Canterbury Bulldogs! Have a sister club relationship with the NRL team!!! Get Hazem El Mazri on loan and he can take your set pieces! Grab a winger or two for attackers and a couple of the Bulldogs forwards for defenders and you'll do great! They'll adjust to the physical nature of the A-League easily!!!

Regarding the 500k people near C'Church, no, you're right, its probably more like 420k, so halfway between Newcastle and Central Coast then. Both these teams are getting 12k+ averages.

Anyway, the point is it would be a team that could get the community behind it like the Mariners and Jets have (and Sydney hasn't and Auckland didnt). That's if they were run well that is...

You are all right about the money, of course. Its a problem for every potential bid. If the Phoenix do good, it would hopefully come though.

Regarding a stadium, I was thinking AMI stadium I admit. They'd be keen to get a tenant in the rugby off season so should give a pretty good rate. QE2 is another good option though, and play derbies, finals and blockbusters at AMI.

As for the competition.

Gold Coast and Townsville will be hopefully in next season.

Geelong and Darwin are too small. (and Darwin will get 2 home games/ season from the Northern Thunder anyway)

2nd Melb team/West Sydney- the FFA may well decide to stick to 1 team/city model.

So these three would be the main competitors (in my order of preference).

Canberra (320k)- already has league and union teams for its smallish population

Tasmania (400k split between Hobart and Launceston)- population too spread out

Illawarra/Wollongong (400k)- Is 3 teams for NSW enough already?

So Christchurch's compares quite favorably to these three.

We already have a East Sydney team

Illawarra/Wollongong will also include south western sydney adds about 600, 000 plus is where AFL plan to go. (not Wollongong but south western sydney) this means like the gold coast the A-League wants a wollongong teamprior to afl moving in.

Geelong is too small

Its hard to find a seat in the 27,000 capacity stadium during the afl, so there are plenty of sport fans down there. geelong will do well if given the chance.

and the ffa will bring in a west sydney team, no doubt about it.

melbourne is already ready to hold another team in the city. our crowds prove this, and the profitablity of the victory proves it. after the new stadium is built and the 'one team one city' contract expires, then there will be plenty of businessmen wanting to back a new franchise.

like i said, chch or auckland wont stand a chance for at least a decade.

So hows the A-League expansion going to pan out?

Gold Coast and Townsville probably this season or next2008/09

Once the Melbourne and Sydney 5 year expansion moratorium expires we will get a west Sydney team based on Penrith/Paramatta and something else around Melbourne. 2010

So that makes 12 teams....if they want to go to 14 then take your pick from Woollongong/Canberra/Tassy/Darwin/Christchurch/Akld.

Now the big question. If you expand to 14 teams, thats 6 moreteams than we have now. Are there enough quality players to provide the 150 you would need?

However, it looks like a good proposal and there are a few hurdles.

I think to get a 2nd NZ team in, the Phoenix will have to get better results on the park. The next expansion will definitely be for Australian teams. Remember, the FFA is about developing Australian football, not NZ's.

A South Island location for the next NZ-based franchise makes sense, but Napier also springs to mind as a football stronghold. When we start talking about a 3rd franchise, it'll be time to leave the A-League and start building a professional league (6-8 teams) here.

NZ doesn't have a big enough pool of talent to supply players for a pro league even with only 6-8 teams in that league.

NZ is lucky it has a team at all.

But in all seriousness, Auckland proved they are an embarassment so I think Welly should be the sole NZ team for at least a decade.

Napier. . . it will never be . . . there are no direct international flights from Australia to there and the cost adds up to all clubs.

The direct international (Qantas sponsor) flights -all year round- goes to only Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. Seasonal flights (I think) to Queenstown and Rotorua. But that is all the Qantas flights possible to NZ.

To have a serious professional league here, then the indication will be by the feasibility and the number of the NZ bids for the A-League franchise.

With the news that the FFA has excluded the Phoenix from the A-League youth comp its obvious that the Aussies have little further interest in developing the game in NZ. Which is understandable,I guess as they owe us nothing.

The Phoenix got in because it widens the TV sales rights and merchandising and corporate sponsorship to the NZ market. However another NZ franchise would probably be the last on the list for A-League entry. There are too many Aussie cities that would kick up a huge fuss if another NZ team got in before them. That unfortunately is the reality.

Hopefully we will if the Phoenix get the results and Yellow Fever keeps spreading. The carrot of (age-group)WC qualification may retain young players who may have switched to egg-chasing in the past.

To create an auckland team maybe you base the team around Western Springs Stadium, its like Hindmarsh Stadium a bit....

I realise that the Geelong AFL team gets good crowds. However, that's hardly a useful statistic. Geelong's population is only about 160k. That's too small compared to the other options. The Geelong AFL team's non-bandwagon support (I used 2006) is poor for an AFL team, especially one in a AFL mad state. A Geelong team in the A-League would struggling to consistantly average even 10k based on Cats crowds.

right back at you. I'll say it again. GEELONG IS TOO SMALL.

As for Melbourne being ready to hold another team already- I'd say no again. Look at what happened when Sydney FC was down there. Shocking scenes. I'd hate to imaging the Victory playing another Melbourne team... The Victory is going well as the only team in Melbourne, so no need to stuff them up.

But yes, I agree that there is still a good chance new Sydney and Melbourne teams will come it. I'll finish by agreeing with you though. Yes, there won't be a new NZ team for at least a decade. At least we agree on something!

Far too early. We are yet to confirm ourselves as an A-League team. We played well and all but we still got the wooden spoon.

Plus, football means money nowadays. Don't think that any team can have a Mr. Ricky Herbert as a coach, a Mr. Terry S. as owner and a Mr. Tony Pignata.......plus a great sponsor such as Sony.

What I mean is that so far the Nix (and everyone behind them - supporters and management) ought to do an extraordinary job, something that nobody has done before in NZ.

This will take time, money, hard work and sweat on the pitch.
If, as I really hope, in 5 or 6 years the Nix will have achieved something (both on and off the pitch, i.e. establishing a good market, having an average crowd of 15.000 + et cetera), then, maybe someone will be as mad as Terry to put so much money and effort into creating a new team.
