I love the way Dunedin ranks waaay above Auckland as our second franchise.

Any potential names? .... The "Maori Hill Blues" has a certain ring to it.

Well Dunedin has a city council that seems determined to throw good money after bad in order to show just how viable their stadium is. A rate payer funded profesional sports team wouldn't be out of character.

Technically, Hindmarsh is on the western side of Adelaide. A second club in Adelaide would need to be based probably in the northern suburbs, which would require a new stadium in somewhere like Salisbury. Unless of course there really are people in Adelaide who are not engaged by AU but would be by another team based centrally.

This is the problem with second teams in Brisbane and Perth as well. There is little obvious catchment for a new team in any of the current cities,. Melbourne had a significant number of people who did not like the Victory, and Western Sydney was effectively an entirely new city. Woolongong/the Illawara makes sense because it is a similar situation to Western Sydney, but apart from that they surely have to look at places like Canberra and Geelong.

Are there things which make the Crows v Port Adelaide rivalry sustainable which are dramatically different from a potential equivalent in football? There probably are, I'm just curious as you seem to know Adelaide well.

Not really. Port Adelaide are a very old club that negotiated to join the AFL behind the backs of the rest of the SANFL in the early 90s. When the other SA clubs found out it created a big ruckus and the AFL agreed to let the SANFL form it's own team to enter instead. Thus the Crows were born, and Port Adelaide ended up being admitted in the late 90s. The only comparable situation in football is the NSL clubs that were upset over being overlooked for the A-League, but Adelaide doesn't have that as United was actually set up in the last season of the NSL after Adelaide City dropped out. City have spoken about wanting to make a bid for the A-League, but they would be relying on current fans and anyone else they can engage.

Edit: I should also add that Aussie Rules is the big football code in Adelaide, the SANFL final usually gets over 30,000 in attendance.

They share a stadium don't they? Closeish to Hindmarsh?

They used to play at the imaginatively named 'Football Park', but they've both moved to the Adelaide Oval.

I'll be there to watch the Dunedin City Couch Burners when they get admitted in the 2016/17 Season.

It seems kinda redundant tho, 7 out of 10 teams are eligible currently. Stars should be for multiples of 5 titles, not every trophy you pick up once.

The A-League Disciplinary Committee is such a joke.

It contains former high profile Socceroo player Dominic Longo who was sacked by his Belgian club Cercle Brugge in 1996 after he was caught in the club offices stealing money. This was an international news story back then.

A player sacked for stealing from his club on the Disciplinary Committee? Fudge me, now I can die having seen everything !!!

Longo was on the Disciplinary Committee that heard Seb Ryall's case this week for simulation in the Sydney FC vs. Melbourne Victory game on the weekend.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/663...

"Retrospective suspensions for simulation have been in place in the A-League since the 2009-10 season, but Ryall's case was the first to referred directly to the disciplinary committee by the three-man match review panel.

In the 2010/11 campaign, Central Coast Mariners' Argentine import Patricio Perez and ex-Perth striker Michael Baird became the only players in A-League history to be banned for simulation by the match review committee.

On Wednesday, a committee of John Marshall SC, former Socceroo Dominic Longo and barrister Peter Mulligan delivered a not guilty verdict after less than 10 minutes of deliberation."

Longo is a Tasmanian - I think we all know about the origins of European settlement there!

There's been a lot of covering up of his dodgy past in Australia - Longo incredibly was inducted into the Tasmanian sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

He also was selected to play for the Socceroos in the years after his sacking for attempted theft by Cercle Brugge.

I see the eye patch is firmly embedded.Further more it has been proven that there was contact.

I'm not debating the rights or wrongs of the simulation charge being heard - just the fact someone sacked by his club for allegedly stealing from it is on the disciplinary committee.

Longo was a laughing-stock in world football back in the 1990's and a by-word for a dishonest player in the history of professional football...

We have an academy side, we get no FFA funding for it

Another example of the FFA making a rod for their own backs.  WIthout them enforcing the replacement from youth team rules there is nothing to force the teams to focus on these sides.  Look at City who have won the national youth league but continue to bring in cover from outside the club.

The FFA continue to be a joke.

Good. As it should be. Would be a farce if it was held in Sydney if they didn't win the right to it. This isn't the NRL.

Do the franchises get any cut from gate takings from playoff games they are in or does it all still go to the FFA? I know there was talk that it had changed a while ago but then I seem to remember someone else saying it hadn't changed.
