New A-League teams

I still want a Christchurch team. Leo Bertos and David Mulligan are quality players, and not all quality Kiwi players can play at the Phoenix otherwise the Phoenix are in a spot of bother come international games. Best thing to do would be to have two Kiwi teams so both teams are affected by international matches, but nowhere near as much as if there was only one Kiwi team.

Made perfect sense to me LG. I'm of the same mindset, though I'm not holding my breath on it happening in the near future.

I agree with Pedersen, NZ simply lacks the depth... look at Aws right now, we have less pros now then in 1999/2000


In my opinion, discomart, they key word in your response is the word "now"

The number of fulltime pros in the AWs is an indicator of the health of NZ football as whole, (though not necessarily of domestic football).

But the focus of this thread is the future expansion of the A-League. Your AW pro numbers indicate the state of football in from 99/00 to now; that is it mirrors the situation in NZ prior to the Nix. In 10-20 years time, football could well be the dominant sport in Australia - with flow on effects to our game.

I suppose I just don't accept that we can say "never" particularly in the context of a sport that is experiencing a huge growth phase in Australasia.


it doesnt really matter what talent we have its wether australia would let us and they probably wouldnt id like to say a christchurch team but i just dont think its gonna happen

If we could put in a good bid and show we have financial support and a good coach then I think it could be a possibility.

agreed Prof, at the moment there's no show of that  - but when the Nix have had 4-5 good seasons, with growing crowds and the profile of football continues to be raised in NZ then another team from NZ could be brilliant for the game here, some will say that's all a bit of a leap of faith but hey if Terry hadn't of had a sense of optimism ...

(I'm hoping the All Chokes come to the party  -again- on this one and the "rugby (it's a small) world cup" proves to be a bit of a fizzer in 2011)

in regards to the post above.. i may get owned for this but surely the first place to look at starting another pro-football team in new zealand would be auckland? however there are two big ifs involved with auckland. 1. we'd need to get a good stadium, preferably eden park.. altho not terribly likely, albanys too isolated from auckland. and 2 we need a terry like figure to step up in aucks. but from there we have the talent, waitak and auckland are 2 of the best nzfc teams.

I wonder how good an A-league team made up of the 20 best NZFC players would be, probly get a roasting for this but I reckon they would struggle hard. Another thing to, I would love the nix to play Auckland City or Waitakere just for a end of season hit out, can't be off season for either team though.Rocky2007-11-22 20:05:41

If we take the Roar as a leading example of Qld colour choices, I think we can safely assume it will be something hideous, like a Brown and Lavender combo.

The A-league seems to have embraced the American style franchise name system, mass produced generic tripe, a marketers wet dream. Guess what the Gold Coast are going to be named, wait for it........ The Gold Coast Galaxy, well slap my ass and pour me a milkshake that is fricken genious! Almost as good as the... fu.ck I dunno, take your pick

10 years down the track when the Nix are going strong and football is much more prominent in NZ I think they will consider it for sure.

dude the a-league would never exactly give auckland a franchise, but honestly, between christchurch and auckland....

if auckland could get some decent financial backing and put up some serious infrastructure, they've got a model on which to look to now, then why the hell shouldnt the possibility be looked at if nz football progresses and the a-league expands. The a-league would have learned to make sure that teams have the proper behind the scenes work going on before they let another knights debacle happened again

I won't be too concerned if Auckland gets a franchise in future as long as Christchurch gets one first. We've proved that football is strong here. 10 100 to the All Whites vs Malaysia and 4 000+ in the pre-season match between the Phoenix and Queensland speaks for itself, and both with almost no advertising (and I know 4 000 isn't a heap, but Wellington only got about that many to pre-season cup games didn't they?).

A 2nd NZ team would be a waste of money. There really isn't any benefit for inclusion into the A-League as the point of winning the league leads to nothing? There is no ACL and i believe if the FFA has made it clear if a NZ team had won the A/L it would only receive %67 of the $$ price pool where as a Aus based A-League team would get %100 of the Winners check - it just doesn't seem viable at all.

To play in the Asian Champions League would really boost the teams profile and bring in more $$$.

I think the point of competing is to win, the $ and the chance to play in the Asian Champions League are very much secondary.  Would football fans care about the points you make if the Phoenix won the A-league - I think not.

I'd love to see the Nix in the Asian Champions League, but until then, I'm happy with what we've got and i'm hoping to see Team Welly in the Oceania Champions League.

Winning the league is an end in itself. You think that the Phoenix sat and considered what the A-League leads to before deciding to enter? Do you think the Australian teams did that?
 
Do Cardiff/Wrexham/Swansea have ECL rights if they win the Prem? I'm not sure that they do, but that doesn't stop them competing in England.

ACL? (Asian Champions League perhaps?) Do you have any citation for the 67% versus 100% statement? Assuming it is correct, why is that?  I presume what you're saying is that the A-League winner goes in to the Asian Champions League but only if it is not the Nix and that is why it's 67%?

Townsville and Canberra.

Already enough NSW teams, Melbourne/Victoria wont get a team for a while, NZL-WA-NT-SA all wont be able to get behind another team.

Notice that I didn't say Chch would get it either...The A-league won't even think of adding another NZ team until all the current teams are financially viable (many of them are not), when the new franchises which are close to ready to go are established in the league, and when they're 110% convinced that NZ could produce two competetive, well-organised, structured and financially viable teams. So a long wait ahead, assuming it ever happens in the first place.

everything changes over time and NZers aren't the same as Sydneyites (who really are poor at supporting football given their population)

That far north? That would be a great idea Thats why many NFL teams in hot climates wear their whites at home to force the other team to wear dark colours and heat up. If not, well the logo was red black and silver, wearing black at home would not be wise in Townsville so I'd imagine red or silver as their main colour.

Silver would clash with Victory away. Red would probably be too similar to Adeliade Utd unless done in combination with silver quite creatively.

As mentioned, green is completely free in the A-League, so it seems like a prime candidate. If the Roar didn't put so much Maroon (and used more orange) on their uniform they could've used that.

I reckon Roar should completely scrap orange. It's a bad combination, and what is Brisbanes sporting colour? Maroon.

Canberra would be good for Green, a la Raiders.

Red will probably be it, I doubt they'd use any colour other than the three in their logo.

midfielder, the Phoenix, has a lot more connection to our club's history than the connection between most club names and their history

However, the observation is true. Sports in this part of the world do seem to like the US franchise name system. I guess it's merely a form of making nicknames (which we have in England) more official - but I did chuckle when I first came down under and heard All Blacks, Black Caps, Tall Caps, Silver Ferns, All Whites, Black Sticks (... did I miss any) from NZ; Ollyroos, Matildas, Joeys etc from Australia. Of course, the reason why there are official names is that you can then copyright their use. I am sad to see that Arsenal are trying to do the same thing now in England. They have copyrighted the use of the name The Gooners and are enforcing it. The stupid thing there is that the name was invented on the terraces and has been used informally like that for decades.... the only thing sadder than that was when Victoria Beckham tried to take sole rights on the use of Posh and tried to take action against Peterborough fan clubs (though I never knew if that was actually true or just a tabloid wind-up.)

I get the feeling some "purist" football fans hailing from Europe might get the opinion that we don't take our football as seriously just cause we don't use the standard names (Athletic, United, Wanderers, etc) and consider our team names in a way novelty names. Although thats how we've named everything over here with Rugby, netball et all. I think they associate it with the fact that Americans do it too and the British way with teams and franchises and that sort of stuff is alot different to Americas way. Just remember up the up roar with Wimbledon turning into MK Dons!
