Ipswich is fair, but that Wollongong decision is absolute horse shark.
Been a bit of angst in Australia, last few weeks about what Australia's immigration policy should be. Also what is an ideal population size, plus where new immigrants should live initially - big cities, or be forced to live in rural areas for first 5 years etc etc.
National popn is projected to increase to between 30.9 and 42.5 million people by 2056. Is a wide range.
A middle of the road projection is a popn of 35.9 million by 2050. So just under another 11 million people (current popn just over 25 million) in 32 years. Sydney and Melbourne will both grow to around 7-9M people!!
A sweeping assumption that many of this new 11M will be immigrants, and another assumption that for many new Aussies, football will be their sport of choice.
Read Ange Pot's book a few months ago. He's a big fan of A League expansion, and as quickly as possible.

Still any Div 2 or A2 League you think would be operating on a tight budget. A team from Auckland may just be seen as adding costs, but contributing little or nothing in revenue ie similar arguments to some in Oz as to why the Nix don’t belong in the A League
I remember in the first few years of the Warriors being in the Aussie league, they had to cover the costs of teams coming to NZ to play them.
My impression would be no NZ team would get into the tier 2 including the Nix as a NZ based/playing team.

The existing board, whose chairman Steven Lowy will stand down next month, had planned to name the two successful bidders today (October 31) for entry into the league in 2019-20.
But, in a split decision, they instead opted to pass the ball to their successors, with all indications now that aspirants Canberra, Southern Expansion, Macarthur South West Sydney, Team 11, Western Melbourne Group and South Melbourne will have to wait on the sidelines for longer than they had hoped.

I don't have much to offer in regards to solution, I just look at the likes of the MLS with envy (can't compare their market size and economy I know). But if I reflect back, it's taking the Yankees 30 years (if not more) and several set backs to get to where they are.

The league definitely needs to expand to avoid stagnation and repetitiveness but I think the pro-expansion camp hugely understates the risks of expansion. You can't just make new clubs and assume they will be long-term, or even medium-term, viable. You can also argue that WSW were only successful because of huge levels of support from the FFA, which other expansion clubs probably won't get

I just get the feeling that a "slight" expansion could work at this moment - just to shake the market up a bit... But yeah no club outside of SFC and MVC (and maybe City) are doing that well financially (even WSW have dropped significantly of late) - but on the other hand we run the risk of running the most boring league ever... same teams, no relegation, nothing to strive for... hardly a recipe for success domestically and internationally.
I think 2 teams from areas that will not impact on existing teams will be the short term decision then 2-3 years - 2 up with Promotion Relegation the following year.

20 teams, play each other twice per year, top 4 make Home & Away semis, winners into grand final = 38 games minimum 41 games max. Nice long season. NO relegation needed as I think 20 teams would be the max the League could cater for. (1 Wellington, 1 Auckland, ! Christchurch)
I don't think the A-League will ever be able to support 20 teams, even if we include the likes of an Auckland/ChCh and Pacific Islands team.

And if the A-2 League was set up with only Australian teams (no guarantee a Kiwi team would be a look-in), what would happen if the Nix got relegated?
Would a NZ team be welcome in the second tier, forcing, as it would, other teams to start travelling to NZ for some of their games?
And would the Nix be viable at a lower, semi-pro level?

Us kiwis know that and so do most intelligent people involved in Aussie football. It's the ethnic clubs etc pushing this agenda forgetting that the NSL was nearly amateur at the end because of the number of teams involved and the lack of fans and finances available.

Some A-League expansion bidders are concerned that the new FFA Board will 'take the money and run', that is, take the highest license fee bid available, rather than the best bid. Some bidders are said to have offered up to $20 million after being encouraged by Deloitte to increase their financial offer. Deloitte's lead adviser is said to have no experience in "evaluating sporting franchise bids" and has shown little interest in the other criteria such as fan engagement, youth pathways and connection to the local area and football.
The Canberra Times is getting very confident about the Canberra A-League expansion bid with suggestions of five possible coaches: Harry Kewell, Frank Farina, Tony Vidmar, Luke Wilkshire and Paul Okon. Of those, Farina, Vidmar and Wilkshire have all spent time in the bush captial.
