At least he has some pace, not sure how fit he is?  I'd get him on, Lia is abysmal.

I find it hard to blame that goal on a touch down the other end of the pitch

Whose poor control led to the quick counter attack?  We had committed players forward and were in decent position, Ifill miscontrolled, lost the ball, and 10 seconds later it is 1-0.  Granted, I have no idea where Lia was, however Ifill's mistake was a major factor there.

Manny needs to take these chances in a game like this I'm afraid.

Youre forgetting there shouldve been about 3-4 players between Ifill and our goal - when there werent. No reason we shouldve had as many pressed as high as we did.

Forget the 'should haves' and 'ifs' and 'buts'...Ifill lost the ball, they immediately ran up the park and scored.  He has to take some responsibility for it.  He is not solely responsible, but he was the start of the problem.

I blame the kick off. If the toss went the other way the last 45 minutes would have been different

I still disagree. Losing the ball 9 yards from goal is one thing, 90m is another. Half the squad were out of position

This.  But you'll annoy Steve-O with this kind of logic.
We are also pushing up a lot so Heart can make very quick turnovers into an empty midfield.

Bring on Boyd upfront, drop Biss back a bit deeper, and drop Manny to right back? Can't be as bad as an unfit Lia or Downey?

Hence the importance of not giving it away needlessly like Ifill did.

First half summary:

Spoonley has stood up well. While he has been the busiest, he probably looks the best player for us. (as busy keepers always do when they are under pressure)

Rowe has talent but the game looks to be about a yard faster than him. Unfortunate for his debut. He is running the over lap but consistently gets ignored.

Lia/Ifill: Hang your head in shame for your performance thus far.

Fenton: Trying to do a little too much when he has the ball.

Biss: Has run about but not doing a lot because we have no ball. Would probably help him to focus on standing nearer an opponent when they have the ball.

Muscat: Only player really standing up.

Stein: What can he do when we have no ball.

Durante and Boxall are doing what they can.

Smith: I would like to see him bring others into the game rather than play long all the time.

Its not awful but I would like to see that Lia/Muscat positional switch. At least stop us leaking down their left. Its inherently obvious.

Young ones are actually looking ok, however Rowe is starting to get exposed a bit down his side.  Sadly the senior players are not stepping up at all and Lia, Smith and Ifill have been poor.  Huysegems has been anonymous, and even Muscat hasn't been his usual self.

Young ones have done OK. Muscat and Ifill giving the ball away. !-0 and we are still in the game. The chances Hearts have had the game could have been well gone. We sure are lacking pace all over the park.

Fenton is a class act.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I'm not sure how he keeps conning Ricki into playing him every year.

I think we've played all right.

I am concered that we're struggling with their balls through the middle - see Spoonley's great save on Fred who was away 1 v 1...

Also, bad decision making is affecting our performance: Ifill, Fenton, Manny, Smith..they all gave away a ball or two by turning into the defender instead of offloading the bloody thing.

Rowe having a good game - you can see he's nervous. Really hope he keeps it up and improves on his 1st half performance.

Steiny needs to drop more to receive the ball, otherwise he won't get a sniff today.

All in all, not bad. I thought the game was even in the first 35', then we started crumbling in the last 10'.

Also, had Thompson not scored a cracker - all the pressure would be on them now...

Manny and Smith need to step up and boss the midfield, like they did last week.

I'd agree with that. We have looked not bad under the circumstances. The last 10, we have lost our shape. I'm intrigued to see Greenies coaching chops come through now. I just think Rowe looks about a yard off the play. In that situation, I would be saying to him 'just receive and pass son and sit a little deeper so you don't get exposed'. That message has to certainly go to Lia if anything because unfortunately, he is looking woefully underdone. It has been commented that he is lacking in match practice and it is showing. Thats not his fault for being thrown into it but I think in that case, with all the experience he has, he would know to take the safe options. He is sitting too high, like a right half drifting into the central midfield.

I guess if there are any Bertos/Lochhead knockers, they would well be silenced..

I'm not a big fan of Lia at all, but let's remember he has barely trained in pre-season, so he's busting his guts and when he comes up against someone like Behich he's always gonna struggle.

Also, Downey has trained even less than Lia (he hasn't even had the green light from the physio yet - apparently 1 week away), so let's hope he doesn't have to be play/

I think maybe - since we've got a team full of youngsters - they should have drafted anoter TW or ACFC player instead of Downey..

Another thing is Ifill. I thought he would stand out and last week when he came on, he showed his class. As the the outstanding player in our depleted side, he is playing like he is a rookie with no hustle. I commented last week he is not a 90min player anymore and perhaps he is best as the first sub off the bench....

Mind you, it is easy to throw stones when we have been dealt a crap hand by the FFA. For that reason, the guys do get a little bit of slack. Lia would not be playing and Ifill may not have started. Its unfortunate but thats what it is.
