I agree that ifill shouldnt be covering that amount of ground.
Also wont surprise me if we go back to a 4132 ish formation.
I think that would be a really, incredibly bad move from Herbert. We've played our best football not just this year but over the last 3/4 seasons with a 3 man midfield. We have periodically tried a 2 man midfield with various combinations (Brown/Lia, Brown/Manny, Lia/Manny, Manny/Smith) and it's never worked. Not only that but it's also led to us playing awful lump it forward football.
I actually think the problem with it is our forwards aren't the kind to drop deep, receive the ball and spread the ball wide or carry on the play (for example how Rooney does for United).
We've got to stick with what works for us (and also get away from the idea that 2 forwards in 4-4-2 = more attacking formation, this is completely out of date thinking).
Not sure what Fenton has done to be undroppable. Not bagging him at all, I think he's done really well and shown bags of promise but no goals and no assist since week 1 isn't enough to keep Ifill out of the side.
I think he needs to play with less pressure on him as well, bring him off the bench when there is less expectation, more a hope that he can contribute like with Boyd. Plus that will help with his development, it's good for him to know what the requirement is, maybe go away and work knowing what he needs to really dominate at A-League level.
