Big fish in a small pond. He should have headed over to the VPL 5 years ago. Instead he went on TV and played 14 games a season.

not sure how that's overly relevant - he is clearly one of the best if not the best midfielder in the ASBP and he still can't get a look in.

The only thing I can think of is that he is just in a position that the Nix are not looking for.

maybe he doesn't want to put the work in to be pro? Happy to have the profile for his tv career and keep it as a hobie? He had a look in at the nix under Ricki and played a season in aus iirc but did he want it bad enough? Should have relocated to Wellington to play for the TeeDubs and been closer to the nix, or tried his hand overseas.

Can't have too much depth.

Well you can when you have limited squad sizes and limited funds. That's why utility players are good for the squad, having a player of speed who can come on and turn a game is a different thing though.

Like Hoggy? Tried, failed, came back with tail between, end of career.

We'll he's in the same position as Clapham, sans local TV career, i.e. he plays in the top flight of NZ football.

If Clapham was even halfway serious he would have been playing in Wellington so that he could be in the mix with the Phoenix, Auckland for the club world cup, or overseas. I can only conclude that he doesn't/didn't want it.

Of course I don't know him. And there are doubtless people on here who know him well, so they can feel free to correct me.

Um, if by "he" you mean Ian Hogg, I don't think he's played top flight football for months. From what I gather his failed attempt at the big time has backfired on him bigtime. Not saying same would happen with Clapham, but maybe with age he's grown wary of chucking away what he's got.

Re: suggestion that Clapham not going to TW = lacking ambition

Maybe he actually enjoys representing his local team in the ASBP? I know that seems ridiculously outlandish... but maybe players do exist who would rather stick with their home club than moving to another in the same competition?

Ignore me, I'm talking crazy

Exactly - he would prefer to play in Christchurch, be with his family, etc. than move to pursue a pro career. He did his stint in the US university system and then a couple of months in Australia, and might have thought - you know what? This is good enough.

Nothing wrong with that, and that would explain why he never got the pro gig, he might not have wanted it, or the sacrifice meant it wasn't worth it.

No you are not Paul. The Phoenix have signed a number of ASB Prem players or had them involved and  not many of them got there by playing in Wellington rather than for any other ASB Prem side.

See from the games I watched of him on T.V I tend to disagree with this statement. Although I did not see all of his games. I thought someone like Andre de Jong stood out more

PS btw Aaron Clapham is now 29 yrs old.

de Jong has had a hell of a season. Lots of knockers in the Mainland forum prior to him going down to CHR and I think only really Chopah and myself defended him.

He is older and the points made about wanting to stay in CHR and big fish in small pond are all fair. Still, he is head and shoulders above pretty much 99% of other midfielders in the comp and he is not a hatchet man either so wont cost you silly fouls. The problem you have is that when you take into account his age and say the age of Rufer, McGarry, Ridenton and perhaps Fenton, they may not be as good today but they have a lot more upside to develop.

Hogg is a funny one. I have my suspicions on what happened there but its all speculation without facts.

Whether rightly or wrongly, that boat has sailed, unless we badly need injury replacements.

With all the excitement of Costa/Kosta signing, the departure of Manny Muscat feels less painful.

I thought of the following chant for our first game against Melbourne City next season:

"Manny Manny Manny,

Must be funny

In the rich mens' world"

The the tune of the ABBA classic hit.

But the lenth of time we have signed Kosta for is still shorter than when we will see strings for the licence.

Good point. I wonder how the re-signing of the players at the end of our first 3 years of the 3+2+2=10 deal will be affected.

I was only commenting on the validity of the licence extension being good news in the last few months, Kosta coming back being one of two great pieces of news.

is pie mans brother on the way here, before the game v adelaide he had a good chinwag with russell the kit man as the players came out to warm up and then got a double pat on the back as he walked off, then  he was having a good look around the stadium as he went down the tunnel at half time then ernie in the press commented what a good player he was. pure speculation by me

As kind of covered in the Contracted players thread, we need to form a front line of KGB. We have Krishna and Barbarouses. So come on down Danny Graham...
