NSWPL > NZFC > Central league > Gold Coast local sides.

Gold Coast hammered a side by 12, but other results have been closer.

And the top Sydney clubs are far better than the likes of Miramar.

Its early days and the Nix havent put out anything like their starting line up yet. Plodder wont be starting at centre mid during the season.

Bertos with the corner. Possibly McKain with the shot (header)
Yep was McKain, the triallist on the left wing first half Villasonz or whatever and the guy up front with Costa in the second were easily the stand-out trialists. Mulligan and Costa were our best players IMO

Slow down speed racer!  Nearly fell off my seat when you mentioned Mulligan being one of our best.

I don't know what you guys are talking about... From what i'm hearing the game sounded great!
Mulligan seems to be pushing for starting and we may have found a good left midfielder and maybe a good striker. Anyone know who he is? Costa sounds that he is improving on his efforts from last season, its a bit tough to gauge though because it isn't an a league team..

Still awesome! The pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together.

Bit worrying about Krishna and Corrales...

that 12 yrd old up front in the second half was pants. Bertos was the best there, followed by Eager .

Thought we controlled the game pretty well, particularly in the 2nd half when we had the fresh players, but our lack of anyone to finish was a bit of a worry. I thought Costa, Leo & Hearfield looked pretty sharp, but was pretty disappointed with the triallists in the 1st half. They didn't even seem that enthusiastic in chasing things round imo.
Interesting to see McKain in CM and Muscat in the midfield.

I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that we're lacking 3-4 quality players in our squad. We've also kept too many average players - Ferrante, Christie etc. who while hard workers never really achieve anything with the ball. No suprise. valeo2009-05-26 23:06:37

Although I really like Ferrante I must agree with Valeo there.

Any idea on the games attendance?

It's the Phoenix vs an under strength 'mar in a social kick-around.  If it's anything like last week (or the last two seasons) it will be a couple of hundred.

The rest of the team wasn't much better even though it was a training game,so it's a bit harsh to single him out,his crossing into the box was poor I agree, but he put in a pretty good effort last night.

IMO

Krishna and Correles - did nothing maybe next year. They had their chance and have blown it for this year
Mulligan - did a lot of running but lets not confuse work rate with execution, also falls over to easy
Bertos - was stand out IMO
Barba - sorry but jury is out for me on him still. Scored a goal but from where i was it looked better than it was. Other than that he sqandered some bread and butter chances under no pressure
Back four - Lockhead, Durante, McKain and Manny seemed solid and comfortable for the most part albeit a little rusty and Mckain needs to use less long balls and when long balls are called for he need to up the completion rate
Paston - done he job when called upon. Had little to do
Ferrente - who
Lia - someone said Lia played but i can't remember seeing him, maybe sums up his contribution
Daniel - again his execution needs to be polished but work rate was good. Hopefully niggly injury from last year is behind him
Hearfield - OK, no more than you would expect
Brown - see Hearfield
Christie - Plodded about not really doing much
Other trailists -
Baldy right back 2nd half - No chance
Guy that played left mid who deliberatly handballed in first half in front of stand - say no more
Andy Barron - basic and reliable, but we have those already
Small fella up front - full of enthusiasm but lacks the skill or experience at mo

2nd half definately an improvement, as 1st was last week all over again. Having said that, some of the shots from reasonably decent positions in the latter half were laughable at times.

Krishna and Corrales get an A for effort, but they're don't appear to have the goods to be up front for us at the mo.

If they both grew a foot or two between now and next year it wouldn't hurt either...

And that's before you realise it's a Miramar side that started without Dom Rowe, Craig Alderdice, and some others that I'm forgetting.

Was a mix and match of Miramar's first and reserve teams.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think we are getting a bit to pesimistic over this, from what I saw they were playing at half pace most of the time, when they did pick up the pace things looked better.

Its only a training game with players getting rid of the cobwebs, working on combinations etc. and as someone mentioned it wasn't the full team. I think we will see them get better over the next few games and the pace they play at increase.

It's not all doom and gloom.

As an aside was Diego there last night as I saw some South American looking guy walking out of the changing rooms at the end or was it one of the prospects?

Oh, and thought Lockhead was starting to get back to some form on the left as well. Made some nice runs up the sideline in the 1st half.
We definitely need some more height in the middle. None of Costa, Corrales, Krishna or the other short triallist striker really threatened to win much in the air.

I mentioned purely because of all the players who did the full game he was the stand-out, saying that he was barely NZFC quality though.

You're absolutely right valeo - it's blindingly obvious.  And if we don't get those 3-4 quality players of A-League or better level (in addition to the signings of Diego and Greenacre), we'll be dwelling in the A-League basement this season.  It's a bad indication when our main targets at the moment are Corrales and Krishna - OK NZFC players but in my view would struggle to even make the bench in the A-League.  Hopefully the two players from Europe will be good enough for the A-League so that we can offer both of them contracts.

Some of you , especially those who weren't there, are making far far far too much of it!!

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I agree with you both - we are 3-4 quality players short of being competitve with the top tier of A-League clubs (Melbourne, Adelaide, ??). We aspire to win the A-League so our bench mark for recruitment therefore needs to be; would this player make the Melbourne or Adelaide starting 11 or squad ? Krishna and Corrales, and the 2 trialists on their way, need to be assessed against this standard.

I do however think we did make some necessary tough calls with respect to letting weaker players go in the off season and, with Diegos signing and a good 2nd striker, we will have a better squad this coming season than last season. In addition to recruiting the additional 3 or 4 quality players there are still some tough calls to be made (i.e. 3 or 4 still to be let go) however to get the squad to where it needs to be to be a top tier side.

But, subject to the 2nd striker signing, we have made reasonable progress.

We won't win the league but, if we can just sort out the 2nd striker, we can make the play-offs (top 6) and hopefully push for a top 4 finish - so we get a home play-off game.

First 4 games of the season will be so important - we need to get off to a flyer to get some momentum going and to rebuild interest and crowds.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I remember last year making the pre-season cup final, the Phoenix were in the best shape ever during  this period IMO. Then the season started, and they were crap... I would prefer if we done the opposite this year and cruised through the pre-season so we can rip up come the season's proper kick off.. so personally im not worried about last nights result
