Where is the O'Brien Shield

OK, where is the O'Brien Shield? Ridiculous that its gone AWOL.

It was a nice idea that added a bit of colour to club football. I think Feverish has a picture of Wharfies celebrating with it late in the 90s. I met Bob O'Brien after whom the shield is named. He is a Seatoun and Wellington club football legend - which makes it even more disappointing that its been lost.

I figure that there is plenty of collective club football memory on this forum to give us a fair crack of tracking it down. Who has any recollection of the shield beyond the Wharfies photo (which was 98 or 99 i think)?

There's a wee bit more info on the Shield and Bob O'brien on the latest Hand of God blog about Seatoun AFC - http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/blogs/hand-of-god/3209860/Seatoun-AFC-Once-mighty-still-proud

If it was last seen in Karori, then it may have washed away in any of the great Karori Park floods of 2007, 2008 or 2009. 2ndBest2010-01-07 20:32:48

there is another thread about this somewhere. From memory someone posted that the shield is hanging on a wall at Ole Academy. We had it in 2001 the last time we won something, or was it 2000?, anyway we took it off Lower Hutt after they held it for yonks. I think we lost it to Wests. From there who knows? Someone said Wairarapa, but a quick drive out to Ole might be the answer. From memory its a Ranfurly Shield type thing- the holder must be beaten at their home ground by a Wellington club for it to go elsewhere, so not every CL club can hold it, only the Wellington clubs (and that would have excluded Wairarapa too).

Let me know if you find it. Your're right the Shield would add some colour to the local scene (and some spice to games too). There's a lot of history in it as there is with the Venus Shield (and we have a photo of a Diamonds team from early 1900's holding that one). With the Venus shield too valuable to leave CF the O'Brien Shield is by far the best trophy around in Wellington Its a smaller version of the Venus shield (which now resides out at CF) but an impressive one nevertheless and should be displayed for football folk to look at.

I am fairly certain that Wests have it at Ole. i think Wests were the last to win it from Wellington utd. Would be great to see this again!! would definintly add some spice to things!

When I first saw mention of the shield in the previous Hand of God, it jogged my memory as to where I had seen it recently, and I believe rightstr & tafc are right.
Being a Wests player for the past 4 seasons I am 100% sure the shield is out there - located on top of the first cabinet on the left as you walk into the players lounge area at Ole (unless of course Matty C got it as part of his severance package).

I believe that Olympic FC should be the currents holders of the shield by being the last team to beat wests at their home ground...??? (stand to be corrected...)

Just got off the ph to hear that the ex Wests gaffer did not get it paid out to him. Instead he actually returned the shield to Seatoun during their Centenary celebrations. Nice touch! Good to hear its safe. Sam, apparently Matty has left you a message.

Next is for the powers that be to determine who the holders should be: the Bubbles or possibly the Seagulls; and also who it is played against i.e. first teams only?

question now is do you go through the records and track it back or just play on where it is now (or most recently was)?

SHould definitely be brought back, these kind of things can always make the season more interesting

I believe the rightful holders are now Olympic (whether they are aware i dont know) and plans afoot to have them presented with the Shield at first home game of the year. CF are onto it.

Great to see you guys slogging it out in the trenches, sticking up for the little guys who turn up week in week out for little or no reward.  I know some of you guys prefer the NZFC but I'm just one for mucking it in the trenches of Central League.  No actually scratch that, I'm all for the little guy, from now on I'm only watching Capital Premier and below, that's how much I'm in the trenchesjames dean2010-01-13 23:45:06

So what are the rules of engagement- competed for by Wellington District teams only, must be won by beating the holder at their home ground (what happens when a game is transferred off the holder's home ground),  chatham cup games count, any or all of above?

I like the whole idea apart from Olympic getting it first.

Surely it still counts as a home ground. Otherwise, if somehow whalfies won it, they wouldn't have to defend it ever.

Walfies might be the first team to ever lose the shield by default. Marius, what are the rules on the holder defaulting?

A quick look at previous names on the shield will show that it has been shared around the Central region, ie Gisborne City, Manawatu etc.. Even Wainui and North Wellington have their name on it.
Therefore it should be played between teams in the Central League. Chatham Cup games don't count and it only goes up for grabs at home games. A transfer still counts as a home game.
In theory Wests should be the first to put it up as they are the current holders and Olympic can't really have claim to it as it was never put on the line.

Why not Chatham Cup games? That way clubs that dont have a team in the Central League still have a shot at winning it.

So if the draft CL draw stays the same, Petone will have the first shot at the shield.
