AFC’s lease of Mt Smart expires in 2029 as well - so it’s good timing. The council get their money back in time. 

You do realise that the city actually do need another stadium for one day cricket and the mighty All Blacks don’t you? That’s the only reason it has to stay alive. 
That and if NZ is ever to host/co host a big event like the RWC, white ball Cricket World Cup or dare to dream FIFA Mens WC it needs at least one venue capable of hosting 40K plus. I think there has even been talk Aus/NZ may one day bid to host the Club World Cup.

And for sure re MartinB's point, a smaller more boutique oudoor music venue maybe what Ali William's & co plan for Western Springs around the football. But Auckland Council wouldn't be keen at all for major acts to be dragged away from EP - not unless the max 12 concerts per year quota is already filled.
