Are the new forums deterring new participants?

The very long off season, the Backbencher catching fire and the problems with the roll out of the new forums. I would suggest they all have played some part in Yellow Fever things being less active than in the past.

So it's not all my fault?

Onwards and upwards from here. I liked the old forum, and while the transition to this one put a lot of people off, and i do miss a few features of the old one (search and PM), this is now a quality forum (thanks welnik)

Agreed. And the problems with the change in forums might have seen quite a few people leave and the numbers of active users drop, but if those people don't come back I wouldn't expect a whole lot of newbies coming in. Basically because there's a limited number of people in NZ who would be interested in using these forums and they're mostly already here, or were here previously but drifted away, or just don't want to engage with it for whatever reason. No reflection on the quality of the forums themselves either in terms of content or design and layout!

I also wonder if  the conversations have got a little stale here because frankly the Nix have got a little stale - which is a factor in dwindling crowds at the games too I suspect. Ricki has had the same core group of players playing the same sort of game and getting the same sort of results for years and there's only so much that can be said about it, so people  who aren't necessarily regulars don't bother engaging with it. At the same time, because these discussions have happened over and over again they have tended to get a little more vitriolic.

Finally, I think at some level this is just what any community becomes - a core group that drives discussions and develops in-jokes or memes, and/or patterns of behaviour, which can be a little hard to penetrate for outsiders at times. It happens everywhere: schools, workplaces, sports clubs, but especially in internet communities where all the conversation is entirely text-based, on a relatively narrow subject area. If people have a problem with that at some level it's just too bad, because that's the way this sort of thing goes. It's always going to be kinda awkward trying to join an established social group in any way, but I think that's actually quite minimal on this site relative to a lot of other situations people experience on the internet and in life in general. And having a much larger internet community doesn't encourage greater range of ideas or opinions really either, it just degenerates to the lowest common denominator pretty damn quickly. Youtube comments sections are the ultimate example of this. Compared to a lot of other places on the web - even comments sections under football articles on news sites - the YF site is a shining beacon of civilisation and cerebral, rational discussion.

I enjoy the forums, including the little spats and massive segues which make me chuckle sometimes, and I think everyone involved should be happy with what we have here. Sure we can work to improve it together where we can, but it's still pretty damn good for now! Especially considering it's run by volunteers on a shoestring budget :)

I struggled to come back here after the forums changed. I tried my best to stay with it but the lack of email updates about replies made my interest levels drop. I found it bothersome having to come here and look through the forums and try to remember which ones I was involved in or keeping an eye on. The improvements over time have helped though but I still probably only come here about half as much as I used to. The one thing I thought this website always needed was a live chat during games so you don't have to keep hitting refresh and scrolling down (more for us out of towners who don't get to travel into Wellywood very much.)

Fings I like about the YF Forum:

1. Usually the first place to find out about latest happenings in the Nix.

2. Lots of good, argued opinions/positions on tactics, coaching, ownership, footy in general.

3. Very few self-righteous c*nts (I might be exception here).

4. Some rather clever posters on the forum (exhibit A: BZ above).

5. Never short of LOLS.

Fings that are different about this season:

1. A lot more angst

2. No emoticons or grass background

Mind you, I lurk on a few other footy fora and the vibes are equally "more negative" and stale than previously.

We've had a pretty financially tough 2012 in the Jnr82 household and it's hard to get motivated about the Nix this season, but what the heck - I will be off to get my YF Ifill T Shirt later this week when I am back at work.

1 thing I wouldn't mind changed is most recent replied to  thread moves to top. I know it shows how many new replies since thread last checked. But sometimes you have to scroll for a year and a half to find the right thread last lol

But most people are stupid. Why would that be a turn-off? Look at the most popular sites in the world - not exactly catering for the erudite few. Surely this constant disdain for the "stupid" is worse for the popularity of the site.

You can do a site search via google and find most things, the trouble is working out how to correct the link to the new forums set up.

Does anyone wish that Wynrs was back? Or maybe he is but I don't know it. My personal Wynrs highlight was when he had the last post on all of the topics on the main forum page. Those were good times...

I think it is a combo: It was very difficult during the forum changeover, we had a long offseason with not much happening, there could be some better moderation. I don't mind wildly different standpoints on here and the occassional stupid but dont like the personal abuse which has crept in. Like the humour as usual, in jokes or not

The visuals of the site are a real improvement. The lack of being able to PM someone is one of the things I miss. Voting  for POTM is another.

I haven't been posting many of my concise, intelligent, witty insights for a while because life gets in the way. The change on the forum layout did cause me to disappear from the forum for a while, simply because I couldn't log in from work any more. Now I'm starting to log in a bit more often, the new set up dosn't bug me quite as much as it did.

As for the angst on here? There's always been angst, and stupid, and abuse, and derailing threads, and in-jokes. That's what it makes it fun!

I did like the grass on the old forum though.....

Are Jag and I the only posters to have had a thread closed down due to derailing it (and inadvertantly spawning the Jesus Wept meme)?
