I wasn't sure what thread to post it under, but it kind of relates to the extension:

On Radio NZ this afternoon, Jesse Mulligan covered the licence extension and talked to RNZ sports reporter.

I wrote my usual "sour rant" email afterwards, and he copied his reply to their sports desk:

Thank you Robert, food for thought. And very pleased to hear from you.

dear Jesse,

Further to the excellent news of licence extension for the mighty Nix.

Thanks for mentioning it, and for your interview with the RNZ sports reporter.

During your chat a question was asked "what could we do to have better fan numbers, attendance, etc".

I would like to suggest that it could start with RNZ giving better coverage to Wellington Phoenix in its sports news. There is a surprising absence of coverage, despite RNZ giving prominent space to results and interviews from the EPL in its sports bulletins.

Surely we can have RNZ give as much cover to the Nix (or to the A-League in general) as they do to the New Zealand Breakers, which despite being past winners of the league have much lower attendance in New Zealand than the Nix, as per stats available.

RNZ seems to have a blind spot for the Phoenix, perhaps because it does not really consider it a local team? All Whites are of course covered, but they play very rarely and usually against minnows. The Nix play weekly, including at home every fortnight. Yet if we get any coverage at all on RNZ it is usually the result of a game played the night before. We never get any coverage of even important games for the Nix prior to the game.

How come RNZ has not made big news of Phoenix winning away, on the road, last week against the league leaders (Western Sydney Wanderers), 5:2, in great style, with Blake Powell scoring 4 goals, including a first half hat-trick?

Love your show, but also would like better coverage of our only professional football team by RNZ. Not everybody is interested in English football, or in the colonial cargo mentality that this is somehow the only league that matters. RNZ can do better.

Best regards,

Robert
