Wee Mac or Doyle? I do wonder why we haven't signed Doyle up already hence my Caira theory.

Well although he's not, I'm considering McGlinchey signed already. It seems that's how he and Merrick are playing it.

Shirt numbers 4 and 19 are free for Roly and one more. When you assume Doyle signs then we are at a squad of 23 which is the maximum.

Roly in Jersey #19 then? :P

Caira to be let go? Hopefully an A-League team needs a left back.

City, Victory, Sydney and Adelaide all need a LB. Adelaide have cap/roster space problems tho.

I didn't think Doyle was exceptional and a young fella sitting next to me who plays against him in Central League was surprised at all the fuss. Caira has been developing nicely.  While it's always nice to get more kiwis in the squad so we are developing NZ players I'd hope the 'Nix are also careful not to get a reputation for dumping Aussies, and making it harder to recruit from that pool.

Thats quite against the stream of thought on Doyle thus far.

No one is saying force him out but he left his WSW contract a season early in order to play first team with us. Last season he lost his place to Manny and ended up playing some minutes at DM. This pre-season Doyle has started every game and against Upper Hutt he had to play CB for some game time. Now Roly has signed and he reportedly can play fullback also, it makes you wonder how far down the pecking order he is now. His development seems stalled, so just suggesting that he might wish to look elsewhere again.

If he's played against him in Central League he should have a fair idea about how exceptional he has been for Miramar over the past two seasons. Since he came out of the FSE he has matured into an outstanding player at that level. He even captains Miramar now which is quite an achievement for a player of his age.

Also, Doyle plays CB for Miramar. If he can cut his teeth at fullback - which is far easier than CB - he could be a future CB for the Nix. Provided his development continues on the upward trend of course.

Doyle wasn't the second coming of Roberto Carlos; but in those 2 kickabouts he showed more than Caira has ever shown. Caira always looks nervous to me.

Most will have seen a change at Miramar when he has not been on the field, the last 2 games.

Not for preseason? A lot of trialists come and go at a lot of clubs so I would think preseason would be exempt and only count for competition games?

FFA Cup game so would need to be registered with club. Would be silly to transfer for one game though.

Would probably be disqualified for playing an unregistered player in the FFA Cup.

Oh right FFA Cup.

Mea culpa

That also means he has a 30 day stand down coming back as well right? You would have to sign him (well not have to but that unfair to the guy if you don't)

The thing that struck me about Doyle and it was not just the one match but both was that he did not look out of place or overawed to be playing with the Nix against The Hammers and Toon.

There is a difference between having a good work rate and running around like a headless chicken.

Congrats to Doyle. Like i've said a few times, looks a far better prospect than Caira and is a kiwi.

Work rate is not determined by how much you run. I realise most of you disagree with what i said, but i feel he'd be better off working on his positional game. Funnily enough no one criticized me for what he's not doing by charging down the keeper every few minutes...

I am not sure my comment is against the stream at all.  I was not saying he looked out of place.  I said he did not look exceptional.  And in my book he would have to look exceptional before you start breaking contracts to get him into the team.  Maybe exceptional if you are a Miramar fan and are commenting on how he is currently playing Central League and handled the step up exceptionally well.  Sure.  But imho it's a big call to say he looked an exceptional A League player.

I  also struggle to agree that he looked a dead cert upgrade on Caira.  I thought Caira had some pretty good games for us last year and was developing nicely.  And I was also pointing out you have the small issue of Caira (and BS) being on contract with us.

Ernie has already hinted that he's interested in Doyle for a contract.  What Ernie was more coy on was when that might happen.  My guess is they'll keep Doyle in the loop - perhaps, depending on the reserve team structure, he get's a gig with that - and he comes into play for a full contract when BS and Caira come off contract at the end of the season.  Maybe earlier if either BS or Caira was keen for a move back to Aus and some-one wanted to take over Nix's contractual obligations to them.

I'd have no problem with Doyle in the squad.  But we don't need Roly, Manny, Fenton, BS, Caira and another one, in Doyle, all taking squad space as FB or FB cover.  And toss Boxall into that list as well.  We don't need Doyle right now and I don't see him as exceptional enough to demand we sack someone we already have on contract.  Just the way I see it.

When you look over the roster, Caira does become expendable with having Fenton, Roly, Boxall, and Shermy at the back. Considering Shermy was just resigned, you would think Caira is the spare.....

If he wants that free roster spot, he would be the one I would target. Perhaps Lia as well (looking at who is behind the midfield lot) but Lia still has experience and use and also signed an extension.

Whether it is Caira or BS that's expendable is moot to me - I'll leave that to Ernie.  But we've now got a bit of a glut at FB.  Plus I've already said my opinion is that Doyle is not dead set better than Caira.  On playing time given I would have thought BS was the most vulnerable.  But they are both contracted till the end of this coming season and Lia till the end of the season after that.  You either have to convince your Board to pay out on one of those contracts to pick up Doyle, now, and incur that double cost, or you wait till the end of the season and weigh up which two you most want to have - Caira, BS or Doyle.

What I was not getting was the seeming enthusiasm for signing Doyle now, plus the seeming belief he was a clear better player than Caira to justify breaking Caira's contract.  Can't see it myself.

I still dont know why people are complaining about this. This is just the type of player he is and always has been, even when he was scoring a lot.
