed to the elements.

3) Wakefield - One side doesnt see sun for 6 months of the year, very slugglish on the eastern side.

4) Fraser Park - Played there last season on the back of all that rain and the 6 consecutive weeks of cancellations so was a mud bath, got pumped 5-0 by Miramar Rangers to make matters worse. Always lose there.

5) Happy Valley - Basically a wind tunnel, loses the sun at 10am on a good day in mid winter.

Melrose - The option of subbing on a baboon if required. Played Wgtn Utd Salmon there in round 3, I actually really like it apart from the artificial cricket pitch in the middle (just sand in the soccer season).

Best Ground? - Can't beat our beloved Trafalgar Park on a sunny day and provided conditions are good with the grass recently cut. Immaculate and level turf on a good day.

Worst
Anderson Park. Had a bog in the middle 6 weeks ago and it hadnt even started raining yet.
Wilton. When the ball goes over the fence there are no zoo animals to throw it back. More wind blown in a northerly than any other park in Wgtn.

Best
Endevour and Brain Heath.

haha andersons soccer pitch back when playing for coll. Didnt stop that hatrick but u knw it was a pain. And bro Crawford aint that bad at all!!! Melrose is pretty bad at times lol and the lions arent that bad its good to see them all come up to the fence and enjoy the football at times. Best park is Centenial. Newtowns nice but its too open and puts u off when u shoot. However Centenial is closed in and is much easire to play on. Also feels much smaller.

Harcourt park is the best ground. Worst pitch is Happy valley easy. Went there once and there was a hole about a foot deep, just outside the 18yard box.

Has to be a toss up between Crawford Green and Cobham Park. Happy Valley an honourable mention - esp in a southerly.

Harcourt Park the best! Enough with the comedy. Heard of Centennial, Newtown, Porirua Pk??

They last time i played at Centennial it ripped up like a pitbull on a cat. The dicks on balcony were throwing bottle caps at the players to.

Speaking of Cobham park, looks like its lifespan is limited, if they go ahead with the Indoor Stadium....wonder if there's a big game planned for the farewell, whenever that may be  (Insert Tui Slogan here) wulfsteam2007-07-12 11:21:55

Wakefield: Bottom Pitch- small and boggy, plus broke my arm their in m y Capital Soccer debut VS IBU Vauxhalls

Velodrome: WTF? you can score from anywhere on the pitch its so small (Hang on- thats a good thing)

Wilton:  A bog at the moment

My vote for best pitch is a sunday league secret: Rongotai College (Home of Shamrocks and Blazers). its a level, sand based pitch which keeps rrim all season pluc lYall bay Bowls club is always good for a post match debrief & in a Southerly keepers get on the scoresheet

Blaze on!

Karori Park should have had another million spent on it - maybe even an up-grade with drainage .Bugger when you forget to put in drainage.Happy Valley has lost my vote JUST.      Karori pitch in wet weather is a shambles

Karori Park is a complete waste of 2 million dollars. Viewing is average and the surface was aweful. Why you you put junior games on the numbers 2 pitch before a senior game and leave the actual junior pitches unplayed on? Number 2 was a swamp over 80% of the surface. No1 looked OK to start with but with standing water on a lot of it, it soon chopped up. It also didn't look level to me. It seemed to slope away towards the cricket nets and it laos kicked up on the near side touch line.

Its no longer a problem.

Eastbourne got promoted. Now, according to the Eastbourne Herald the council are under some obligation to UPGRADE/SORT OUT the pitch because of that promotion. I think Capital Soccer have said they can't play Capital Three with a pitch that interesting. My italics.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Just so people know it is the karori club that puts juniors on the senior grounds NOT capital football.  we stick to the junior pitches.

this may change next year once the surface at karori is sorted out.

We have just spent the season playing at Liardet Bog, opps I mean Park. But we are only juniors so who cares. The surface is ok until the first rains of winter, then it rapidly detriorates. The ditches around the edge hold water well....isn't that what they are there for? Played one game at Posgate and one game at Grenada Nth, both in excellent condition..
