There is a bigger issue here at play though, is that not enough good referees are coming through the system in Australia and NZ to referee at an elite level..”
Kris Griffiths-Jones’ revelation that football loses 1,000 referees a year in Australia due to abuse — via the Fox Sports Football Podcast — should be the biggest talking point in the sport this week”. Until we stop referee abuse in grassroots level of the game, educate parents and fans around this, offer more genuine support to young referees we will not have the refereeing depth we all desire and deserve and questionable decisions will continue to happen, until then we are stuck with Kearsey, King, Elder and Abraham.. in terms of the aggressive nature of the game, A League is very timid compared to leagues in Asia, Africa and Americas. I watch the quite a few similar level leagues to A league including the Uruguay Primera, Liga MX and the Irani League, and while there are some grubs in a league, it’s absolutely nothing compared to those leagues, where there is a player in each team whose job it is to hurt the best opponent players.. and teams will often use cynical fouls to gain an advantage, I asked Eze post game in Gosford what he thinks of the physical side of the game in A league and he said they focus more on the technical aspect of the game then Iraq, where the aim of the game is to kick the opponent as hard as you can to gain advantage

Is it just me or was the Steele/Ishige incident that resulted in his injury one of the most innocuous of fouls in that game? Haven't gone back and watched the replay or anything but it seemed more like an awkward coming together than anything else.

Mate, it is a discussion about the character and quality of the A League more than comment on that single incident.

If the A League wants to improve its ratings and crowd and TV sizes then there is an argument that the refs need to manage the thuggery and let quality players play.

I can watch rugby and rugby league on a different show.

In actual fact, FFA has clarified that the national number is closer to 3,500 per year.
