I'm a cricket purist, and I don't think I've ever watched a BBL game, but hey 20:20 brings in the dosh. Test cricket is a red ink enterprise in NZ.

NZ's infrastructure everywhere you look is aging. Wild weather events causing widespread destruction, and hugely expensive repair bills seem more common every year.

Councils and Govts looking for ideas to plug potentially growing infrastructure funding gaps, are really only doing their job. I have no real idea on the financial benefits of turning EP no 2 into a hotel etc. But I'm sure the bean counters have modelled it to death. Upgrading NZ's national stadium (EP 2.0), or even just keeping it in it's current state (capex) is going to require some serious dollars. In a country already struggling to provide more important services and projects, than sporting grounds.

If a chunk of that multi million dollar spend can be taken off the rate payers/tax payers, by selling/leasing the no 2 ground to the Hilton Group or whoever, maybe that's the right thing to do. Maybe.
