VILLAGEBOY floated the idea for such a thread but was unsure as to how it would go.I think its a good idea so I'll kick it off,,,,

Around the time I started playing senior footy,Stop Out  had a young fellow Robbie ten Brooke making waves.I think he may've even played for NZ(not sure) Ii seem to recall he mighty've even gone to Holland to try his luck there...Last I heard was he was in NZ but never heard about him playing again, certainly not at a high level.Anyone  fill in some spaces?

Thought he was up the Coromandel somewhere. He got a whack from some talentless ******  and didn't play again.

At about fourteen he was in Holland with Ajax. Performed well and came back here. Played for Stop Out for a bit. I'll get the complete details and post them later...

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

He got hurt here in NZ. (My memory is getting worse. Robbie's cousin gave me all of the details just a few weeks back. )

Hey thanks Accy for getting this going, we have been having some fun with this on the Stop out thread under regional football, Lets see how  this goes on the main forum.

Robbie played for NZ at senior and U19 levels. I think he was circa the Rufer / Dunford era

Rob was a good Porirua boy. Played against him in the mid 70's. He would now be about 46 yrs old.

From his cousin "Robert lives in Carterton and is a very good musican, He has also built
a recording studio at the back of his house and makes money out of that.
I haven't seen him for a while and I would really like to catch up with
him. He stopped playing cause when he came back to NZ from playing at
Ajax & Alkmaar he played for Stop Out. First game, some dirty ****
smashed his knee and that was that."

Some more names I would like to put out there: Dave Houghton, John Enoka, Willie Straw and the Winter boy's Tom and Glen? to keep the ball rolling

Cannot help with all but John Enoka is in Australia and runs a gym there, either Sydney or Brisbane.
he used to be a personal trainer at the Te Aroha gym at TeWhiti Park.

Is Willie Straw a real name?

Thanks, zinger, JE was certainly one I was wondering about too. I only saw him play one season for Stop Out, but I remember what a tough player he was. Wore his socks down around his ankles and never shirked the hard tackles.

Yes Willie was real alrignt, used to come down from Palmerston Nth for training.

John Enoka was a very talented sportsman who I am sure played softball for NZ as well as being a Chatham Cup winner with Gisborne city, Grant Turner also played rep softball out of the Railways club.

Tom Winter stuck with the employer he left school to work for, NZIG, now known as BOCGAS.After holding senior positions in NZ was transferred to Canada where he has apparently done very well.
Glenn is still in Wellington, working in the financial credit industry.

Villageboy. I asked if you knew Mel Spelling who played at Petone with Clive Davis. Your connection with Clive obviously comes from his time at Stopout where he went to for the first season of National League. (1970). Mel played in the same team as Clive at Petone before going to Wharfies.

I recall seeing a photo of the Wharfies team in 1970 and they had 9 players, the manager and coach who had all been at  Petone the previous season. Good old Tom Heenan. RIP.

Thanks again Urion you seem to know alot about Petone and I think I have an idea who you are but I wont go there,

Its great throwing these names up but I wish others would too, this thread could turn into a historical page full of good info.

From that Clive Davis era John Bradbury, Tony Evans, Alan Kearton, Jack Shaw spring to mind. I know Jack and Alan are still around the Hutt but not sure what happened to Tony and John.

Tony Evans has been living in Auckland for several years now. Catch up with him from time to time, the most recent was when he was down earlier this year to have his walk of Champions plaque unveiled in Jackson St. The plaques are for Petone people who have representated NZ and there are about 200 of them now.

John recently retired as President at Petone, but still attends the games.

As you say, part of the fun of participating on this site is the annonimity. My knowledge of happenings at Petone and the fondness of Claret and Blue probably make me a bit of a giveaway to anyone who knows me through football, but you cant lie about loyalty.

Anyway, Villageboy, Here is a real did you know...

In one of your earlier postings you mentioned how Jim McCreadie was a real Stopout person.
Well for all his rivalry with the club across the river, he actually wanted to play for Petone when he first arrived, but couldnt get a game.
He had come down to Petone Rec when he arrived in NZ in about 1952, and being a good Rangers man, chose the blue jersies as his favourite. (Not that he would now admit it). Unfortunately he stood on the sideline with his boots, unnoticed by the coach, one Andy Leslie senior. The rest,  they say, is history.

Obviously AL snr was putting him to the loyalty test and I guess he failed. anyway Jim put me on the sideline more than once. AL snr also ignored his son cause he wandered off down the Rec and never came back.

Sorry to be taking over this WHT thread but I must say I am really enjoying it, it's like catching up at a funeral but on here no ones sad or happy at losing someone.

I mentioned Enoka and Turner before as being Softballers, So too was Wayne Smith, he was a no nonsense type of footballer probably one of the only guys that could keep GT in line from what I remember, I last heard he moved up to New Plymouth.

Wanganui I think it was. He is now back down here and involved in the Petone Rugby Club.
In fact he was the spokesman on a club feature on tv a while back. His son plays for the team and I think has represented NZ at schoolboy level. Wayne was an Under 19 rep at left fullback in the days of Glen Dodds.

I recall a few people trying to keep GT in line. Eddie Phelan, Steve Dunn and Wayne all tried the physical approach, whilst Peter Dunn, myself and Bruce Hilder (Railways) all used a more diplomatic aproach. Personally at the end of the day, he wasnt really too troublesome and I still enjoy a chat and a beer with him on the odd occassion we bump into eachother. As for football, if only he had the opportunity that the young players have now to get over to the UK. And would Gordon Strattan have handled him in Spain if he hadnt got injured? Better than Rufer??

Ha, no sh*t.

I worked for BOC in Australia and Europe for five years until returning recently to work full time for Yellow Fever (yeah, right).  I knew Tom reasonably well.  He is very senior in (may even be head of) BOC's Canadian business and well regarded around the world.

You could almost certainly reach him at tom.winter@boc.com or tom.winter@linde.com

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I recall as a junior,SEATOUN had 3 NZ internationals in their side at once, and they were only CL1,not national league!!   Off course they soon departed-Graham Bilby(double international) to Wellington City, and Graeme Pedersen and Mike Jones to Stop Out (that club crops up a lot on here.) Whats up with them now???

Wasnt it Graham Peterson who played in goal for Stop Out, Mike Jones was a butcher in Tinakori Rd but is probably retired now, Him and Dugdale were like a brick wall.

Vic Deverill(sp)...he was the man responsible for the wonderful NZSOCCER ANNUAL that came out in the 60-80s (and may still do).Choca with facts and stats,it was a real 'must' for a footy nut( I have several).Thought he was from Hutt Valley,  then moved to the North shore, but I'm possibly wrong. Is he still about?  yea   Jones and 'Pedro' (he was a jewellary manufacturer) went to Stop Out and Bilby to Wellington City(or Hungaria firstly), but they were internationals while at Seatoun.

Vic was involved with Waterside, working on the wharf as they all did in those days. (The unofficial boot suppliers to Welington Football). He lived in Melrose behind the zoo before moving to Auckland. He died about 10 years ago. Cancer I think.

I think things might be slightly different regarding the publications. Vic wrote two books, one about the Central League first ten years and a similar book about the National League.
Barry Smith was the editor of the Football (Soccer) Annual although maybe Vic did take it over. I had all of them since 1967, the season before Central League started, and had several requests from players about their appearance numbers. I handed them into the club I was involved with once I moved away.
What club were you involved with down here AS?

As mentioned earlier,i was a junior at Seatoun, and had a couple of part seasons with them as a senior. My main senior clubs were the mighty Raumati Hearts,Manawayu Utd and Massey Uni.
Thanks for the stuff about Mr deverill.I most probably are wrong about him compiling them but I do recall that I had to order all the back copies I wanted from him.

The 1968 Annual  only had a small publication  and became quite rear. I managed to get one from Barry Smith and he had typed up a couple of appearance pages for the club I was involved with.
I think Barry is in Auckland now. The first year of Central League in 1968, was poorly recorded, especially the second division. I seem to remember Seatoun won the second division in 68 scoring about 150 goals from 18 games. St Andrews and Lansdowne got thumped weekly. Petone finished third with 75 goals. That was when Clive Davis was playing.
Massey and Manawatu had a bloke Terry Richardson playing for them around that time. Fullback.

Not absolutely sure but think Stop Out might have won DIv 2 that year and Seatoun second.
As mentioned previously seatoun probably had three NZ players in that league that season.
Brings back memories of watching two CL games a Saturday at the Basin - early game on No 2 and main game on No 1.
Wharfies supporters were pretty hard core.

You are right. Stopout did win it and went on to finish in the top three next year and get their place in the inaugural Nat League with Gisborne and Western Suburbs. Hungaria later went on to beat North Shore for the last place after Caversham pulled out. Eastern Suburbs, Blockhouse Bay Mount Wgtn and CHCH Utd made up the eight.

Ahh CHUBBS...those early/late games at the Basin...Trevor Rigby would do a radio commentary and sometimes Gordon Whyte????? (I'll stand corrected.)  I remember we got to play on #1 pitch as the curtain raiser to the main National League game .I scored a brill diving header (we lost 6-1 to Island bay) but know one -coaches/players apart - witnessed it as there was a massive crowd at the #2 ground watching Hungaria and Mirimar( I think,) do battle for the CL title.Might've ended 1-1 or2-2.Think Hungaria got first place.

Accy Stan - sounds like you are the same vintage as me .I too can remember playing Curtain raisers on the Basin No 1 at the same time as Centrallaegue games on No 2.
Don't think that your memories of Miramar - Hungaria are accurate as Hungaria never won CL. Might have been a Miramar - wharfies game.
If you were a junior at Seatoun in the mid to late 60's you probably played against me as I was at Miramar then.
On another subject the mention of Hungaria in another thread brings back great memories - particularly Lotsy Polyanskys penalties - a zig zag approach to the ball that probably had the keeper dizzy.

My father remembers playing against both Lotsy and Andy Polyansky, and he was one of those goalkeepers made dizzy by their skills! I remember the first time we went to a Stop Out match in 1980 my father was reading the SO team sheet and saw the name Polyansky on it. He did a doubletake, thinking for a second that one of the two brothers was still playing. It was Bruce of course.

He was also telling me about a legendary riot that occurred at a Hungaria v Apollon match many years ago when the referee, whose name was Maurie Swain (or something similar), was forced to lock himself in the changing shed to escape from the rampaging players and fans of both teams. Apparently this was such an ugly incident that the Apollon club was disbanded shortly after, or at least restructured anyway, later to re-emerge as the more genteel CYFC (Christian Youth FC).

I leave it to someone else to confirm the accuracy of this story!

Did you go to Evans Bay Intermediate?

Actually the game was against Miramar and played at Memorial Park. I watched in amazement. There had already been one Hungarian sent off, Beck I think, and then Swain sent Joseph Gaal off but he refused to go. He took the whistle off the referee and walked around for a shorttime blowing it.
Eventually a Police escort got Swain out of the ground. One of the memories of that game was the Hungarian keeper, Paul Watkins. A fairly cool customer in those days, he conceeded a goal and his biggest worry was that he had lost his chewing gum in the dive!!!!
The game was replayed at the Basin. Jim Zalumious was referree. He gave Hungaria a penalty, which was rather charitable. The Hungarians were not interested in charity and Lotzy sent the ball in the direction of the corner flag. I have a picture that I took of him taking the kick. He was told to retake it so he went for the opposite corner.
Hungaria went on to win 3 - 0. Thanks for reigniting this memory.

Your memories of Apollo becoming CYFC are correct, and then , of course, Olympic.
