Quite amazed that free kick was allowed to bounce in.. Meh? Take what you can get. Heart really should of had that.

ok so I was at the game and Ive managed to create a list of hopefully useful info 1st how the players went

Warner: Hails abuse on everyone (also a good communicator), not one of his kicks made half way, not much he could have done about either goal, not the worst debut

Siggy: not a right back, but worked hard, tackled hard, caught out of position a few times, good communication with Dura

Bran: very impressive display for a young guy, not the best passer, and his passing lead to the 2nd goal, and put Dura under pressure for the 1st. I would imagine he has done more than enough for a contract. Could have scored from bertos goal but let it drift pass him into the net.

Dura: Captain consistent, good positioning, poor pass lead to 1st goal, great leadership, pulled rank and calmed down an aggravated brown. Solid performance. . Could have scored from bertos goal but let it drift pass him into the net.

Locky: not as good as he once was, no over lapping runs, poor ball deliver, tackled hard, got caught up field early in the game, got better as game went on, subbed for Little Nic

Mooscat: typical busy work day for manny, wasnï¿½t seen much in forward movements but helped defend when needed, subbed for Sanchez

Lia: shining light of the mid field, calm, passed well and followed passes with useful runs, worked much better with manny and Sanchez than with brown, still was caught up field when the heart broke out.

Brown: tried hard, but didnï¿½t play smart, passed poorly, tackled poorly, realistically could of had a early shower a few times, got hot headed over nothing tackles a few times, put other nix midfielders under pressure from his mistakes, but still at the end he was still trying his balls off to help, it just wasnï¿½t working for him.

Pantellis: like the look of him, fast, nippy, great runs, worked well with Sanchez, Daniel and Ifill, controlled bal well on slippery surface, too many no look passes tho, every single one went to defenders when an attack was on.

Ifill: worked hard, again but didnï¿½t play to smart, tried to do a lot rather than use people around him, still the creative player in the team when Sanchez and Daniel arenï¿½t on, him and pantellis forming a nice understanding

Pav: fast, strong, no ball control, gave away lots of fouls, if he could sort his feet out he could be very useful for the up coming season

Subs:

Sanchez: cool calm collected, passed and moved well, the quality of his passing was highest on the field, moved into space nicely, and finished a nice move from Daniel for the goal. Promising for the season ahead

Lil Nic: fast, wanted to get involved made the runs that locky didnï¿½t in the 1st half, wasnï¿½t put under pressure, good communication with other defenders, should have started a right back

Greeny: more of the same from greeny, made nice runs, pressured heart defences, however never could find space for a goal scoring opportunity.

Leo: a little bit like browny, ran hard, but not smart, and gave one nice freekick which went in, but could have been scored by Dura or bran, sh*tloads of effort for the time he was on the paddock

Daniel: worked well with Sanchez and greeny and lil nic, crossed well, but still didnï¿½t get them to connect with a nix player, calmly set up Sanchez goal.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

on the game as a whole:

Pitch was slippery and didnï¿½t help our players who werenï¿½t the best passers. Ref was fairish... gave away the token mistry free kicks to both teams, however, one heart player was lucky to stay on the field in the 1st half after he sissor kicked manny(i think) from behind, cant see how he was shown a red for it.

Our corners werenï¿½t not well done, almost all of them went sort, and all that went short resulted in a break away from the heart, the 1 that we did get in there went straight to the defender on the front post with no1 there to compete with him.

the no look flick pass: WTF!!! i counted over 15 in the 1st half and not one worked!!!! instantly killed every attack we had.

Back 4: worked well together and stopped any heart created attack, however the 2 goals came from the back passing amongst themselves while the mid field took off and joined pav next to the heart goalie. they contunally put themselves under pressure which most of the time they longed balled themselves out of trouble, but twice, they werenï¿½t so successful.

the heart forwards showed how slow our defence is (except for lil nic). if there is any communication break down in the back4 we could be in serious trouble.

Pantellis, Sanchez, Daniel,Dura and Lia: really head and shoulders above the others gave great performances and i would like to see each of them start a few games together and we could see great things.

Some good imfo there.It is early days, but I have to say from your comments(we are not the top 4 yet) that we have a long way to go. Looks like the midfield might struggle. Anyway time will tell

cheers for these assessments- some great insight into the side.
We are definitely still a striker away from a truly dangerous side, but Ifill and pantelis creating an understanding is great to hear. Sounds like he had a blinder which bodes well for us.

The defense sounds like its still shaky, which isnt promising- however Bran would be a welcome inclusion.

Also great Sanchez's passing looks up to it, seeing as thats why we have him.

And above all else, these ratings back up my fight for Lia over Brown. Think Vinny is gonna have quite a big role this season if he keeps up the improvement.

Well, it's not as if it's the most difficult thing in the world to get on the phone to Ricki, pack your bags and come here and train/trial with the Phoenix for a few weeks. I mean if Sanchez can fly half-way around the world to do it, what's stopping Clapham? Perhaps the fact that he's been here and done that before, and he feels he isn't up to the required standard?

I didn't realise players invited themselves to pro clubs for trials. That's an interesting concept.

To be fair, it is a bit of a problem for a lot of guys playing here and having higher aspirations - you need a decent agent to sell you to clubs, and not many guys here do.

Still not an excuse - you ain't gonna make it just sitting on your arse waiting for the phone to ring. Being proactive is very important in any professional environment, and with Clapham specifically, he does have a relationship with Ricki, and it's not as if he'd tell Clapham to get lost if the latter rang him up and asked to train with the guys for a few weeks and perhaps try to impress enough for a contract offer. Sanchez decided to stay here on his own to prove himself, and this seems to have resonated with Ricki - so if Clapham (or anyone else in a similar position here) actually did something proactive, maybe they'd reap some reward.el grapadura2011-08-28 23:00:23

I should also add I don't particularly rate Clapham as a player based on what I've seen him at various levels over the past 2-3 years.

I used to think Clapham would be a good squad player until I watched him and Mulligan more closely and think Mulligan had more to offer and we cut him loose, hence Ricki has not shown interest in Clapham for A League for some time.

The crack up part to this is Ricki thinks the both above are good enough for Internationals yet not for A League......

Why is it a crack-up?

He's not limited to NZ only players when putting together an A-league squad.

Ummm you can't pick the same players for A-leauge as you can for the AWs.

The issue should be that out of our top 20-25 NZ players, some of them aren't up to A-league quality.
