I get the aspects of the local rivalry but I'm more loyal to New Zealand than that.

Yes it would be a shame for the Nix if AFC get silverware before them but if they deny an Aussie team, then that's great as far as I'm concerned.

I have followed and supported the Nix since day one, and still do, however now Auckland is my number one because its my town and I was supporting the Kingz and Knights before that.

Each to their own

That's the other thing, I was too young to remember the Kingz and I actually had no interest in football when the Knights were playing, I used to always be a rugby guy (Hurricanes, All Blacks).

I mentioned this when I first joined the forum, I'm not actually a day one fan, I've supported the Phoenix since 09/10, before then, as noted above, I had no interest in football. I still obviously knew the big football clubs, leagues, and nations, as well as the All Whites and their accomplishments, 1982 WC qualification of course, but I wasn't watching any games. That was until I went with a mate, who had been a fan since our inaugural season, to the Phoenix's first game of 09/10 at the stadium against Glory which we won 2-1, thanks to Bertos's long range screamer.

From that game alone, I became invested and started to follow the Phoenix for the rest of the season, watching them smash GC 6-0, Dadi's bicycle kick on debut, etc. I also started to watch the few remaining AWs games that year and before you knew it, I was watching both the AWs beat Bahrain to qualify for South Africa, and the Nix defeat Glory and Newcastle at the Cake Tin.

Since then I have followed the Phoenix through and through each season, except for 17/18 when, for the first time, I took a break from watching them for a while just because of how bad that season was with Kalezic.

Today, I don't even watch the Hurricanes, the All Blacks or any rugby anymore, I'm all about the Phoenix, football, and the AWs, and I have the Phoenix to thank for that, which is why they are especially special to me.

Good to read your story and your passion
