Feel sorry for all the Newcastle supporters in the crowd. Embarrassing for them.

Looks and playing like an U15 team with the 4th choice keeper.

Is this disrespectful to Australia football? Not sure.

Maybe things will change in the second half.

Gazza and his mates wouldnt have put up with this when they played at the Basin Reserve many moons ago.

Borderline disrespectful starting XI for NUFC but that's what you get scheduling a game like this a week after the end of epl season.
Fan turnout is also looking pretty lean

Yeah I reckon the Womens game will have a bigger crowd - this game kicked off at 5:05pm local time so a lot of people would've only just gotten off work when this started

Old and Paulsen did not impress tonight. They should have looked far better against this rabble. Our chances of keeping them for next season have gone up.

Nix players scoring the first and last goal, nice little bookend.

Scott Wootton playing all 90 mins and getting the Captain's armband once Marcelo was subbed.

Assuming Payne was injured so he couldn't play?

Ben Old did well. Too early for him to head over to Europe however. Probably betfer than Ben Waine, but no doubt will tap into Waine’s disappointing start to his European career before making a decision.

Paulsen had nothing to do and Old had a couple of bad touches amongst a lot of excellent ones.

If Old was tidying everything up there he’d already be out of the A League. Even in the top leagues in the top teams players miss the target, especially trying to beat a keeper at the near post.

And Ben Waine is number two striker at a Championship club. He’s had decent minutes considering that. He’s got a season goal tally of 5 and an assist in all competitions.

Sure he hasn’t set the world on fire, and maybe a competition down would have seen him with more game time, but he’s done very well in comparison to say Stanger or Pijnaker from the same under age WC side.

There’s a number of players out there for Newcastle tonight who may never play as much in the Championship as Ben’s done this season!

will be very interesting then to see what offers come in, from whom, and where the club sets the bar. If he’s still on contract at the end of next season then they could wait out until a decent offer comes in.

Ben Old didn't look the pick of the players out there tonight for me, I'm a bit surprised that he was named man of the match.

I'm not saying he looked bad, but that he should have looked better against easily the worst football team I have ever seen on television.

And he'd be a fool to leave the A-League this offseason. Look at Singh, look at Rojas, look at Kuol, look at Arzani, etc etc. He's too young, he should wait one more year.

Edit: at one point he was being given the run around in midfield by a guy he was tailing desperately for 10-15 seconds, didn't get near the ball. Looked like a bit of an idiot.

I don't - it's not a PL game. It's an end of season tour, what do people expect? And they already played a game a few days ago.

They expect to see newcastle play, if they're going to play the u21 squad then advertise it like that and don't charge first team rates.

If it was a team of fringe players that's one thing, but no players on the pitch had ever played a premier league match.

Clear naivety from whoever organised this fixture. Newcastle were clearly not contractually obligated to play anyone anywhere near the first team and so they proceeded to not do that. That's all there is to it. Forget the noise about it being within a week of the PL season ending, Newcastle signed up to that. APL or whoever was organising it should have paid a little more to ensure that at least some pseudo first teamers would make some cameos. What happened last night was no good for anyone, a complete waste of the players' and fans' time.

Remember that Newcastle is also doing this to increase their global fan base.
Previous clubs to tour  have provided competitive squads.

I think it was naivety by Newcastle

you don't honestly believe that the contractual terms for the teams that played competitive sides were the same as the terms for this game?

It’s Eddie Howe either
1) throwing his toys at having to play this straight after the end of season in a protest to someone in the club hierarchy

2) him not doing his research or caring about the level of the A league

3) a combination of both factors.

Which is disrespectful to people paying for tickets, who weren’t sold a kids only team.

He could have easily played a few first teamers for a short time, kept it interesting and not hung his youth squad out to dry.

I've got no idea, and neither do you. But the tour is not just a money making exercise, it's also a marketing exercise in order for Newcastle to grow it's global fanbase and as such Newcastle is incentivized to field a competitive team. This is a marketing blow to them and goes against what they were there to do, not to mention demoralising and detrimental to their reserve squad.

Really it's a grift, and Newcastle should be embarrassed.

APL at least got it right having the Women's game 2nd as the main event.

A near full strength Aresnal beating the All Stars 1-0. England star Alessia Russo with the goal.

Stott & Foster full games for the All Stars. Wilkinson off the bench at 79 mins (1-0) and apparently the closest to scoring for the All Stars.
