Hmmm. Let's consider the 09/10 preliminary finals team: Iffy, Greeny and Leo at the height of their powers, McKain doing a good enough job in the back 4 to keep Siggy on the bench, World Cup hero Paston in goal... This team looks to have a better midfield in theory (considering that Vinnie Lia was our go-to guy back then), but otherwise it looks about even to me.

Pretty sure that Paston was broken and Reddy was in goal (and on fire).

Correct.

It will be interesting at the end of the season to put together and 'all time nix 11' and see how many of the current squad make the cut.

It took a while before his fitness was there from my memory. I'm not saying he wasn't class in the first few games. More that by the end of that season he had hit his stride. Something like 3 goals in the first 10 games then 10 in the next 20 (including finals). In the first 2 games he came off early.

Yeah I couldn't remember - he's always seemed epic.

Hehe. An argument over how good Ferrante is/was an talk about Diego being part of an effective front four

Yep, Ifill was good from the get-go. Greenie was a bit more hit or miss, but still did well.

Ifill's fitness was never up to scratch; didn't matter. He can play on one leg and still be good. I don't think I ever saw him play a whole game where he didn't at least hobble once.

I am STOKED about how our midfield is shaping up. I am confident that our defence can do the job too.

I just have a MASSIVE gaping worry about our ability to put goals in the back of the net. _IF_ that is either (a) addressed, or (b) turns out to be a false concern, then BOO-YAH. This season is going to rock.

I guess I should restate my point as it has veered off from what I meant. The point wasn't so much about the talent of Ifill but that it is too early to be saying that no one in this team has Ifill's talent given one hasnt even arrived and another is yet to make an A-League apperance. Valeos statement is most likely going to be proven correct, but there is no evidence that it is correct at this time

What are people's thoughts about injury cover for the back line?

Well defensively we have Durante, Sigmund, Muscat, Fenton, Boxall, and hopefully Doyle (even if hes not signed he can come in later as cover). I think there would be enough there.

Im hoping you are right. Trouble is apart from Doyle it is the same as the defence from last season and the season before...

agree looks good, gives us a bit of time to start looking for the eventual replacements of Durante and Siggy. Hope we sign Doyle.

lol I just wrote the "eventual replacements of Durante and Brockie" a Ben Sigmund Freudian slip if I ever saw one.

That is only true if you think the defence is made up solely of the 3 or 4 defenders, and the goal keeper.

Another way of looking at it is that the striker is the first line of defence - eg Brockie/Stein/Greenie etc. chasing/pressuring the opponent's keepers and backs... and Brisbane Roar's noted upfield pressing...

If you think of it that way then at a MINIMUM, Reira and Roly, and arguably the rest of the midfield need to be added...

...and then it is not quite the same defence as last year, is it?

Roly is apparently capable of filling in anywhere across the backline too. Which will be useful when there's an AWs game on and Smith and Reid are "injured" so Siggy, Dura and Boxall could all be out

Is their not some culpability from the players. Communication, positioning, support... We had maybe three players who werent as effective in pressing, screening.. Carlos, Stein and Brockie.. the rest worked very hard on defence, subjective whether the hard work was effective..

I still feel like we have a few too many deadweights in the squad - Caira, JBS and now probably Hicks considering the reinforcement we've made in the middle of the park.

Squad is a bit unbalanced.

I'm hoping Kenny C chips in with 10+ goals.

Are we talking about the potential star or have we moved to how well we will go this season?

I think it might only be Steve-O that would not be inspired with this team and its make up. Yes we have no strikers but I seriously doubt we will get rolled over like last year and I think there are more than enough guys to get goals here or there and not necessarily a Smeltz type that bags 15-16.

I am not sure if there would be a better midfield in the comp to be honest (and I say that with a bit of ignorance on how other teams shape up)

I think the real question is whether or not this squad costs too much, or whether we could have got better value in Poland.

Bwtcf.. I was on the soap box.. As much as im excited with the upcoming season our star wont be from the backline..

Kenny might have a great second season, Tyler might score goals from his endeavours..

McGlinchey will be our MVP. Doyle will be our young player of the year (if not Gorrin). We'll finish third, leak lots less goals and Brockie will be our golden boot.

Little dose of (rare) off season optimism for everyone.

Ps MMcG and TD will start game one.

Could  this season see the surprise return of Lucky Headbandage?

Hasn't been seen since ages ago,but (not by coincidence) rose to prominence when paired with Tim Brown..

Tim wasn't afraid of challenging for the ball but often came out a little worse for wear.

Lucky offered sorely needed protection, defensive cover that helped Tim take the knocks and keep his head together as an attacking mid.For a time the two were inseparable, Though occasionally deployed with Muscat or Lochead to defensively stem the flow, the pairing of Lucky Headbandage with Tim Brown in the Nix midfield virtually guaranteed the win, and was the most effective pairing by far..

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!
