also think its an issue of players becoming available to receive the short pass, and then the ability to look up or turn and play another one.
so often we just run away from the ball or just look so static. Sure brockie is a striker, but in my opinion he needs to be moving a lot more even if it is just opening up small pockets of space by dragging defender outs of position
As I said earlier in this thread, we play a deep defence with our wide players hugging the touch lines, so there's never anyone nearby to receive a pass anyway. Doesn't matter what nominal formation we are setup with we are always wide and deep. Teams like Barcelona and Spain play a high line and their "wide" players constantly come inside to support the centre mids. Sure, touch and vision help (not everyone has a Xavi!) but even Barca's midfield would struggle to play a fluid passing game if they didn't come within 20m of each other.
As an example of what I mean, watch
this video of Argentina's insane passing goal from the 2006 WC, and look how close the players get to each other. The Phoenix always seem to take the approach of trying to spread the opposition out across the pitch to create space, rather than coming closer to the ball to provide easier options.
I don't think we are incapable of playing a short passing game with our squad but they would have to be set up very differently to what they are at the moment.
