my point exactly - user pays! if u can't- tough ! go play rugby where they will pay for everything.
while spoilt little rich kids get all the fame at top level here in NZ. If there's any reason why NZ football is lagging behind the rest of world, that's why. soft, dummy-sucking, spoon-fed, spoilt little rich kidspizda2009-07-07 12:23:13

Great, go get sky to pump hundreds of millions into NZ Football and i'm sure development programmes will be fully funded, and a 27 team professional football competition and...

Until then, they can't exactly make money appear out of thin air.

100% correct ! must find major corporate sponsor like other codes. bring back tabacco sponsorship, that's when we were any good.

nice pompous, higher class statement, didn't expect otherwise from you knightz.

the same could be said about champagne breakfasts and dinners being sacrificed to donate
to one deserving young athlete. At least you'd get a third back as a rebate.

I still don't understand what you think the solution is.

Is it that tours like this not be done because not everyone can afford it ?

Incidentally (back on topic) the boys were unlucky to lose the final 4-3 to a side they beat in round robin play.  They have now headed north to play in the second tournament of the tour.

What a load of bollocks. For a start it's just not correct. Some of the boys on this trip and the last are not from wealthy backgrounds at all.

Second of all the boys had something like six months to fundraise. Many of them did.

Thirdly why should it be free? It's not an official national team and nobody is forced to go. All of the good players in this age group in Wellington were invited pretty much. A fair few said no.

Anyway. Back to more interesting matters. Having failed to secure tickets to MJ's memorial we will spend today celebrating His memory at the beach before a tour of University of California, Irvine and a lecture from the NCAA about college soccer.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Good on you Smithy! Another good showing on this trip so far! good luck to you and your boys for the up and coming tourney.
I was not from a wealthy backround either when I was younger and my parents had three footballing kids, although when it came to one of them going overseas for a football trip absoloutley anything was done to make it possible. Fundraising, heading to buissness for sponsorship help etc... luckily for us we also played for a club who would often helpout in one way or another too. No matter where you come from a trip like this is a great idea and is well worth it for the kids and families who can put in enough time and effort to make it happen.

Haha, nightz we don't agree often, but that made me crack up

Love the assumption that all great footballers are from lower class backgrounds.  I guess any kids whose parents can pay their club fees should just give up the game now, you've been told, you're not going to make it

smithy, you are doing a great job and your team should be proud of results and achievements.
My point, assuming it costs in excess of 3000 return and up to 1k more for expenses,( is that pretty close), unless i'm the son of a club official and my uncle own's a football club, and i walk in to that club and have it mentioned across the whole club that i'm fund-raising for this trip, and then guess what, i walk out with a huge contribution, then i got 2 show's of coming up with the funds if i'm talented enough, with parents that don't smoke, drink etc..above all still POOR.
the recent influx of migrants from talented footballing nations in Africa and the Arab nations have huge barriers to contend with when trying to fit in to mainstream kiwi life. For most in this situation the ability to afford such a trip for their talented son is impossible to budget,  let alone having to fund-raise in a community that has a stereo-type impression of them already, racially motivated in most cases.
I can hear you say, where are they then? and that's my point, stopped at the 1st hurdle !

james dean i never made that assumption. i just wanted to compare a silver spoon-fed kid to one that comes from a poorer back-ground who will work harder for success than the one handed it to him on a plate.
I had to decline my very talented son this opportunity because i have 3 other kids to feed and a 200 k mortgage .however i still struggle to pay all 4 player's sub's every year and i don't think
i can class this as being rich in your opinion.

Cant afford to run for PM thank goodness.

Fact of life that not all kids can go on these trips or attend fed training etc. Harsh realility, just like when I was a kid only those that could afford it got to go to university, no student loans in those days. There are still lots of fundraising opportunities out there and businesses/Lions/Rotary etc that are prepared to help out kids but its having the time (when you have other kids to care for) to hunt them out.

If a kid is very talented, then the parents should just get a better job paying more so they can afford to go on trips, etc.  Give up their job sweeping the floor at the local freezing works, and become a lawyer or banker.

Simples.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

certainly not trying to give you any grief rgarding paying for kids and sports teams, I'm sure that it is very hard on parents and childrebn alike when have to miss out for various reasons.  I just don't think that those that can afford to go should be
criticised or assumed that they themselves haven't worked hard to get there - as Smithy said some of the kids have been fundraising for 6 mths.

Anyway, you've identified the problem, but as people have asked what's the solution?  Now that big wednesday has gone this issue isn't going to go away

Nightz for PM, now there's a scary thought

how about this as a solution- clubs, junior & senior, charge and collect a minimal levy of say $5 on top of subs, that can be invested, with youth type scholarship/sponsorship schemes being offered to those talented player's within the club, that meet an agreed criteria. On-going fund-raising ie-raffles, car washes etc can be promoted to help fund the scheme within each club.
this scheme would help those specifically in need of financial assistance to attend federation, district, maybe PDP, and  national  acadamy's. I would like it to see it  be extended to those that simply can't afford to play from the community itself by enquiring at school's and community groups, which is what I call the 1st hurdle. Maybe something like the CF scheme to promote football to girls at school's.
I have suggested this to my club over the years with the usual "sounds good" response.
Obviously the implementing of this scheme needs nutting out, but in essence, it's intentions mean well and deserve exploring.
Hell smithy, if it kick's off,  club's will be bending over backwards to give you funding based on #'s from their club involved.
Every kid deserves the opportunity to show off their talent, rich & poor.
