To be announced at 1pm

Manchester United, currently sitting on top of the Barclays Premier League, are set to tour Australia in the middle of 2013, with a friendly match against an all-star A-League team scheduled in Sydney for July 20.

Football Federation Australia will confirm the tour in a press conference at 11am (EDT). Bookmark this page and return for a live stream of the announcement.

It’s been 14 years between visits for the Red Devils, who are expected to attract over 82,000 to ANZ Stadium only three days after the final State of Origin game. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men would face an all-star A-League team, almost certain to be led by star marquee player Alessandro Del Piero.

The last time Manchester United visited Australian shores the roster featured players such as Dwight Yorke, Fox Sports football expert Mark Bosnich and Phil Neville.

The nix will miss out because we dont have any all star players, but if the a league is smart theyll put at least one in there.

Wellington Phoenix @WgtnPhoenixFC

Manchester United to play in Sydney next July against A-League All Stars! You can help 'select' Phoenix players. http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/manutd

[Edit: Hmm that link mentions nothing about selecting any players]

The game is scheduled for the same day as the first game of the Easy Asian Cup that Australia have just qualified for. Either the Socceroo's or the All Stars are going to be understrength, will be interesting to see which match FFA consider more important.

How many of the full strength Socceroos are still in the A-League?

There was a thread recently which asked for people to put together a best HAL XI with at least 1 player from every club. I don't think that many Socceroo's were in there and the current Socceroo team does not include most of its Euro players.

Is the East Asian Cup played in an international window?

I think Mooy, Archie, Milligan & maybe even Rogic, Emerton and Ryan could be in their full strength squad

Good point, Mooy Archie and Milligan wouldn't be in the All-Stars though.

20-28 July 2013, not sure if that's in a window. But it is pre-season, so clubs might be willing to let players go.

My big question about this, is how does it promote the A-League? Our season starts in October, and this is at the end of July. Any hype will be gone by then, so it just feels like a chance to grab a big payday.

Three days after a sold out Origin game 3? If that is a series decider, not sure how much limelight will be stolen.

Id have Mooy in the All Stars for sure.
Although I guess its gonna end up getting stacked with imports.
Wonder if players have to play or if they will be asked? And what sort of compensation they will get? Unless the FFA have some sort of clause somewhere for an All Star team?

Enough for John Aloisi to still bitch and moan.

I think it's kind of a shame that Del Piero would apparently automatically captain an A-League All Stars team. Hasn't even played a full season and has been slotted in with the shittiest team, latest result aside. Hasn't had that much of an impact anyway by my count. I'd want any A-League All Stars team to be stars of the A-League, not stars who happen to be in the A-League at the moment.

Have you actually watched him play? Some of things he has done with one working leg has been ridiculous. In a horrible team at that.

Our season ends in April and doesn't start until October, it will be interesting to see what kind of shape they are in during July.

I still don't know how a game in the middle of the off season is supposed to promote the A-League.

tickets ranging from 75-195ish.. From what I can see.

who's coaching the "all stars"?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

We should invite Man City over. They don't need money, so might be willing to come cheap.

Who would want to watch City????????????????

I'd go Siggy. I think Durante is better but I just feel like a Zvansviik Siggy CB pairing would be just swell.
(Ok it's because I want to see a kiwi punch RVP in the mouth...)

Did you manage to get a ticket Arnies? A mate of mine who is a massive Man United fan and lives in Melbourne tried for an hour online and couldn't get one.

They had the My Football Family Membership period to purchase so they shouldn't complain really. If they had supported football in oz they might've got one. I could have if I wanted to. Apparently there's a whole buch of comments at the end of a Newspaper article re the sell out from people crying over not getting a ticket & how they should be entitled to one as "they're the biggest fans ever".
