i reckon the whole fox team are pretty damn good.

i frikkin hate robbie slater because he is a pig-headed moron, but i still don't think he's bad at his job

i cannot watch anything on ESPN.  they turn a game into a talk show and are self indulgent

I don't mind Janusz Michallik (sp?) - he usually seems to have insightful comments on the games but I don't think he does many any more. Shaka Hislop is alright too IMO.

Yeah I like Zelic as well, he may say random crap but at least he's enthusiastic and entertaining.  You wouldn't want him to be the main commentator who has to fill in silences, etc. But as the second guy who adds colour he works well.

While living in Sydney in 1991 I watched on telly the goal he scored for Australian Olyroos against Holland in Utrecht, with 2 min to go.

In fact he scored both goals for Australia. As a result Olyroos went to Barcelona Olympics at Holland's expense.

I have a soft spot for him just for that entertaining goal, whether it was bad goalkeeping or not.

Wow! Last goal, what and angle! Respect!

Maybe, but I personally think that English football style simply did not suit him.

He played excellent football in continental Europe for over 10 years, from Borussia through Auxerre to 1860 Munich. They were all top league teams.

And one thing in his favour - he was never a dickhead.

Really interesting how many of those aussie guys succeeded in the 90s without any kind of professional set-up back home.  All of the academies etc haven't really helped them.  Aussie really have gone backwards in the last 10 years - there were Aussies in all of the main leagues, basically none left now.  I mean Cahill is still the start turn

They won the Asian Cup.

A team from their domestic league has won the Asian Champions League.

The prominence of players in Europe, that you refer to, possibly stem, in part, from the sons of immigrants post war?

Anyone who remembers Harry Kewell and Mark Viduka tearing up the turf for Leeds in those days can only weep today at the relative lack of quality Aussies there (in Europe) today.

Interestingly, there were those like Harry and - a decade before him - Craig Johnston, who parents did not come from the Continent. And you  can add to that list good old Scott Chipperfield, the best player of all Wollongong bus drivers, who did not have a good run at Bolton Wanderers, and moved to Switzerland where he had a stellar run over 10 years with Basel FC.

It is not about hating him it is about getting a competent commentator. This is after all a pretty difficult job and certainly one I would not care to do. He needs to do a lot more research on the teams and the players and have a couple of sheets in front of him so making it a lot easier for himself.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I thought it was all within the topic, and a natural segue if you will:  Dewhurst - Ngata - Zelic - Chipperfield.

We could go on for hours.

now their best player plays his club football in china, and is samoan, not australian ;-)

Dewhurst sux and... top euro leagues attract far more south americans and africans (both these regions have some access to EU passports through colonial ties) than when Aussie 'golden generation' were all over europe.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

It's fair to say the golden generation aged already after the WC 2006, when Viduka hang up his boots. There was no immediate succession yet, and maybe only now there are signs of the odd players being good if not great - but Europe is now full of players from other countries.

Oh, and how about that Dewhurst. Dreadful commentator, etc.

I was talking to Dewhurst after our first ever A League game, when we had come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Victory. Brownlee had hit the post in the last minute, and everyone was buzzing.......except Dewhurst. He was so miserable going on about how poorly we played. I remember thinking that if he could not get excited by that, there was very little hope for him.

Oh, um.....Viducka, Kewell, players, Scott Chippendale, golden generation, Iran, Travolta in the changing rooms, Grant Turner's header from the edge of the box, etc

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

If Stephen McIvor can pretend to be a sports commentator/presenter and hold down that job at Sky then any fudgewit can survive in NZ as a commentator/presenter. If more evidence is required then I call...Mark Richardson...I rest my case

Grant Nisbett is so biased towards the ABs you would think no AB has ever thrown a punch, cheated or behaved badly - ever! However, the opposition are always dirty and cheating.

Grant Fox has a bland monotoned voice that rivals de Jong.
