As for children in the zone, I wouldn't encourage it . There is a family area set aside for that purpose.

I started in the zone at 13ish and my uncle occasionally brings my five and nine year old cousins in...it's not really a problem so long as you know what you're getting yourself or your kids into the odd swear word here and there.
