Stand Up (and get it right)

In my mind singing this without any tune at all (let alone the right tune) is no more annoying than say:

Singing "you're sh*t and you know you are" 10 minutes into the first half with the score at 0-0

Singing "You'll never beat the Phoenix" again 10 minutes in with the score at 0-0

Chanting "who are ya" at every available opportunity, player, photographer, security guard it doesn't matter.

Chanting "you don't know what you're doing" after nearly every whistle against the Phoenix.
[/quote]

I believe YF are the most fervent and interesting collective of fans of any team anywhere in the country, and are nothing short of a breath of fresh air for the docile rugby-sodden laymens whose idea of "excitement" is chanting "HUR-RI-CANES!" whenever it blares over the loudspeaker. But this precious "Ugggh, that's not how you chant/sing, ughhh you're ruining EVERYTHING!" attitude really, really spoils things.

Getting newbies excited about being at the game is an excellent segue into getting them interested in football at large -- and I'm living proof. Chastising everybody for using "Who are ya?" too much, or getting the melody for "Stand up for the Phoenix" wrong just reeks of the kind of blind elitism that a fledging supporters group has absolutely no right to claim.

I think the sooner YF come up with a series of regular chants that aren't copied and pasted virtually verbatim from England, the better.

I look forward to the time that discussion on this forum is weighted more toward what happens on the pitch.

The largest threads by far are the match threads, but maybe the chants forum can become something of a "Aisle 21/22" discussion zone.

At what point did I say  "ruining everything"?  Read my post again pal, I think this bit:

"I could go on but I think you get my point, the thing is I raised this stuff in my first ever post and got slammed for it.  I know it's not everyone that does all of the above and I don't want to offend individuals but I've learnt not to let it get to me or I'd have ended up rocking too and fro in a corner somewhere muttering bad words and dribbling uncontrolably. "

is a live and let live attitude, it doesn't keep me up at night.....

"I think the sooner YF come up with a series of regular chants that aren't copied and pasted virtually verbatim from England, the better."

So why is it up to the YF?  Are you saying that everyone else has to be led, would you like it orchastrated?  Should we get a conductor?  How about you start some or come up with some?

All the original post was saying is that if you're going to copy something, you may as well do it properly.

If the Phoenix were as defensive as you we'd have conceded a lot less this season.

Yep, a lot of outside Nix supporters look as YF as being elitist/snobs which really isn't the image we should be trying to portray.

Cmon bit of perspective here

Of course people have different opinions. Some think we overdo the Who are ya (me), some think we could do with a bit more chant creativity (me), some dont really like that noise we make at goal kicks (me) but on the whole I think its just plain great people are getting into it and enjoying themselves. You will never stop people thinking differently but dont go labelling differences of opinion as something they are not.

And - this forum is open to anyone and any view. The YF zone is open to anyone and anyone is welcome to start any chant. Many do.

elitist is rather a stretch.

I realise that but many other people don't.

Back on topic.

I've never heard either of those songs as the way it sounds at the stadium, I have heard

for the phoenix
stand up

and

Stand up
for the phoenix

if you get the difference, it's hard to write out. So now i have no idea how it's meant to be chanted.

Plus I comment on here but don't go to the BB or sit in asile 21 so am I YF or not.

does it really have to be this difficult, aren't we all just having some fun?

Hell, we're all YF, aint we?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

No one, but no one, is too sexy for a Retro Ricki.  They are the cloth version of 6 hours with a naked Jessica Alba.

Does it really matter if someone chooses to be part of YF or not,at the end of the day the main point is that we are ALL Wellington Phoenix supporters/fans.To stand on the concourse before  a game and watch a very diverse crowd stream into the ground still gives me a big buzz. The sight of so many wearing some form of Phoenix/YF apparel is just unreal and long may it continue.

The words are - Stand Up, for the Phoenix.

Basically it goes wrong for us after the second line.  If you listen to the tune (Go West) the first two times are the same notes, the 3rd and 4th are different.  We end up using the notes from the first line 4 times instead of varying it for the final two times.

Look through your parents music collection for one of the myriad of acts that have recorded it (Village People, Pet Shop Boys, Right Said Fred - hmmm... there is a theme here). Baiter2007-12-10 16:02:33

Maybe we shouldn't have shaved the Mo's off, might have helped the Gay Band motif

Except
Stand up for the Phoenix!

This is a great upbeat song. Maybe it could be played before the game. Or it could be played for our highlights package of our goals scored this year.

Tony, please tell me you're joking. If you play Right Said Fred at a Phoenix game I will use my membership card to cut my own throat.

By the way, the playing of Phoenix City has become a bit slapdash recently. The day it was playing as we walked down the concourse was best. Since then it appears to have tailed off to where we're lucky if we get a few bars before kick-off.

Phoenix City = YES!
Right Said Fred = NO!

This thread is hilarious by the way...

ok I'll invite Right Said Fred to play at the Fever Awards. If they can't make it there might be a local covers band out there.

When Phoenix City first got played (and to a lesser extent Ring of Fire) I seriously thought we were the coolest team in the A-League.

But with Dario G, Pet Shop Boys and Right Said Fred apparently the YF choice of anthems I am starting to think we may be the campest.

This thread started out as some pretty straightforward instructions on how to get possibly the easiest chant in the world right but unfortunately has gotten way out of hand.
