Joel Griffiths is a Free Agent...
NAMES! All else is level of worry speculation.
Robinho
We haven't actually signed anyone yet - Blake what's his name aside.
My concern remains our ability to recruit young, ambitious talent when we may have no license beyond 15/16. The lack of a license extension won't stop us recruiting a veteran looking for a last season pay cheque but younger players looking to build a career will want more security.
I guess it comes down to where the license extension negotiations sit with the FFA e.g. if they have committed, in writing, to a 5 year extension and agreed to continue to talk about a longer term them the license situation won't be an impediment to recruitment.
My feeling however is the Nix and FFA have got in to a game of chicken over the license extension.

But we are mainly looking for players playing in Europe. The European season has already begun or will begin in the next few weeks. There won't be that many options out there anymore should a signing fall through. I'm assuming that we are looking for free agents. I highly doubt we would pay a transfer fee.
Mystery chap is European based.

Well young kiwi's don't have a lot of choice.
Powell would have had options other than us as well and signed here.

Didn't Mike Greene just sign for the Greeks? Could be him...

It sounds like we received money for Burns. That, coupled with the salary cap room freed up by Brockie, Boxall, JBS, Hicks, Boyd, Cunningham, you'd think if we ever had cash to spend it'd be now, and getting a quality striker has to be a very high priority...

"Since losing Nathan Burns to FC Tokyo, the Phoenix have been in negotiations with numerous, but off-field concerns and financial demands have broken down deals".
Off-field concerns = there's no way I'm signing for a club that's playing its last season.
The FFA and Nix owners need to get this sorted - months ago.
Could also be a loan. Who knows.
Roly's mate recently bought out his contract at NAC Breda.. On trial at Blackburn though.
For the record, last year in the A-League season 14 transfers were made to A-League clubs in June, 16 in July, 8 in August, 8 in September and 5 in October. So it seems that teams can leave it late and still sign some big players. Pablo Sanchez signed on 15 August, FBK on 19 September and Georgievski on 11 September.

I suppose I feel that the money we would spend on a transfer fee would be better spent going towards the salary of a marquee player.
Not many A-League clubs pay transfer fees; not even MV, who turn a profit.
anyone got some chloroform, sodium pentothal, a record needle and an ernie merrick lieing around in the basement?
Someone from the 'Nix has been reading the forum and just making up some goss, keep things ticking over for us.
:P

Given that people are being advised of a press conference next week it's an elaborate ruse...

And I'm not saying that they should. Don't you think if they aren't going to sign a big marquee that they also aren't going to fork out for a transfer fee? Have we ever paid a transfer fee?

I am not the one in a panic suggesting they throw cash all over the place. Remember... Roly came to us pretty late.
Have faith
The day we pay a transfer fee for a player is the day we are averaging 17k crouds and have won the league.
Not going to happen in the short term.
Why not foster relationships with some club like Tokyo who we just dealt with a arrange loan deals for top notch youngsters who are a season away from starting in Jleague firsts at top clubs. Some of these youngers get loaned out to J2 and score 10-12 goals a season.

Because there is better money in J2 than HAL?

Yes, but it may be that we need to pay a transfer fee for a decent marquee in order to average 17k 12k and win the league.
Let's not confuse cause with effect.
With regards to the transfer fee, any fee paid goes towards the salary cap doesn't it? I remember this being a possible stumbling block to the Phoenix having to pay the "compensation" suggested by the mediator in the Wee Mac saga. Indeed, I can't recall any A-League side paying a transfer fee, though I wouldn't be surprised if fees have been paid as paid of loan deals.

Yip and if you have read my posts in this thread you will struggle to find an example of where I am in a panic or suggesting that they throw cash all over the place. Saying "let's not pay a transfer fee" does clearly not equal full blown panic.
Roly was signed on 25 July. If you look back at my post on the last page once again you will see that I listed several big name A-League players who were signed in September last season.

But what do we offer Tokyo? If we want to loan their players we are going to have to pay for them.
i don't know why many think you need to pay a transfer fee for a player on loan. Sure if you are a gun like a Falcao but it is the exception rather then the rule.
Sure you are likely to pay the players wages but that is understandable.
What would Tokyo get out of it? A young player getting match time in a league probably at a higher quality then their second division

Football Manager.
And it is something that happens in Europe at least, particularly if the player isn't completely out of first-team contention.

First team football for their up & coming 1st teamer.

Guest stints and marquee spots are for the Villa situation.
