Remember that Newcastle is also doing this to increase their global fan base.
Previous clubs to tour  have provided competitive squads.

I think it was naivety by Newcastle 

I've got no idea, and neither do you. But the tour is not just a money making exercise, it's also a marketing exercise in order for Newcastle to grow it's global fanbase and as such Newcastle is incentivized to field a competitive team. This is a marketing blow to them and goes against what they were there to do, not to mention demoralising and detrimental to their reserve squad.

Really it's a grift, and Newcastle should be embarrassed.
