2015/16 Transfer Speculation
I think spreading unfounded bs about someone should be bannable
However, nufc's story is pretty believable. Who wouldn't be happy about that kinda pay rise? Good on him.
a facepalm gif!
Watson would be an import for other clubs. Likewise we aren't rushing to sign Santalab or Joey whoever it was.
Do you think on the last game he should be paid less than Powell? Less than Lia? Than Fenton? Than Doyle?
For me he was one of the few things that made the game worth watching.
So you would base your salary payments on a twenty minute period. On that basis Powell would be on about 2m a year based on his WSW performance.
And surely the fact he is an import elsewhere gives us the club even more bargaining power
I always love the 'he did really well when he came on' argument. It's All White counterpart is we played really well in the last 20/30/2nd half, take your pick.
What such arguments tend to completely overlook is the state/context of the game - coming on for the last 20 minutes when the opposition has already won the game and are already thinking about next week and play-offs afterwards is a bit different to being able to make a difference when the game is there to be won or lost.
That is ignoring the fact that overall HW has played pretty well when he has started too.
Very debatable. There are at least two games I can think of where he looked like he didn't belong in Central League, let alone any higher.
Which is not say he won't be re-signed - just noting that there is tendency on this forum to follow a line of argument that relies on complete lack of context.

Except that wasn't my argument at all.
But more *yawn* forum authorities and straw men
It also holds much more water than he did sweet f all when he was on, must be great.
1- Watson wouldn't be looked at by other clubs, because he would be competing against the likes of Fornaroli and Berisha for a spot. That doesn't seem like much of an argument to try and screw down his salary to the absolute minimum allowable- I was comparing what he brings to Fenton, Lia, Doyle, Powell and Lia- using for sake of argument the most recent performance. Professional athletes give up other opportunities, have a short career and risk serious injury in their job.
2- Watson offered a lot more on the park on this and on other occasions, and he has caused defences trouble when he's been on across several games. Before the game has been won or lost.
If the game is totally f-ing miserable and few players are showing anything, I'm allowed to point out that one or two players did well and I enjoyed watching.
Not sure what is worse at the moment the forum or the team tbh.
Which, funnily enough, is the reason I didn't reply to your post, but Jeff's - it was a general observation, and a tendency of this forum that's pretty obvious to anyone who's spent any length of time here.
also, Powell only really had that one excellent game, which if he hadn't played, he would be surely on the outer.
Yeah. I'd say that in a serious play-off contender, there wouldn't be a place for both of them.
Damn, 31 new posts in the thread. I thought we had a legit rumour on a new signing
we've had 6 weeks of off season already and only 6 more months to go...
I'm not a massive Watson booster, but he has brought a lot more than I thought he would, and some points of difference.
Is he the closest we've ever had to the mythical Targetman?

Target man.... Rory

He may be not to bad and he did well in an underperforming team. But to win a title we need someone who bangs in goal regularly. More like a Krishna or Burns. No problem with Powell and Watson on the bench, but I want better players.
Similar to Doyle, he did not bad and had some good moments this season, we expected nothing. But he is far away from a eg. Craig Goodwin who scored 10 Goals in 52 game for Adelaide. I want a guy like him instead of Manny, Doyle, Fenton.
I don't understand why some people are happy with mediocre and hope they turn from ASB prem league into bad ass A-League goals scoring machines?
I know it's hard to get them, salary cap, Sarpong, bla bla. I think Finkler and Kosta is a step into the right direction, look what they did to us on the weekend? Maybe Kosta is ready to be an Alpha player? If get something similar in defence to replace Manny and Siggy we could have a (this time for real) good team next year.

Of course not, but he is competing with other players in the market. The idea that the foreigners should beer your best players isn't reality in a salary capped league. Gold coast and them us hired Alex Smith from a state league, Riera and Krishna came from the asb premiership, so it's not unheard of. He's shown he can score which is more than half the strikers in the league and he could be interesting to a team like ccm or the jets.
If I was Doyle or Ridenton I would be a little pissed if Watson is on 80k. Doubt either of them were on that much last year and even with new contracts I can't see them being higher
Target man.... Burning out his fuse up here alone
Cant believe all this talk following a NUFC bullsharke post
too slow.
He put his balls on it, thats good enough for me based on past experiences.
Huysegems might have been big and bald but he didn't play like a targeting. He's more of a technical player who liked the ball played to his feet rather than a big battering ram up front

Yeah but Goodwin has been playing in the a-league since 2011. He was mediocre as they come until recently, the same with many other players (Nichols is another player off the top of my head that was mediocre for years before developing into a decent player). I don't see any reason why Doyle couldn't get to that level with consistent game time. The nix can't just magically fix every position overnight, so you still have to take the time to develop 'mediocre' players in some positions, it's all about balance and depth. Other teams do it pretty well, all those A-league aussies don't just appear at the top of their game out of thin air.
I'm told that Doyle has played quite a bit of CB before the nix, is that right? He also played a bit in midfield for the weenix, and was captain a couple of times wasn't he? I feel he might have more of an all-round skillset than Goodwin, who to me is really a fantastic attacking wingback - Goodwin strikes me as the type who was probably once a winger/attacker but was moved backward.
Different style of player, despite being in similar positions.
Personally I have high hopes for Doyle. I feel he has the potential to be quite a high-quality starting A-League fullback for years to come.
i dont remember him being able to win a header till his second season

couldn't head a ball to save his life that's No target man
I don't think he saw himself as a target man anyway, just a striker
He was just a winger/striker who happened to be tall.

Now why didn't we think of this before Moosecat decided to leave??

O'Donovan thought to target Manny Iirc
So rumour has it, and take this with a grain of salt as it's like third hand chats from someone who was apparently at a Huawei dinner/lunch, that we've signed Victory right back.
I'm guessing Georgievski. Gees of its true they really are our feeder club!
He'll take up a foreing spot won't he?

Goodwin is what we hoped Fenton might be under Ernie's "repositioning" plan.
Georgievski is signed for 2017 I think
I believe Dylan Murnane is off-contract at season's end?

Georgievski would be an excellent signing if true.
As previously mentioned, more likley to be Dylan Murnane. Off contract.
Galloway has a year to run on his contract (also it's his birthday today according to transfermarkt)
True, Murnane joining would explain why we are letting Danoskos go. Would add depth to the squad at least. I haven't seen enough of him to really know how he compares to Doyle
Call me pedantic but for me the right FB is the most pressing problem together with an experienced CB to pair up with Fox.
Not sure what we would do if Dura picks up an injury (unless Doyle is expected to slot in then, with another left FB to be his backup instead, as per above "Murnane murmurs").
