A-league Expansion - Derbies

There are a lot of people pissed off that Gallop and co are announcing expansions and changes to league rules for next season when they are under investigation and likely to be sacked before then. The current board meanwhile is just hiding from the whole thing instead of assertively controlling the situation.

The game is drifting very close to an iceberg in Australia currently and the captain and officers are fighting over what the quickest way to hit it is.

Gallop has certainly selected low reverse gear but has taped his hands to the tiller

Saying that we can easily be replaced is like a giant "Fudge You" to all the Nix supporters.

Why would anyone buy a license for this league.

I'm inclined to agree

But it's the only one we've got

Another Aussie pundit suggesting the league get rid of the Nix unless things improve, including our on-field performance. Winning a bunch of games next season would be a great way to show we're making progress. And hard to dump us if we suddenly become one of the top teams in the league.

Just another Aussie making random statements without any basis in reality.  Did Del Piero really prove that big a draw card? I don’t think so personally.

Sydney's average attendance jumped from 11k to 18k when Del Piero arrived, it's now dropped to 16k (not incl this season which bizarrely is probably even less).

Though that was the same time WSW joined so would have got a bump from derbies.

I wonder if anyone here can work out the figures without the derby matches being included?

Would be interesting to see if/what the increase was with have DP there. While not absolute, will give us a flavour on whether or not a prime marquee signing has a significant flow on effect at the turnstiles. I know I made a specific trip to Wellington to watch him play [and there is probably no way to determine accurately what his effect was on away gates]

I did it last year but think I got bored and deleted it because I can't find the sheet (the NSW derbies numbers that is).

SBS The World Game " 5 Things we learnt from round 26"

They had to start with a Nix beat up

"There's real cause for concern across the Tasman, with Wellington Phoenix's current license set to expire the same year the A-League welcomes its two newest teams into the competition.

After deliberation initially allowed the Phoenix an incentivised 10-year license extension in 2016, their two conditional three-year deals are in grave danger after back-to-back seasons of deteriorating crowds and sub-par performances, heightened by their late 2-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory on Sunday.

The Nix's potential exit during the FFA's set 2020 expansion phase would decrease the league from 12 to 11 teams and raise hopes of a third entrant into the competition, with several clubs and projects currently in the midst of sending through their expressions of interest.

Phoenix on brink as A-League expansion looms

A third new team could enter the A-League in 2020 with the demise of Wellington Phoenix seemingly inevitable unless the club drastically improves their off-field performance.

Whether or not the Phoenix offer any real help to the game's growth in Australia has become a serious talking point for both fans and pundits alike, particularly when expansion talks intensify and the A-League remains without a capital club.

With all these uncertainties in the air, it's no wonder the club's co-owner Gareth Morgan admitted things "don't look great" in a recent interview with Newstalk ZB.

And if that's the kind of confidence the club's suits have publicly carried out, then it won't be long until the FFA bid farewell to yet another failed foray across the ditch."

They won't be trespassing because no one will support them, so Sydney FC won't be affected.

Disagree. Predict they will average home crowds of 10K plus over first few years.

Big catchment. Much easier stadiums to get to for locals that nightmare trek to Moore Park.

Throw in around 3 home derby games a year spread over Sydney & WSW, to boost the numbers.

Isn't Wollongong about an hour drive from the Shire? That's a bigger distance than to Allianz. Seems unlikely many people would do that trip in either direction.

Not sure that is as big an issue in the likes of Sydney and Melbourne as it is in NZ. People and sports fans are more used to and accepting of such travel. In Sydney, an hours drive is nothing. No doubt though some stadiums will get better numbers than others because of where the fan base is domiciled and because some fans won't want to travel the distance. Point I'm making is that while it is an issue, its probably not as bad as we Kiwis think based on our own experience.

But isn't the whole point of having a team in the Shire is becuase those epople don't travel 45 minutes to watch Sydney play?

45 mins from Shire to Moore Park would be a great run in traffic. I've never driven that route, but I'd say for a Friday night (do Sydney FC play Friday nights?) - that would likely double in time.

Also if you commute from shire to Sydney CBD Mon-Friday, going back in there for a football game on the weekend would be a huge drag. Many people like to live in the shire as is more relaxed than inner Sydney city, and that's where they prefer to spend their weekends.

There would be few games played at The Gong I suspect - and maybe those games would be a Saturday/Sunday afternoon slot, with trains direct from the Shire making it easier for travelling home fans. A drive south to The Gong would also be a more relaxing weekend motorway drive, than battling inner Sydney's traffic.

Sydney has a pretty good train system, and the Wollongong line seems to have added 'perks'.

I'm not certain that their bid is entirely based on that assertion.

Therein lies the answer to the Nix's woes. Introduce a similar scheme on the Parapam and Upper Hutt lines. Perhaps offer it on the return journey to prevent people not actually making it to Westpac after obtaining their free gift.

I think the best thing we can do is follow the Southern Expansion's lead and just make up figures.

The article a week or so earlier with the fellow accused’s defence - ‘basically what guy would turn the offer down’ - is also a colourful read.

The Wollongong Wolves would hate that Southern document. They want a standalone team, so I look forward to seeing what they have in store.

If you look at city stats such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Au... Gold Coast and Canberra stand out as the under-represented areas.  If you look at areas just smaller than Newcastle and Central Coast, Wollongong would need to tap into South Sydney, Sunshine Coast tap into North Brisbane, and Hobart include whole of Tasmania to get to similar numbers as Newcastle, Central Coast.

With NZ equivalent numbers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Zealand_... Wellington is ahead of Newcastle, and Central Coast in what they should be bringing to the table.

Mind you I look at those figures and think SYDx4, MELx4, BNEx2, PERx2, ADLx2, Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong,  Hobart gives you 20 teams,   Add in AKLx2, WLG, CHC gives 24 teams as long term goal.

Interesting stats. North Brisbane football folk travelling to Sunny Coast won’t happen. Highway can be a car park on weekends and train line poorly located currently as 25 min drive to stadium, from nearest station.

However Coasts popn continues to rapidly grow and local airport goes international 2019-2020.

Long term A league prospect for sure.

Gosford is only just over an hour drive north of central Sydney (probably being the closest town to Sydney that didn't impinge upon SFC rights to be being the only the club in Sydney for the first few years of the HAL). Imagine if Levin had a few million people spread either side of its centre, I'm sure a lot would come to the 'Nix.

Love this quote:

The problem is that we are more concerned with the 2,000 that stop showing up instead of the 7,000 that do. Around the globe, we see numerous examples of clubs working with far less numbers than we see attending the Aleague because they’ve grown to fit their surroundings instead of trying to be something they’re not. They focus on the fans they have and not the ones they dream of having. They adapt to the changing nature of fandom rather than remain prisoner of the metrics and behaviour of the past.

So I was listening to Greg O'Rourke on FNR. Expansion process is set up in two phases:

First phase is expressions of interest. They will accept expressions of interest from all areas and want as many potential bids as possible. In 60 days they will announce publicly the bids to go into the final phase for selection. (They want to create as much hype as possible).

Final phase bids will be the in-depth proposals: 2 new clubs will be selected and announced in October. (I think we all expect these winning bids will be from Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney).

FFA and A-league clubs want sixteen teams (straight from Greg's mouth). So the first phase sounds like they want to gauge all the interest and set up the best non winning bids for future expansion to sixteen teams (speculation).

FFA and A-League Clubs want 16  (Joke)

Let’s be fair, we should have won a lot more games then we did this season and had a lot more points on the board. Hopefully recruitment on and off the park in the off season will see us as a top 4 side next season.

For what it's worth

We knew the Mariners and Phoenix would make up the league's latter end for quite some time now, but imagine how much more exciting it could have been had relegation been at stake.

Had the A-League's last place been a direct drop to a second tier, the events that unfolded in both the Central Coast and Albany would have made for compelling viewing – especially if they were being played at the same time.

Just highlighting a nice out of context for SBS statement
