The draw came out first.

Right, so when you purchased season tickets at the same price as last year, you understood that you'd see just as many games unless you were willing to travel at your own expense. There was also a hidden agenda in my question though as next year I'm purchasing 2 season tickets and flying myself and my partner to Welly every home game. (Assuming every home game is in Welly )

for me it is about loyalty

I am loyal to the club and this season they have not rewarded my loyalty

i think Tony P needs to think about just who he is rewarding

like SiNZ says (roughly) being a fan is about the joy of watching your team in the wind and the rain, it's about arranging work travel and holidays so as not to miss games

if i can arrange my weekends and hols around the nix perhaps the can arrange the fixtures to work around Westpac glitches not take opportunistic advantage of such glitches

it's about loyalty

show us some back Tony

--

the only thing that would change my view is if Terry S needs the money to retain his interest in the club (the risk with this is that a short term $ gain might cost points and Wellington fan loyalty)

I doubt that the players wanted to let down the fans who freeze in the last 10 mins, sing themselves hoarse and stay after the game to sing them off, win, lose or draw

It's like I said before:
[QUOTE=SiNZ]
Why would we want to relegate supporting the Phoenix to the same status as going to the cinema i.e. only get upset if you lose access to a game you paid for? Supporting the Nix and signing-up as a member is not like that. It's more like a marriage with expectations of fidelity.

Exactly right. If you want us to be the kind of fans we want to be - who will be there even when we're struggling and playing unnattractive football - then it has to be a two way relationship. If you just want us to be consumers, well, that ain't the relationship between a football club and its fans. And it doesn't promote the "there in all weathers" approach, both literal and figurative, that a club needs in a fan base.

Or you could move to Wgtn (admittedly not too many dairy famers in wgtn compared with halswell, but we have plenty of dairys and some farmers dept stores)

Well the club claimed we were getting two games 'free' minus travel costs of course. It's absolutely excellent you're such an avid fan but I'm sorry mate you live in Christchurch the Phoenix are from Wellington and that is where they should play. I remember when they were deciding the name back in the early days of the club they wanted it to have a local identity hence ditching the NZK formula. I really hope we don't see a change in this stance Tony + Terry.

We are the Wellington Phoenix, and I don't think anybody has any ideas of changing that fact. We are also the only New Zealand club in the A-League, so we do have supporters across the country. If we have 1 or 2 home games in other parts of the country that draw big crowds, and we still do well, then that is good for New Zealand Football and the Wellington Phoenix. The club obviously loses a lot of money each year, but having the odd (no more than 1 or 2) game in another city in front of big crowds will help that. May even help us have the resources to sign the odd better player (marquee?).

The rules of what we do here are obviously different from other countries. I think it's simplistic to just stick to a doctrine saying Wellington team so every home game has to be in Wellington. Just like it's simplistic for those who say it's an Aussie league, so there shouldn't be New Zealand teams. I would have liked to have gone to that game, but am also happy that we will have created a bunch of new supporters down south. If we play in Christchurch next year, I'll think about going.

I've said in another thread that I think CHCH probably deserves a go next year- but that doesn't automatically mean AK should get a go. Palmy wasn't exactly a success (settle auskiwi) so I'm not entirely convinced about the home away games.

These are two good points I was trying to get at, but possibly overplayed. I understand the die-hard football supporters being annoyed at the prospect of missing any home games - as the OP stated, as long as they aren't end of season do or die fixtures is it worth the agnst to worry about the odd home game away from home?

Maybe once the Nix are making money, are attracting 12k+ to each RoF game and have secured a 10 year licence, then maybe, you'll have a better reason to whinge. But as it stands, playing a game outside of wellington, in front of almost 20k fans is a win for the club if you bother to look at the bigger picture (for example: more exposure = more fans travelling to wellington, 20k worth of gate takings is nothing to be sneezed at).

+1 (from another out-of-towner).
Don't make it to every home (ROF) game but every single one that I have attended has been a great experience. Pre-match
(Bbencher, walk to the stadium, the ROF itself = fantastic!
Play them all there.

If the club is in such a desperate state financially, how can one or two games outside Wellington possibly make a significant difference? If the club really needs to take games away from home to remain financially viable, then we're stuffed.

Im with you two on this,we season ticket holders have not been well treated by the club this year. What with just a voucher and nothing else for our membership(but thats a whole different thread). This talk of even more games away is certainly not a way i would attempt to drum up memberships for next season.

Would this thread be the same if it was the first home game of the season?

And J82 I do believe there are dairy farms in the greater wellington region. I'd clearly be a lot happier driving an hour into Wellington than flying up for home games

You might need to quote the threat, so we know what the threat is? Or did I miss something and someone deleted a post?

Selfish and jealous you have to be having a laugh.Yep i realise the reasons why they had to move the games away. But i still dont understand why more work isnt put into to trying to build up what is your HOME ground crowd.Marketing last couple of seasons has been very poor, maybe if some decent effort was put in the crowds may improve.

Seems many think we should be taking games away.I dont. Im a warriors fan but if i want to watch them i need to go to Auckland.Yep they have played here but that was because of the opposition.

Maybe those Aussie commentators are right and it should be NZ Phoenix.

The NZK shouldn't be counted as research for anything. At all, they would have got as many, if not less, in every other city in the country.

The Beckham game one could count perhaps, except that the game was meant to be a novelty, however those who would have gone from around the country had already been to the match in Wellington and so decided not to travel to Auckland.

I think the Kingz and Knights both getting 12-14k for there first games in a location which is perceived (weather it is actually out of the way is a different topic) to be out of the way for much of the city suggests that Auckland has just as much chance of succeeding as anywhere else in the country.

However I also think the whole Idea of taking games out of Wellington is absolute Bull sh*t. If out-of-towners want to get to games they can do either of 2 things, get on a bus/plane/car or move to Wellington.

Oh you mean Carterton? Yeah I suppose that qualifies for "greater" Wgtn (bit more than an hours drive and sort of an oxymoron to say that Carterton is greater Wgtn).

If you went Wairarapa way you'd be one of the few ratepayers there that wouldn't mind about the RoF.

Yes,id still be angsting over it regardless of what game in the season it was. And no im not just jealous at the 20k crowd. All home games should be in wellington, and the way the wellington fans have been treated over this is just damn poor to be honest.

Something i don't understand and it might be more complicated than it seems but, when the fixture planning comes around, and the stadium say to the nix which weekends they can play at the stadium and which weekends they cant. why they didn't arrange for an away fixture for that weekend.
we played 2 away fixtures in a row, prior to the "home" match in CH CH. surely it wouldn't have been that difficult to shuffle it to fit better, same with the turf being relayed when we went to Palmy. should of just had a away game that weekend. I can only think that thier was a financial opportunity for the Nix to schedule the games in CH CH/Palmy.
AMI stadium maybe wanted to test itself with a large event before the S14 and didn't charge the Nix for the facilities ?bundles of cash injected in merchandise and ticket sales, too good an offer to turn down?

All I'm saying is if they wanted all the home matches to be in the ROF it shouldn't have been to difficult to organise. i mean they played nix games the day after NPC and test match's. it cant be that shambolic to organise?

1. With three rounds remaining and the Nix on the verge of the playoffs for the first time, would this game have been better played in Adelaide in front of a few thousand Adelaide fans or in Christchurch in front of 20,000 odd Phoenix fans...

2. After thinking about this situation this morning (you get plenty of time to think whilst milking cows believe me), I must actually agree with what you Wellington guys are saying. The Wellington Phoenix should really make more of an effort to play at home, it's easier on the players and better for the season ticket holders. At Halswell we often have to play home games at Hornbys ground due to The Nest being full, and it does make it feel like an away match, even if you do have the majority of support on the sideline.

If you go back and read the original post Dairyflat was asking what rules should be in place regarding taking home games away. Carried with that is the assumption it will happen. The thread has developed into a bit of a Chch yes or no thing but that wasn't the original question.

What got us over the line was some excellent keeping from Reddy and piss poor finishing from Adelaide, no matter what spin Tony P puts on it.

But I digress.

Exactly. They could have even simply switched the round we were away at adelaide, with our home round on the 30th. So so simple, and not even a problem.

I can understand the 5 weeks the pitch was being relayed, going 5 weeks without a home game is a bit much to ask for in terms of scheduling. But for a one off event,it is EASY. So yeah,I do think there was a little wee lie when they said "it was forced on us".  Especially given the later change of tune on the topic, and all the recent comments from Tony P,it looks like theyre looking at making it a regular thing. NOT happy.

I also note the avoidance of such threads by him,but hes always keen to jump right on other threads. (more of a statement to challenge a response than anything that is)

My understanding of the turf being relayed is that it took out the stadium for more than a weekend or two. I could be wrong though, i'm sure TopLeft could correct me if I was wrong if he sees this.
