Would be interesting if another franchise football (re the man city family of teams) decided to buy into the A-league (as per the rumours going round for ccm and jets). We could see the likes of a Auckland Red Bulls team :P

Surely the biggest question is if there is an Auckland A-league team setup will there be a forum as good as this setup for them?  I think not

Pretty much every football forum in NZ has turned into a tumbleweed place. In a lot of respects, I think its great that all football discussion is in one place because you get more people contributing and a decent conversation. Some forums you may as well be in an echo chamber.

We have seen ACFC's performance at the Club World Cup; Does that make anyone change their thoughts on whether or not we can sustain a 2nd A League team in NZ?

I dont think so. Its hard to say it would work when this side we have just seen wouldn't even be allowed to play in the A-League (too many imports). What happens if they got a team, and had a magic first season like the Jest did only to never get close to emulating that achievement for the next 10 years? They wouldnt last half as long. These one-off novelty crowds for the Nix are already severely dwindling after two lousy A-League seasons. Could you imagine a team failing to win in Auckland on a regular basis?

Still huge questions surrounding where they'd play etc;

Football-wise yes, the rest of it -wise I doubt it, but it would be awesome to have two NZ teams.

Player make up is only a small part of it I suppose [as personel change over time] but it seems as though ACFC itself might possess the adminstrative power to pull it off. They obviously have the ability to attract quality imports and already have some [if not all] that could play at A League level. The key may well be how many Kiwis there are floating around that can play at that level and what kind of pulling power they would have in attracting good quality Aussies. In terms of venue [and I'm obviously talking about Auckland here] there are a couple of options already - NHS, Waitakere, Eden Park, and Mt Smart [for a limited time]

Firstly, I agree with the point Jerzy was making re. a 4th expedition of an Auckland team to Wellington... the point being that maybe the gloss has worn off for an out of team franchise in a competitiuon the locals have no investment in. Perhaps it's not a good litmus paper test for an new Auckland franchise? Perhaps what is important is not how many people are attracted to attend a one off event in the week before Christmas with two significant other events on the same day, and poor whether to boot, but instead the size of the core support that could be generated and leveraged, and perhaps they are not the same things?

Secondly,

SurgeQld wrote:

Given one franchise isn't yet (nor has ever been) successful, what on earth makes people think a second one would work?... sure, things have changed over the last ten years but a lot of things haven't (like Auckland crowds, and stadium/s).

Let's get the Nix sorted out (ie: winning titles, getting good crowds, and being financially viable - oh, and having a licence) first before any pipe-dreams of a second club. As it stands, diluting our (NZ's) support/resources further would be the end of the Nix.

Dreaming. See you in 5-10 years (I hope).

As Jerzy replied, chicken, egg.

PERHAPS an Auckland franchise, and a local rivalry, and increased media interest as a result, and increased profile might actually be what gets not just the Auckland franchise up over the hump, but also what it takes to take the Phoenix to the next level.

You might rebut this by saying "and perhaps not", but - take a look at what has happened in Sydney with local derbies and rivalry. Look at the crowds in Melbourne derbies too (too a lesser extent) and the Big Blue and Victory versus Adelaide games, and Sydney vs. CCM "derbies".

Note: I am NOT saying this IS the magic bullet that will help over come ALL of the previous issues with Auckland teams.... but I do think it is hard to argue against the additional positive impact of having another "local" team and the associated rivalry. And remember, neither the Kingz or the Knights ever had a second NZ team and the associated rivalry and additional media coverage. So we have never tested this.

Thirdly, BUILD A PURPOSE BUILT NEW STADIUM for a new Auckland franchise. I agree - Mt. Smart #2 (and #1 for big games) is argubaly the best of any of the "existing infrastructure" models. But I think it could EASILY be bettered by building a purpose built stadium with an integtrated transport solution.

There are a number of places this could be done.

Unfortunately the best one (Carlaw Park) has been wasted. Glen Innes, Panmure, Mt Wellington, Ellerslie, Onehunga, Penrose, Greenlane, Avondale, Sandringham/Morningside/St Lukes, Wynyard Quarter, Orakei, and a number of other places in the inner West and even the southern North Shore near ferry and bus lanes could potentially work (I accept the last is a stretch).

Owairaka Park, Mt Albert.

Waikaraka Park, Onehunga would seem a likely contender for a new build from scratch.

I agree.

Funnily enough it's not actually their results at the CWC that make me think they should make a play for the A-League.

It's more that fact that here's an organisation that has consistently gone to the CWC and been organised enough and professional enough in their approach to perform well and get results.

It's with the people behind the scenes that ACFC's real competitive advantage lies and that's what they should be leveraging to get into the A-League.

My biggest concern with ACFC being selected for an Auckland franchise, would be whether the whole Auckland football community would get behind them? No clue about what politics there are.

The biggest problem for a team in Auckland is finding somewhere for them to play. Oh and obviously they need someone with a few million who wants to bank roll a team.

Nah, I don't think it would be. A-League clubs are given a grant from the FFA which covers players contracts. Auckland would have the advantage of recruiting players from New Zealand and Australia plus some visa players. I see no reason why Auckland would be unable to get a quality squad if they get a good stadium and good crowds.

Realistically, any chance of Nix vs ACFC in Jan? Would be good to have in Wgtn, since travel will be a b#gger, but that applies anywhere it's held.

I am not disagreeing with this.

The fact is that despite the improvements both of them are in horrible horrible places. Honestly, just look at where you can walk to for post match entertainment and festivities... errr, FAIL! For both of them.

Auckland needs a stadium, a good stadium, in a good position.

It's a travesty that a city the size of Auckland does not have a good rectangular stadium. They should build one at Wynyard Quarter... ferries, trains, buses, motorway hub are all close by. Bars, restaurants, parking... it all works. It just needs the city to drive it.

People keep banging on about easy access to after-match facilities but how much of an issue is this really? While a central city location [like the Cake Tin] certainly offers that, I recall places like Alliance in Sydney don't really have a lot nearby either. sure there is the Fox quarter but that is probably about as close as Eden Park is to similar places. I think the main factor is ease of getting to the venue. Aucklanders will travel to get to the places they want to visit [it takes most ages to get to and from work] and i don't see NHS as being too out of the way or inaccessible. I think its location is over-vexed by many from smaller towns, an example is that I lived in Auckland, sydney and London for most of my life and when I treturne dto HB, my mother used to make a bif fuss about me 'going out of my way' to drive from Napier to Hastings and back to pick her up. In Sydney Ii had to do those kind of distances just to buy a newspaper!!! NHS is fine as a venue and location IMHO.

I reckon NHS sucks the big one, personally. That is obviously just my opinion.

Agree with the rest though. Is not having a pub 10 metres from the gates that much of an issue? Really? Mt Smart, NHS and Eden Park are all within a reasonable distance of 'after-match facilities'. I've never failed to attend a match anywhere in the World because the ground wasn't close enough than I would like to somewhere I could have a pint afterwards.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Now that the Nix have been around for a while and taken the show on the road proving that they have fans all over the country,

Who would support a second NZ Franchise?

I live in Chch and I'm very passionate about the Phoenix. I don't think I'd dump my Nix gear and jump on a Chch team's bandwagon if there was to be one. I'd buy a season ticket at best to watch live football as a neutral.

That's the problem imo. The few football fans in this country that have some love left for the A-League are now Nix fans.

You don't think that with a good showing this season from the Nix the support/following of the A-League will grow?

And if there was a business case for another NZ club why wouldn't residents of the city it was based in get behind it rather than "that Wgtn"?

If a team suddenly popped up in Auckland I would still support the Nix . That doesn't mean that I wouldn't still snap up season pass to my local team in a heartbeat. How things go from there would depend on far too many variables. For instance any new owner could go all Clive Palmer...
