When it comes to the Olympics you clearly have a case of the happyted's ("bah, humbug, Olympics, bah") so yeah - agree to disagree.

Yeah, well HappyTed's been silent for a while now, so I thought I'd take up the grumpy ogre role for a day or two.

And if it was England ?I love the Phoenix, but I'm an All Whites fan first...

England to win the World Cup or Swindon to win the Premiership? Easy, England to win the WC.

England to win the Olympics (I know, I know they don't enter the Olympics) or Swindon to win the League 2 Playoffs? Easy, Swindon every time. In the footballing world the Olympics are meaningless. The WC is the only meaningful global international tourny.

My thoughts exactly DLB - just swap England for Croatia and Swindon for Dinamo.

Country. Although, its 1000x easier for me, given none of the Phoenix are going to play for the Socceroos or the Olyroos (we called them that way before you...) in a hurry.

I don't buy this "it's only the olympics, they're meaningless" crap either. I'd much rather see the Olyroos win a medal than Wellington win the A-League. I'm suprised more of you don't feel the same way (about New Zealand though, obviously).

Anyway, to come back to the OP, I'd rather see Smeltz over in Beijing representing his country and have us get hammered for a few games. We played Sydney last year without ANY all whites and did fairly well considering.

i've always said country, but that was before the phoenix (Hull City not having had a hell of a lot of current England internationals )

but the olympics is a huge shop window for our sport in this country, people who wouldn't switch on a Phoenix game might well watch an olympic match (I can't see the club standing in their way - if selected)

I'm utterly flummoxed by this one , i'd be gutted if we lost 1-0 in our first A-league match and Smeltz and  Costa had grabbed 1 each v Belgium and didn't make the A-league opener

but if we don't make the quarters (not a completely shocking outcome) the last OlyW's match will be v belg on the 13th and they could probably make it back in time for the game on the 17th

Your not the only A-League team with players at the Olympics. Badge of honour to play for your country ......... and go to the Olympics ............ IMO no club anywhere should stand in a players way or even put pressure on them. Only happens for two weeks every four years.

Socceroo/ Mariner / Whangarei

sh*t the all whites are much more important than the phoneix, ask any of the players.  A sh*t load more people will watch the oly whites than will watch the phoneix play, too start with (one billon in china).  Players could get great contracts overseas, I dont know about yourselfs, but I would rather see Smeltz play for colonge or man utd than the sh*t phoneix.  and A sh*t load of class players have been signed playing at the olympics, Ronaldinho and Tevez to start with, check at fifa.com at the olympics to check this out. It is the biggest sport at the olympics, Bar f**king none. check at the amazing stadiums they are going to play at, fifa.com.  Brazil are fielding their best team possible and argentina have  named a squad of 56. Its huge all you bitches, just because f**king england dont compete, doesnt mean it anit meaniful.

I agree, very well put Shane.

All these motherf*ckers putting club before country are unpatriotic and should f*ck off and join the Foreign Legion. Did the ANZACs die for nothing? Did they?

And another thing. Football is huge. The Olympics is huge. So football at the Olympics is motherf*cking huge. Oh yes.

Im sure the ANZACS didnt die to allow the Olympics to be held in a country with a terrible human rights record and a country that is having the biggest negative environmental impact on the planet.  China is currently supplying arms to a regime thats displaced millions and killed hundreds of thousands in Darfur.

In my opinion boycotting the Olympics is the only option.

In New Zealand it's hard to get as excited about your country more than your club (well... Phoenix), as New Zealand aren't in that much exciting competition. It's just unlucky geography in that regard.Though any player who ever puts club before country is forever scum.

Regarding the boycotting the Olympics. Where the hell are we going to hold it if we can't do it in any country who arms murderous regimes, or who breaks human rights??? And surely holding it there has raised the issue of things like Tibet. Human rights have been broken there for a long time without as much international pressure against China as there are now.

Oh no, you've gone and turned this into a debate about boycotting the Olympics now! And in a different font, are you nuts? If the mods find out about this we'll be banished to "Off Topic" before you know it.

I seem to remember plenty of people quite happy to bang the "keep politics out of sport" drum when it came to the NZ Govt denying the Fijian keeper a visa. Anyone wanting to expose themselves as a hypocrite now feel free.

Me, I'm quite happy to keep the debate on club versus country and whether missing a handful of players at the start of the season is bad for the Phoenix. What if the same players happened to be injured in pre-season? sh*t happens, deal with it. If having a few players away at the Olympics for a few weeks derails our season then we don't deserve to make the play-offs anyway.

Jeepers! Really?

It must have been the choice of font that made me think he was serious. Everyone knows that Times New Roman is the least ironic of all fonts.

Just for the record I am deadly f*cking serious about the ANZACS. My great-grandfather Jim Bob died at Gallipoli and according to his best mate Fruitbat his dying words were "at least I die knowing that thanks to my selfless sacrifice future generations of Kiwi professional footballers will cherish the ideals of the Olympic Games and never put club before country. Even if FIFA and the IOC should come to a future agreement over player participation that appears to dilute the importance of the tournament". He then asked Fruitbat to keep his hands off my grandmother (a promise that Fruitbat was later unable to keep) and passed away on the beach, as well as over in the paddock where his legs were.

Actually, that would be Palation Linotype. Only wannabes use Times New Roman when trying to be ironic/sarcastic.
