Joel Porters signing sounds like one more of those " can't confirm, but won't deny" transfers. Porter coming to the Phoenix is more than a strong rumour now.

I reckon we will see him in a Phoenix shirt this season. Really exciting....he will be the last important piece in what is shaping up to be an excellent looking attack. After watching Porters "highlights clip " on You tube he looks to be the real deal. Scores a lot of goals in tight situations, good in the air, good pace and a natural lefty. He will complement Smeltzy brilliantly.

Can't wait until he signs and the season starts!!!!

I know a lot of people were hanging out for a glam marquee striker...but you have to be realistic. The club is only one year old. We finished last in the comp. You could blow a fortune on a "name" and not get much out of it.

Very well said. If we can sign Porter and a proper right back then there is only one situation in which i can think of a marquee signing being worth while. If Ross A. doesn't renew his contract due to injuries we could sign a marquee defensive midfielder, maybe even Ivan V. (and pay him outside the salary cap). This would then free up the space to release Old from his contract and bring in Ben Sigmund in his place.

...or based on recent form we could keep Old as a post man up front and sign Siggy as a marquee

exactly, hes still got the skills, doesnt have the legs.. thus he rocks as a distributor especially at a-league level, but not something we need..

No Cole no Phillips for the Phoenix. We did speak to Phillips management but thats where we left it.

Just back from seeing Kevin Phillips get a goal for West Brom at the Valley. He is absolute class.   He's one slippery customer. Still has great pace, read play and found more space than any player on the park and has an incredible touch. The Charlton guys I was with thought he was the best player on the pitch by a mile. Any way you can reconsider this Tony P?

he'd certainly be  a classy signing FH, but as has been said before he'll be asking way too much

he might well be back in the prem with WBA next season

Dude, do you really think that we could've done any more than we did to get him? We simply don't have the cash.

I think the squad is looking pretty good now, we could do worse ( and have) than Smeltz and Costa up front and Lia playing r.b. We probably will get a couple more olayers, just makes us even better. Nix for the playoffs this season

Looks like Terry, Tony and Ricki really mean business (to be applauded) - they are obviously taking a very aggressive approach to getting the squad to the standard required to be a real threat and contender i.e. not waiting for contracts to expire but using the prospect of little or no game time to encourage weaker links to think about their options.

Tony's quote from front page (YF) article;

"We will be releasing some more players," Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said. "If we can come to an agreement with the players, definitely. They need to weigh up whether they are going to play much next season [if they stay] or whether they should cut their losses and look for other opportunities. It's not nice but we need to build the squad and we need some space."

Whose future looks doubtful, I'm guessing;

Ross Aloisi (retire and hopefully pick up back offce role with Nix or commentating job)
Richard Johnson - is out of contact anyway

Jeremy Christie - 1 year to run on contract
Steven Old - 1 year to run on contract
Greg Draper - unless young enough to play in youth team

The added benefit of culling a couple of more players is it will make some room in the salary cap - how much will depend on what has to be paid to buy them out.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Hearfield is average but he is still young. Much like Lia I think he can improve loads.

Porter and Muly .. YES PLEASE.

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Do we really need Mulligan with Gao here? Mulligan seems like a free kick specialist to me - pretty suspect in defence. I'd rather have Dodd at RB.

wow this is good news. I'd rather have this Hearfield kid than the creaking Johnson. Seems like this is really target at Steven Old in particular and the mention of Sigmund is promising, as is the ongoing talk about Porter. Pignata brining him up again surely raises the odds above the 50% mark, perhaps a 70% chance of him coming now?

I'd keep Christie because of his utility value (he's also not too old) and the fact that he's a kiwi. Not too fussed about Draper, but I could also see Coveny and/or Ross going as well. Might leave us a tad short on leadership material but a young, hungry squad is more appealing to me for some reason.

we should get rid of ross and johson so we have a spot left to sign someone else during the season and sign hearfield porter and sigmund

I hope Johno or Ross can last another year. We need an old head imo and Johnson performed well last year when given the chance.

I'd keep Johnson for another year, great player to bring on when you need the ship steadying. Does the basics right and leads by example.

i think unfortunatly its time for ross to go but id keep johno for another year.

I'm just diving in here to say I'm not convinced about Hearfield.

Don't see what he adds that we don't already have.

Maybe this part of what Hearfield brings is what Ricki and co are interested in, although I dont know who these goals were against. Plus he has played with Durante, would know his game

2006                   Australia U-20        14 games (6 goals)
2007-present      Australia U-23           2 games (1 goal)

Unless ricki's wanting to train Hearfield as a right back (which could happen?) then there is no point in getting another midfielder for this season. Hearfield has added spark to newcastle play whenever he came on and could be potentially very good but i dont think he is what the nix require considering the current squad.

We need a natural right back, that is there specialist position- not a makeshift central defender.
I'd love to see Sigmund at the nix but realisitically we need a right back.

I think our midfield has probably the biggest depth in the league with the signings we've made and the players from last year - it's going to leave good players on the bench!

Mids:
Ferrante
Bertos
Gao
Daniel
Johnson
Brown
McKain
Lia
Aloisi
Christie

To add Hearfield to that would be kinda dumb.
