The core of the Thistle squad is quite young. Even their English imports are around the age of 20ish. They had to deal with a lot of their squad players like Patterson or Aldridge not coming back from last year, as well as players like Jimmy Sommerton, Hills, and the other Gisborne Boys players that have made the switch to United over the last season and a bit. They have been a bit bare-bones when it comes to squad depth which showed early in the season when they had a lot of players either injured or away.
In their Starting 11 against Western Rangers, I'd say that 8/11 would have been under the age of 22, and 6 out of those 8 being under 20. Not to mention the CDL players that made up the bench.
Regarding top 4, I'm assuming they'll push Havelock all the way for second place. They're on a 5 game win streak and have notched some very impressive wins in that time, particularly their 3-1 win against Havelock. If the rumors are true that if a team finishes above you you play them away in the top 4 games, then they'll only really have to travel to HB for Wanderers, providing HNW don't slip up against Vale.
When everyone is available, their starting 11 is easily top 2 quality in the league, their poor start has cost them but the quality is definitely there for them.
I’m glad they have a good focus on the youth at the moment. I always enjoyed travelling to play Thistle, you knew it was going to be a tough battle on the pitch, but always super welcoming off the field.
Will be interesting to see how the top four goes.
Top 4 is locked in, 2 and 3 could change, but that’s would need the unlikely Havelock to lose to Maycenvale (and more likely Thistle to Win)
1. Gisborne United
2. Havelock
3. Thistle
4. NCR Reserves
If it finishes as above. Central football has previously done home/away as below
United home to Havelock and Thistle, away to NCR.
Havelock home to Thistle and NCR, away to United.
Thistle away to Havelock and United, home to NCR.
Whether CF go with that, who knows 🤷♂️
